Every Borderlands Vault Hunter’s Status Ahead of BL4

Summary

  • Some Borderlands Vault Hunters won’t return in BL4, with deaths and short-lived appearances.
  • Popular past characters like Lilith and Zer0 are confirmed alive for Borderlands 4.
  • The series has accumulated 20 playable Vault Hunters across the main games, though it’s unclear which will return besides Zane.

After spending countless hours traversing the chaotic and unpredictable worlds of the Borderlands series, I can confidently say that I’ve become quite the seasoned Vault Hunter. From the original four to the newcomers in Borderlands 3, each character carries a unique story, personality, and skillset that makes them stand out.

It’s reasonable to say that the appeal and excitement surrounding the Borderlands series often revolves around its roster of Vault Hunters and the quality of loot. This trend likely won’t change with Borderlands 4, as it’s been noted already. Unfortunately, some fans have criticized the design of the new Vault Hunters in Borderlands 4 as being uninspired, which underscores the significance of these characters to the franchise. As we look forward to Borderlands 4, it might be interesting to revisit the characteristics and development of each playable character that has been featured in the previous four games.

In the Borderlands saga, not every Vault Hunter made it through the storyline’s trials. It’s highly improbable for those who didn’t survive to reappear in Borderlands 4, unless perhaps in flashbacks or as similar Non-Player Characters (NPCs). Given Borderlands’ quirky narrative and humor, it’s not out of the question that familiar characters might resurface in some form or another in Borderlands 4. In fact, several have already been hinted at in the latest trailer. To date, the series has introduced a total of 20 playable Vault Hunters, distributed as follows:

  • 4 in Borderlands
  • 6 in Borderlands 2
  • 6 in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
  • 4 in Borderlands 3

The Whereabouts of Every Playable Borderlands Vault Hunter Explained

Roland

Among the multiple characters you can control in the Borderlands games, Roland is one who met his end. In Borderlands 2, he was gunned down by Handsome Jack, a pivotal moment that sparked significant plot developments. However, it’s doubtful we’ll see him resurface in future installments.

Brick

In addition to other recurring characters, Brick appears in Borderlands 3, although his part is limited primarily to one story mission and a few side quests. Despite this smaller role, he continues to live in the game world and likely spends time with Mordecai and Tiny Tina.

Mordecai

In a similar vein to Brick, Mordecai reappeared in Borderlands 3 for a brief span. Following the unfortunate demise of his loyal companion, Bloodwing, during the happenings of Borderlands 2, Mordecai resurfaced in BL3 with a new pet of the same breed named Talon. It’s worth noting that both Mordecai and Talon are still alive.

Lilith

In the upcoming Borderlands 4, it’s been revealed that Lilith, who was previously believed to have perished during the events of Borderlands 3, is indeed alive. Her role in the game’s storyline is expected to be significant. As for her physical appearance, there’s some speculation about changes following the end of Borderlands 3, but we can certainly expect to see her character in the sequel.

The Whereabouts of Every Playable Borderlands 2 Vault Hunter Explained

Axton

In the aftermath of Borderlands 2, there isn’t much information about Axton that has been revealed. However, in the Arms Race DLC of Borderlands 3, he makes a return as a commentator for the game mode which resembles a reality show. As we approach Borderlands 4, it can be confirmed that Axton is still alive.

Salvador

In the same position, Axton is equivalent to Borderlands 2’s character, Salvador. Another principal character among the four Vault Hunters in the game, Salvador co-stars with Axton in Borderlands 3 as an ECHO commentator during the Arms Race DLC, and at present, he is still alive.

Zer0

In Borderlands 3, Zer0’s role isn’t minimal compared to other recurring characters. Instead, he plays a significant part, particularly in the Maliwan vs. Atlas conflict. Contrary to the boss fight’s resemblance to Zer0 in BL3, it’s important to note that he is alive and remains under the command of Atlas.

Maya

In the game “Borderlands 3,” it’s been said that Maya, a character, perished under circumstances some fans believe to be Ava’s responsibility. Ava, who is being trained as a Siren in “Borderlands 3,” seems to have inherited Maya’s abilities once the Calipso Twins were vanquished. Given that Maya has passed away, it’s unlikely we’ll see her in “Borderlands 4.

Gaige

In the Borderlands series games, both the initial Vault Hunter from earlier games, along with Krieg and Gaige, made a reappearance in Borderlands 3 during the Guns, Love, and Tentacles DLC. Similar to other returning Vault Hunters in Borderlands 3, she survives at the end of the DLC.

Krieg

In Borderlands 3, there was a downloadable content (DLC) specifically for the character Psycho Krieg, who grapples with the consequences of Maya’s demise. This DLC maintains a melancholic yet comedic tone throughout, and by its conclusion, Krieg continues to live on.

The Whereabouts of Every Playable Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel Vault Hunter Explained

Athena

Despite being involved in The Watcher’s war in the infamous prequel of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Athena does not appear again in the main series games. Given her role in spin-offs, it can be assumed that Athena holds a CEO position in New Tales From The Borderlands and is likely still alive.

Wilhelm

As someone who’s always eagerly waiting for the next chapter in the Borderlands saga, it’s clear that Wilhelm met his end in Borderlands 2. For those curious about his backstory, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel sheds light on how he rose through the ranks as a devoted follower of Handsome Jack within Hyperion. Given this, it’s safe to assume that Wilhelm won’t be making a comeback in the upcoming game.

Nisha

Similar to Wilhelm, Nisha is among the boss characters in Borderlands 2, and she can be defeated during an optional mission. Consequently, her role as a playable Vault Hunter in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel was intended to have a limited duration.

Claptrap

As a devoted fan of the Borderlands universe, I can’t help but be captivated by none other than Claptrap. To the delight of many fellow enthusiasts, this eccentric character stepped into the spotlight as a playable character in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. Much like how the iconic Psycho graced album covers, Claptrap has become the face of Borderlands, and it’s clear that he’s not just a figment of our imagination – he’s very much alive and kicking!

Timothy

In the game “Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel,” a character named Timothy was recognized as Jack’s Doppelganger. In the downloadable content (DLC) for “Borderlands 3” titled “Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jackpot,” Timothy reappears. In this DLC, he plays a helpful role and remains alive at the end.

Aurelia

In the game Borderlands 3, Aurelia Hammerlock – sister to Sir Hammerlock – perishes in a boss battle following her alliance with the Calispo Twins. Unfortunately, she is no longer alive before the occurrences of Borderlands 4, so it’s unlikely that she will reappear.

Zane

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement about the return of Zane in Borderlands 4! In the latest trailer, we see him alive and kicking, albeit with a few more years under his belt. However, it remains to be seen what part he will play in the upcoming storyline.

Amara

Information on Amara following the occurrences in Borderlands 3 is scant, making it hard to predict whether she’ll reappear in Borderlands 4. Nevertheless, it can be confirmed that she was still alive at the conclusion of BL3.

FL4K

Among the favorite characters in the series, FL4K is a robot beastmaster hailing from Borderlands 3. Similar to Amara, there’s uncertainty about where FL4K was during the events leading up to Borderlands 4, but it is assumed that they are still alive and kicking.

Moze

In summary, Moze, like Amara and FL4K, was a playable character in Borderlands 3, but her present situation remains unclear. It is assumed that she is still alive, yet this does not guarantee her return in the upcoming sequel.
