Every Character Who Destroyed A Horcrux In Harry Potter

Summary

  • Harry only destroyed one Horcrux personally, highlighting teamwork.
  • Various characters destroyed different Horcruxes, showing a united effort.
  • Neville Longbottom triumphantly destroyed Nagini, the last Horcrux.

As a long-time fan of the magical world J.K. Rowling has crafted, I must say that the journey through the Harry Potter series is like a rollercoaster ride filled with suspense, surprises, and emotional highs and lows. One aspect that truly stands out in this epic saga is the diverse array of characters who each play significant roles in the storyline.

In the final two books of the “Harry Potter” series, Lord Voldemort’s Horcruxes – objects containing pieces of his own soul – were a crucial element of the story. Harry’s mission was to locate and destroy these Horcruxes in order to ultimately vanquish Voldemort for good.

In my opinion, it was truly a team effort in the destruction of Voldemort’s Horcruxes, as I personally witnessed only one Horcrux being annihilated by Harry himself. Each Horcrux met its end at the hands of distinct individuals, mirroring the valiant efforts and selflessness displayed by numerous characters who dared to challenge the Dark Lord.

7. Harry Potter

Tom Riddle’s Diary

  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Tom Riddle’s Diary, one of the most intriguing Horcruxes, held significant importance long before either Harry or the readers were aware of their existence. In the second book, this diary served as a means to entice Ginny Weasley into unveiling the Chamber of Secrets, and had it not been for Harry’s intervention, it would have resulted in Ginny’s demise.

When Harry jabbed Tom Riddle’s Diary with a basilisk tooth, his intention was to keep the potent memory of Tom Riddle from resurfacing, thereby safeguarding himself and Ginny. Unbeknownst to him, it turned out that he had actually destroyed one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes.

6. Albus Dumbledore

Marvolo Gaunt’s Ring

  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Alongside Harry, Albus Dumbledore played an integral role in defeating the formidable Lord Voldemort, managing to locate almost all the Horcruxes himself and discovering a few of them. He even managed to destroy one Horcrux, but this heroic act ultimately claimed his life.

During the break between his fifth and sixth years at Hogwarts, Dumbledore discovered Marvolo Gaunt’s ring, which later proved to contain the powerful Resurrection Stone. In a desperate attempt to revive his deceased sister, he chose to wear the ring. Unfortunately, this rash decision triggered a curse that caused his hand to turn black and shrivel. Although Snape managed to postpone the curse’s effects, he informed Dumbledore that he had no more than a year left to live. Upon returning to Hogwarts with a Horcrux, Dumbledore employed the Sword of Gryffindor to destroy it.

5. Ron Weasley

Slytherin’s Locket

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

As a movie critic, I found myself utterly captivated by the elusive quest to obtain and destroy Salazar Slytherin’s Locket – the Horcrux that proved to be the most enigmatic of all. The crux of the problem lay in its destruction, as Harry, Ron, and Hermione were left clueless about the process. Once they deduced that the Sword of Gryffindor, empowered by Basilisk venom, held the key to its demise, it was a moot point – for the sword had vanished without a trace.

Originally intended for Harry and planted by Severus Snape, the sword was actually taken by Ron Weasley during a rescue attempt when Harry was drowning. With their friendship having been strained previously, this heartwarming reunion was sealed when Ron later destroyed Slytherin’s Locket.

4. Hermione Granger

Hufflepuff’s Cup

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

In the final book, Hermione Granger played a crucial part, orchestrating many aspects of the Horcrux hunt, which significantly contributed to the demise of the Dark Lord. Following Ron’s idea about employing basilisk fangs to shatter Hufflepuff’s cup and destroy a Horcrux, Hermione finally had the opportunity to participate in removing one herself.

As the Battle of Hogwarts drew nearer, destroying this Horcrux, which they had just retrieved from the Lestrange’s vault at Gringotts, would undoubtedly make Voldemort extremely uneasy, and he understood all too well how perilous his situation was.

3. Vincent Crabbe

Ravenclaw’s Diadem

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

In the books and movies, the method for destroying Ravenclaw’s Diadem as a Horcrux is consistent, but the character who carried out the deed differs. In the books, it was Vincent Crabbe who created the fire meant to kill Harry, Ron, and Hermione, but due to scheduling conflicts with the actor, this role was taken over by Gregory Goyle in the movies, who was one of Draco Malfoy’s associates.

Uncontrollable and hazardous fire known as Fiendfyre proved to be one of the rare elements that could obliterate a Horcrux. Interestingly, it’s ironic that dark magic, taught by Death Eater instructors appointed by Voldemort himself, was used to eliminate a piece of Voldemort’s immortal soul. Crabbe was the one who knew how to cast this spell.

2. Lord Voldemort

Harry Potter

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Harry Potter turned out to be the seventh Horcrux crafted by Voldemort, though unintentionally so. This fact eluded Voldemort himself, while only Albus Dumbledore was privy to the knowledge that for Voldemort’s downfall, Harry had to meet his end someday.

After discovering his grim end, Harry voluntarily ventured into the Prohibited Forest, prepared to confront death. Eager to eliminate his longtime adversary forever, Lord Voldemort didn’t realize that he was sealing his own destiny in the process. With the Horcrux within Harry being annihilated, only Nagini remained alive.

1. Neville Longbottom

Nagini

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Among numerous characters from the “Harry Potter” books, Neville Longbottom is one often perceived as having less screen presence in the movie adaptations. However, both in the novels and on-screen, his significant moment of victory and the conclusion of his character development unfolded when he used the Sword of Gryffindor to slay Nagini, the final Horcrux.

It was fitting that Neville struck the blow that left Voldemort weakened, allowing Harry to deliver the final blow, since in another circumstance, Neville might have been the one chosen by the Prophecy. The Prophecy discussed in “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” could have applied equally to Neville and Harry, but in the end, Voldemort selected Harry.
