Every Devil May Cry Game, Ranked

Every Devil May Cry Game, Ranked

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must admit that my journey through the Devil May Cry series has been nothing short of extraordinary. Each installment has left an indelible mark on me, but some have stood out more than others.

Out of all the memorable games created by gaming legend Shinji Mikami, it’s Devil May Cry that stands out to me as his most groundbreaking creation.

Since 2001, Dante’s thrilling journeys have significantly shaped the hack-and-slash genre by offering captivating video games that master all aspects defining this style of gameplay.

From spectacular and satisfying combat to unforgettable soundtracks, what Devil May Cry represents is unique and historic, even despite its sporadic peaks and valleys.

Consequently, while eagerly anticipating the long-awaited release of the sixth part, let me express my enthusiasm for the series by sharing this list ranking each Devil May Cry game in order.

6. Devil May Cry 2

We Don’t Talk About This One

For quite some time, I believed that the criticism aimed at Devil May Cry 2 was overstated, but within just thirty minutes of gameplay, I realized that the criticisms were actually quite mild.

Over the past two decades of gaming, it’s been uncommon to find a title as flawed across all aspects. Apart from the appealing character movements of Dante and the climactic boss battle, there seems to be little in this game that warrants redemption.

The battles lack excitement, the adversaries are monotonous, the brainteasers are uninspiring, and the narrative and personalities are disappointing. Frankly, it’s astounding that the series persisted, let alone that it rose to be Capcom’s most successful franchise.

I tried my best not to fall into the same narrative as the vast majority of Devil May Cry fans, but it was impossible. This sequel must never be mentioned.

5. Devil May Cry 4

A Tale of Backtracking

It’s worth noting that among all the games in the Devil May Cry series, it’s just Devil May Cry 2 that falls short of expectations. The rest of the series, including Devil May Cry 4, generally delivers well and is often commended.

Regardless, Nero’s game offers an exceptional hack-and-slash experience, effectively revitalizing the narrative and maintaining the unique gameplay that distinguishes this series from others.

Instead, the title appears to have excessive repetition, a feature known as backtracking, that unnecessarily extends both the narrative and the gaming experience by making the player revisit similar stages multiple times, leading to a tedious and repetitive gameplay.

Adding Trish and Lady’s controversial portrayal results in a less-than-stellar experience with Devil May Cry 4, but it remains incredibly entertaining nonetheless.

4. DmC: Devil May Cry

The Most Underrated Reboot

In the lists I create, I tend to highlight titles that I believe haven’t received enough recognition, like the game DmC: Devil May Cry.

Apart from the controversial redesign of Dante that some find unjustified and the somewhat thin plot, there’s little compelling counterargument against the numerous positive aspects of this reboot.

This game boasts outstanding level designs within the series, an impressive soundtrack among the best, stellar combat mechanics, and a fresh take on the evolution of Dante’s character.

DmC: Devil May Cry stands out with its impressive platforming segments and imaginative boss designs. This action-packed hack-and-slash game is often overlooked as the least recognized in the series, but it truly shines among them.

3. Devil May Cry

A Classic Way Ahead of Its Time

Two decades following its debut, I finally got around to playing the original ‘Devil May Cry’. Yet, despite the delay, I was utterly astonished by how technologically sophisticated it still felt.

Today, the game still feels exceptional. The careful selection of camera angles, coupled with its rich gameplay and diverse levels, gives an impression of a daring creation that significantly shaped the genre’s trajectory.

Despite some common flaws common for that era, like recurring boss battles and notoriously long water stages, these aspects are relatively insignificant when considering the game as a whole.

Indeed, playing Devil May Cry feels like stepping into a timeless adventure. It’s truly gratifying to relish in the authenticity of this enduring classic.

2. Devil May Cry 5

The Ultimate Hack-and-Slash

In terms of pure hack-and-slash gameplay, it’s extremely difficult to find a title that matches the quality of Devil May Cry 5.

In terms of options, graphics, excitement, and fulfillment, the newest addition to this series stands alone, evoking emotions that no other game within its genre can elicit from you.

Although I might not appreciate its storyline or environment, I must admit that this game reaches the peak of its series in terms of gameplay, visuals, cutscenes, and even the narrative and its finale.

The way the game effortlessly immerses you in a ‘flow’ experience, thanks to its battles and soundtrack, merits examination. Regardless if you play as Nero, Dante, Vergil, or even V, the feelings it evokes are nothing short of extraordinary.

In my opinion, Devil May Cry 5 is the polished gem of the series that I find myself drawn to whenever I wish to revisit the games, primarily due to its finely tuned mechanics.

1. Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening

Timeless Masterpiece

Following the shock of the initial game and the letdown of the second one, trust me when I tell you that no experience could have fully prepared me for what Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening delivered to me.

This version takes a significant step up compared to previous ones, which is remarkable even by today’s standards. I find myself utterly captivated by the brilliance of this game’s perfection – its greatness brings me joy just pondering on it.

Although Devil May Cry 5 represents the pinnacle of what was established in Devil May Cry 3, it’s the latter that truly redefined everything. From start to finish, it radiates a level of style and personality that it’s hard to believe it was released in 2005.

As a gamer, I’m playing this game that seems to know its own awesomeness. It’s always brimming with pride over its epic boss battles, immersive levels, slick combos, and jaw-dropping cutscenes.

Devil May Cry 3 stands out in every aspect, marking a significant moment in gaming culture and undeniably being the greatest installment of the Devil May Cry series ever created.
