Eternal Darkness Director’s Next Game Will Hit Early Access Soon

Denis Dyack, the director behind the beloved GameCube game Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, has released a trailer for his new RPG, Deadhaus Sonata, which will be available on Steam and other platforms. This marks Dyack’s first game since his previous studio, Silicon Knights, closed down. He and his team previously gained recognition for their work with Nintendo, creating critically acclaimed GameCube titles like Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes in the early 2000s.

After the partnership ended, Silicon Knights created the games Too Human and X-Men Destiny before going bankrupt in 2014. This bankruptcy followed a legal battle with Epic Games, which claimed Silicon Knights improperly used the Unreal Engine 3. Denis Dyack, the former head of Silicon Knights, worked at several different game companies and even tried to fund a new game similar to Eternal Darkness through crowdfunding, but the project never launched. In 2018, Dyack started a new company called Apocalypse Studios and announced Deadhaus Sonata as its first release.

Denis Dyack’s Deadhaus Sontana Brings Major Legacy of Kain Vibes

IGN reports that Deadhaus Sonata has a new gameplay trailer highlighting its connection to Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, an earlier game by the same creator. The trailer frequently compares scenes from the original Blood Omen with footage from Deadhaus Sonata, demonstrating how the gameplay has evolved from a top-down 2D style to the new title’s 3D action. Interestingly, the game will be built using Unreal Engine 5, despite the developer’s past difficulties. Players will be able to choose from seven distinct character classes: vampires, liches, revenants, wraiths, ghouls, wights, and banshees.

Deadhaus Sonata is a free-to-play action RPG where you team up with others to explore a dark and war-torn world called Malorum, inspired by ancient history. You’ll develop your character using a unique tarot card system, letting you create the build you want – whether you prefer playing as a powerful mage or a sturdy defender. The game is planned to launch on PC in Early Access in 2026, with console versions coming later.

Over his 30+ years in game development, Denis Dyack has experienced both successes and challenges, but he and his teams have created several fondly remembered games. His work on Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain is still highly regarded, recently receiving a re-release on PlayStation 5 in November 2024. It’s admirable how Dyack has continued to work through difficulties as a developer, and it’s great to see Deadhaus Sonata finally launching after being announced eight years ago.

When the game launches, players will experience a revamped version of Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain with plenty to do. Offering several character classes, a flexible tarot card system, and randomly generated levels, the game ensures each time you play feels unique and offers something new.
