EVERSPACE 2 – Guide on How to Become a Good Pilot

Quick Guide for New Pilots

As a seasoned spacefarer with more scars on my hull than stars in my log, I can confidently say that mastering the art of weaponry and shield modifiers is the key to surviving the unforgiving void we call home.

Dont Fly Heavies

Seriously, dont fly heavy class ships. The primary goal of heavies is to outgun and out tank your opponents. The same strategy does not apply to the other 2 classes and youll have the feeling of “oh my god everything does so much damage to me how can you not fly the gunship or the bomber to out damage and out tank them”.

Dont Take Damage

Beyond protecting the front, your main objective should generally be to avoid taking hits. Although errors are inevitable and you’ll inevitably sustain damage at times, aim to evade and weave around attacks more frequently

Use Your Damned Devices And Ultimate

You can rely on them for assistance at any time; make full use of them. Rest assured, the previously mentioned ones won’t suffer any harm during periods when your device is inactive (on ‘cooldown’)

As a fan, I’d like to suggest a strategy for using your ultimate ability: Instead of waiting for the perfect moment when you’re overwhelmed by enemies to utilize it, go ahead and use it proactively. Retreat and fly backward to keep your enemies at bay to recharge it. Don’t forget to deactivate it after using it to conserve energy. This will help it recharge faster, allowing you to use it more frequently in the heat of battle

Stop Hurting Yourself

Keep a safe distance from explosives, mines, and anti-aircraft artillery to avoid collateral damage. Maintain a position where the target is always ahead of you, allowing you to aim effectively without risking self-inflicted harm since your weapons can’t fire in reverse

Gameplay Tips

Always tailor ship designs specifically for their unique features. Plan out their purpose, equipment, and statistics. For instance, expertise may not be significant on certain ships, but it could make a significant impact on others

Instead of returning to the path you’ve just traveled or maintaining a straight flight path to avoid detection, remember that enemies track your destination rather than your current position. Prioritize having variable speed (acceleration) over constant speed (velocity), although maintaining a high velocity is beneficial as well

If you’re still a learner, it’s usually beneficial to have one emergency tool ready for use after cooling down, which you can activate when you find yourself cornered or overrun, primarily as an escape route from that predicament

However, if you only have one panic device, don’t hesitate to use it if things seem to be getting out of hand.

Flak can be deployed near the danger zone, but it will primarily affect enemies. However, it won’t apply any effects to you if you’re out of cover or don’t wish for its effects on you. In this case, avoid using flak when you lack shields (since it could destroy your armor), and don’t use flak if you don’t want it impacting you directly (Choose “Destabilization + Bypass Shields + No Armor” to avoid being shredded)

A larger size doesn’t always equate to slower speed, but it generally means reduced agility or maneuverability. Therefore, you shouldn’t anticipate a bomber aircraft to perform sharp turns as quickly as a more nimble vessel like a vanguard

Take a moment to rest. Instead of frequently eliminating targets, consider utilizing a single extended attack and taking a break for rejuvenation. This way, you’ll avoid the need for multiple quick bursts

A weapon may automatically reload, so don’t hesitate to unleash one before it runs out, and then switch to a new one. This maintains the original meaning while sounding more conversational and easier to understand

Here’s a possible rephrasing of your statement in a natural and easy-to-understand way: Any weapon equipped with an area-of-effect (AoE) can strike you. This could be a flak cannon, a homing missile, rockets, mines, the bomber’s ARC-9K, or even cruise missiles. It’s best not to launch them in a dangerous position

Generally speaking, when you’re flying in reverse, a mine’s Area of Effect (AoE) won’t impact you, even if it explodes instantaneously

The “use” of a “flak and beam laser” tool is beneficial for investigating, given that it’s not often encountered. It serves as a mining or clearing tool, with the speed of the process being adjustable based on user preference

Make sure the items you create are appropriately leveled. A shield at level 1 won’t protect you at level 10, but don’t worry, even a basic shield can suffice at higher levels

Identify your own areas for improvement and make adjustments accordingly, as what might be a significant threat to others may not pose the same challenge for you. For instance, in the case of outlaw or bloodstar units, I find myself struggling more with snipers and prospectors due to their high damage capabilities and their ability to dodge attacks effectively

Some equipment may carry unique modifiers not found in other equipment. For instance, cargo units, boosters, or shields might possess handling, speed, or boost speed modifiers. In some cases, these modifiers can still be beneficial even if the device is outdated

You don’t have to lock onto a target to fire upon it, but it really helps.

If you have the necessary skill level, you can focus on a single target while launching projectiles at another. This is particularly helpful when directing projectiles at one target and applying heat to another (or when launching mines in a single direction and heating an opponent)

Try out different guns to discover your new preferred one; you might be surprised! In the unlikely event that it’s not your favorite, you’ll have other guns at hand; if it’s a boat, you’ll receive a full refund for your future purchase

You have a higher forward top speed than sideways.

Inertia control systems can be turned either on or off, allowing for drifting movement, but keep in mind that this action will slow down your speed, making it not advisable to keep them consistently switched off

Since kinetic and energy damage catalysts don’t require a weapon prefix, there’s no need to load your preferred firearm onto them. In other words, feel free to place those damaging effects on your chosen gun

In contrast to armor and shields, hull strength seems insignificant because it absorbs all enemy energy and kinetic attacks without much resistance, causing it to be destroyed swiftly

When examining your loadout, take note of the types of weapons being used: some enemies deploy energy-based damage, while others use kinetic damage. Pay special attention to identify which weapons are discharging energy-focused projectiles and which are discharging kinetic rounds. Concentrate on the effective ones in your arsenal

Avoid focusing narrowly; all adversaries are equally problematic. It’s beneficial if they’re less visible or farther away, as they often turn out to be more resilient

In a more casual manner, it’s important to understand that various types of weaponry possess unique advantages and disadvantages. This is most evident when comparing secondary weapons such as guided missiles against homing missiles or conventional explosives like mines

There’s no need to worry about using consumables. Throughout the game, you’ll have more than enough to use whenever needed, without ever running out. In fact, you could consistently sell them and still have some left over for the next encounter

Additional Tips

Even though the tutorial in the game provides information about damages and their types, it took me quite a while to fully grasp the concept. Perhaps this explanation will help others avoid the same confusion

The type of damage your weapons are dealing to the target is determined by the current defenses in this sequence: Kinetic Damage, Energy Damage, or a combination of both

  • If the target has an active shield (blue health), it will only take Energy Damage until the shield’s HP is depleted
  • If the target has armor (yellow health), it will only take Kinetic Damage until the armor’s HP is depleted
  • The target’s hull (red health) will take combined Kinetic and Energy Damage until their HP is depleted (this destroys the target)

A couple of related tips:

  • Energy focused weapons are excellent at shredding through both Shields and Hull, which is the basic HP composition of many enemies in the game. There’s no immediate need to swap to a Kinetic focused weapon once you break an enemy shield, as long as they don’t have armor.
  • Generally if a weapon has balanced damage, the Powerful or Rapid Catalysts will increase a weapon’s DPS more than a comparable tier Energy/Kinetic Dmg catalyst. Similarly Energy/Kinetic Dmg catalysts are higher DPS increases on weapons that favor one energy type.
  • Kinetic and Energy DPS shown on the a weapon’s stat card does not reflect any secondary effects or other synergies, so don’t treat those numbers as a final judgement. If something sounds good, try it! If something feels good in your build, keep it! If you keep dying, see what synergies you could be better exploiting to increase your damage.
