As a long-time fan of the Merc with a Mouth, I’ve watched the evolution of the Deadpool franchise with great enthusiasm and fascination. Having grown up reading the comics, I was thrilled when the first Deadpool movie came out, and although it had its flaws, I appreciated the irreverent humor and fourth-wall breaking antics that made the character so beloved.

It felt like an extended wait for the arrival of Deadpool on the big screen, given that his popularity in comics surged around the turn of the millennium, during the peak of X-Men film adaptations and the burgeoning Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). He made appearances in video games and even had a peculiar role in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but it wasn’t until 2016 that he finally starred in his own movie.

As a long-time fan of the X-Men universe, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and sadness as I reflect on the upcoming conclusion of the Deadpool and Wolverine trilogy in 2024. It feels like just yesterday when I first watched the first movie and was blown away by the irreverent humor and over-the-top action.

2016 saw the successful demonstration of the Deadpool movie concept, a project that Ryan Reynolds had long been eager to execute in order to rectify the misrepresentation of his character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. By creating an authentic standalone Deadpool film, he achieved a remarkable portrayal of the character. The narrative commences with Wade Wilson as a hired gun until he gets abducted for grueling experiments, depicted vividly on screen.

1. In time, Wade manages to free himself, finding out that he possesses the ability to regenerate and even interact with the audience beyond the screen. Whether this trait is connected to his Mutant genetics remains uncertain, but it defines his character. Deadpool is known for his humor, excessive violence, and resilience; he keeps fighting even when on the brink of death. The movie leans more towards an action-packed thriller in the vein of John Wick rather than a traditional superhero film.

1. In this movie, there aren’t too many Marvel characters, but Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Colossus are prominent Mutants who team up with Deadpool. The dynamic among the three is enjoyable, and Deadpool has a unique relationship with Blind Al, a blind woman, as well as Weasel, his mercenary ally. Although the storyline of revenge isn’t particularly remarkable, the Deadpool film served as an effective proof-of-concept that was later surpassed by its sequels.

Instead, it functions as a kind of redemption arc for Marvel properties that were once overlooked by Disney.

As a gamer, I’d put it this way: In this game, I was thrilled to see appearances from Johnny Storm, Elektra, Gambit, Blade, and X-23, not just for a quick cameo but with meaningful roles. And let’s not forget Deadpool’s main companion, Wolverine! These heroes weren’t just there for a laugh or two like in some other games. There were indeed funny moments, such as Thor comforting a dying Deadpool and a mini Wolverine, but they didn’t overshadow the real deal. What truly shines in this game is the connection between Deadpool and Wolverine. It’s not just about the jokes or the action; it’s about their unique bond that makes the experience even more enjoyable.

From my perspective as a fan, the Wolverine Deadpool recruited didn’t pass muster in his timeline for me. He didn’t give a hoot about saving the universe and despised Deadpool with every fiber of his being. But as the story unfolded, Wolverine began to question his own apathy and failure. This character development not only resonated with me but also added depth to Deadpool’s persona. Despite the humor and gore, “Deadpool & Wolverine” was a heartfelt tale, with Hugh Jackman delivering poignant lines that touched me deeply.

Among the Deadpool franchise films, the second installment, Deadpool 2, stands out with the best Metacritic rating. However, it’s important to note that these review scores don’t hold significant weight when evaluating the Deadpool movies or the character as a whole. People either fully embrace or reject them. Deadpool 2 strikes an excellent balance between thrilling action sequences, hilarious comedy, and outrageous references.

In “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the bond between Deadpool and Wolverine is as strong as ever, but their dynamic feels familiar from this film. Cable is another character with a deep-seated dislike for Deadpool, intending to end his life. However, he eventually develops compassion and chooses not to harm Rusty or Deadpool. Rusty, portrayed by the main character, is just trying to find his place amidst the chaos, reminiscent of the early X-Men films. Cable journeys through time with the mission of eliminating Rusty, who eventually threatens the world’s existence.

In Deadpool 2, Deadpool puts his faith in Rusty, and with the aid of X-Force – who, as previously established, often meet untimely ends – he strives to rescue him. The lone survivor among them all is Domino, whose luck-based powers are unconventional yet effectively portrayed in the film. Deadpool 2 skillfully employs humor at its own expense, with Domino serving as a Bugs Bunny-like character to Deadpool’s Daffy Duck. The Looney Tunes cartoon series provides an apt comparison for the Deadpool movies. Overall, fans were delighted with this trilogy; each movie was enjoyable, but Deadpool 2 stood out slightly more among its counterparts.
