As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I’ve seen the rise and fall of many iconic franchises. Halo, for one, has always been a beacon of hope, delivering stellar experiences that kept me coming back for more. However, it seems 343 Industries might have stumbled in their latest offering, Halo Infinite. Despite some promising additions like Forge Mode and Firefight: King of the Hill, the game’s lackluster updates and questionable monetization strategies have left many of us longing for more.

2021 saw Halo Infinite kick off with promising beginnings, but it hasn’t quite lived up to developer 343 Industries’ expectations in terms of capturing global attention. The game has struggled due to less-than-impressive content updates, extended periods between seasons, and some questionable monetization tactics, which have all contributed to a dwindling playerbase for this flagship Xbox title. On the bright side, Halo Infinite has made significant improvements lately, with additions like Forge Mode, Firefight: King of the Hill, and Big Team Battle that have enriched the game. However, despite these advancements, the multiplayer FPS has yet to approach its initial launch player numbers, leaving some to wonder how long it can continue as a live service.

As a dedicated Halo fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the arrival of the next mainline title in the series rather than diving back into Halo Infinite right now, despite 343 Industries’ promise to keep supporting it. It appears that a successor to Halo Infinite might be years away from release, possibly even skipping the current Xbox console generation. However, there are other Halo-like games on the horizon to keep us entertained while we wait for the next big installment in this iconic franchise. One such title is Splitgate 2, an upcoming multiplayer FPS developed by independent studio 1047 Games.

Splitgate 2 Could Be Exactly What Some Halo Fans Are Looking For

Splitgate 2 is a Direct Sequel to the 2019 ‘Halo with Portals’ Game Splitgate

Exploring the Next Chapter: Splitgate 2

Although Splitgate had an original idea when it first debuted, it didn’t garner much attention and struggled to break into the mainstream live service market. However, after launching its official beta in July 2021 and making its way onto modern consoles, Splitgate experienced a significant increase in popularity. The number of players on Steam skyrocketed, catching the developers at 1047 Games off guard. This unexpected growth happened just as Splitgate was set to receive major seasonal updates starting in August 2021.

Despite the significant popularity that Splitgate garnered, 1047 Games unveiled only two seasons for their multiplayer FPS game. This was due to the developer’s announcement in September 2022, where they declared they would cease all further development on Splitgate. Instead, they decided to redirect their efforts towards a new project promising “groundbreaking, not incremental” improvements to the ‘Halo’ gameplay experience with portals.

Splitgate 2 Will Shape Up The Formula Established By Its Predecessor in Major Ways

Jump ahead to July 2024, and 1047 Games revealed their new venture; predictably, it’s “Splitgate 2”. As only a short CGI trailer announced this sequel to the 2019 FPS, not much information has been disclosed about the game. However, 1047 Games has shared that “Splitgate 2” will significantly alter the formula of its predecessor, primarily by transitioning into a 4v4 competitive first-person shooter with a faction system. Although it’s moving in this direction, the game won’t transform into a full-fledged hero shooter.

The sequel to “Splitgate,” tentatively titled “Splitgate 2,” is planned for launch on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S around 2025. While details about it are scarce at the moment, this upcoming free-to-play shooter might be what fans of the “Halo Infinite” series have been longing for, serving as a potential alternative while they anticipate the next major installment in the iconic Xbox franchise.
