Not every closure of attractions in Disneyland or Disney World is premeditated; sometimes they unexpectedly shut down due to various reasons. Routine maintenance is crucial for the parks to run efficiently, and it’s important not to hold cast members responsible for these necessary disruptions.

Magic Kingdom (Walt Disney World)

Beginning January 6, 2025, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will temporarily shut down for an extensive renovation that is expected to last until 2026. This closure may be related to the development of the upcoming Villains-themed land in Magic Kingdom, which was officially announced by Walt Disney World Resort earlier this summer and has recently revealed more intriguing details about its creation. In a recent event held in Brazil, Disney unveiled the roster of villainous characters that will be showcased in this new area, providing a unique mix of iconic characters from timeless classics and contemporary films.

Epcot (Walt Disney World)

Test Track is currently closed for refurbishment and is expected to reopen in late summer 2025. Additionally, the Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caballeros will undergo a refurbishment from January 6 to March 15, 2025, before welcoming guests again in the spring. Meanwhile, the popular show ¡Celebración Encanto!, originally scheduled to close in September 2024, has been extended through winter 2025.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios

The famous “Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster” is planning a redesign centered around The Muppets; the specific date for this changeover remains undisclosed. Moreover, the “Muppets Courtyard” will be permanently closed and replaced by a new area themed after “Monsters, Inc.”, but the timeframe for this transition has yet to be disclosed.

Disney has confirmed that “The Little Mermaid: A Musical Journey” will now open in place of Voyage of the Little Mermaid as originally planned. However, the opening date has been adjusted from fall 2024 to summer 2025. Additionally, a brand-new Disney Villains stage show is set to premiere that same summer, moving into the space vacated by the now-permanently closed Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom (Walt Disney World)

As a cinephile and Disney enthusiast, I’m sharing some exciting news: My beloved dinosaur-themed attractions at Disney’s Animal Kingdom are about to undergo a transformation. Mark your calendars, because January 12, 2025, will be the last day to enjoy TriceraTop Spin, Fossil Fun Games, and Chester & Hester’s Dinosaur Treasures. From January 13 onwards, construction walls for the Tropical Americas-themed area will rise.

Disneyland Park

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad remains shut until December 12, 2024, as part of its continuous makeover process. Haunted Mansion Holiday will be shut from January 7, 2025, with intentions to reopen during winter 2025, possibly in early February. Furthermore, “It’s a Small World” is scheduled for refurbishment starting January 21, 2025, and is estimated to reopen in spring 2025.

That’s when we can expect a fresh start with the reopening of Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, and the return of two beloved events: the enchanting Paint the Night Parade and the breathtaking Wondrous Journey fireworks display. It’s going to be a truly memorable day!

Disney California Adventure (Disneyland)

Starting January 6, 2025, Grizzly River Run and Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind will both be temporarily closed for their seasonal maintenance and updates. Importantly, it has been confirmed that the Red Car Trolley at Disney California Adventure will also close permanently due to the expansion of Avengers Campus, which necessitates the demolition of the Red Car Trolley barn.

The Red Car Trolley attraction’s operations will cease on February 9, 2025, so that will be your last opportunity to enjoy it. Although Disney hasn’t made it official, it’s generally thought that the Red Car Trolley won’t reopen, not even after the construction of Avengers Campus and the new Pandora area is finished—a project estimated to take at least five years.
