The new PvE mode added to Escape from Tarkov in mid-2024 received a mixed reaction from players. It launched alongside the pricey “Unheard Edition” of the game, which sparked widespread criticism and frustration for several reasons.
The recent addition of a PvE mode to Escape from Tarkov has been well-received by many players. However, Battlestate Games has clarified that this mode wasn’t actually intended to be released at this time.
PvE Isn’t Supposed to Exist
Battlestate Games’ Nikita Buyanov, the company’s COO and studio head, recently shared an update on social media about their planned PvE mode, explaining that the release schedule has slipped.
Interestingly, we originally intended to add PvE mode after launch, but we worked around the clock to deliver it much sooner – about a year and a half ahead of schedule!
We’ve continued to plan updates for PvE content even after the game launched, and we’re still doing so. Originally, Escape from Tarkov wasn’t designed as a PvE experience, but we shifted direction to satisfy more players.
Nikita has pointed out that each time Tarkov resets (‘wipes’), about half of the player base tends to shift towards the game’s PvE mode. This is because PvE offers a more relaxed experience, reducing stress and eliminating the anxiety many players feel when facing off against others. It’s simply a more casual way to enjoy the game.
As Escape from Tarkov nears its 1.0 launch, Battlestate Games has been focusing a lot on the game’s player-versus-player and player-versus-environment aspects. However, according to Nikita Buyanov, the developers haven’t abandoned the player-versus-environment experience.
We still focus more about PvPvE experience, but PvE will be enhanced too in the future.
Players who primarily enjoy the PvE side of the game will have to start a new account – essentially a fresh start – to experience the full 1.0 release, including the branching storyline that finally lets players complete their escape from Tarkov. This means PvE players will begin with a clean slate, just like everyone else.
