Every EA Game Shutting Down in January 2025 So Far

As a long-time gamer with memories etched deep into my hard drive, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia every time I hear about another game shutting down. It seems like EA is on a never-ending rollercoaster ride of success and closure, with January 2025 looking particularly grim for a number of titles.

For quite some time, Electronic Arts (EA) has been a significant player in the gaming world, yet it’s also earned a notoriety for closures. This pattern of shutting down studios or games continues into the New Year, as several games are slated to be discontinued in January.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve found myself facing an unexpected reality – not once, but twice. First, it was a string of favorite games bidding farewell, and now, it seems like the New Year isn’t going to start as smoothly as we thought. Titles from Electronic Arts (EA), such as FIFA 22, NBA Live 18, and three distinct Battlefield editions, will be turning off their servers in November. To my surprise, EA didn’t stop at just those games; they announced that a further nine titles would be shutting down come January. This news has certainly given the gaming community a peculiar start to the year.

January 2025 Marks the End of an Era For These Titles

January 16 Kicks Off EA’s Impending Shut-Downs

The upcoming year (2025) marks the retirement of the first Electronic Arts (EA) game from their lineup, specifically Rory McIlroy PGA Tour. Launched in 2015, this game is a part of EA’s long-standing series of licensed sports games. As one of the few EA golf games compatible with modern consoles, its removal leaves golf enthusiasts disappointed. However, even after the servers are turned off on January 16, 2025, players will still be able to enjoy Rory McIlroy PGA Tour in offline mode.

The first game in the series since 1999, named Rory McIlroy PGA Tour, does not showcase Tiger Woods as its main golfer.

January 24 Puts an End to a Mobile Game’s 12-Year Legacy

One particular cancelation that has garnered vocal disappointment from its fans is The Simpsons: Tapped Out. Since the announcement of its impending shut-down, a die-hard fan known as Erik Rampenen has started a petition that has amassed an impressive 22,000 signatures at the time of this writing. The petition cites the game’s active player base as enough reason to deter EA from shutting down the game’s servers on January 24, but as of now, EA has yet to address the online petition.

On October 31st, the mobile game The Simpsons: Tapped Out was removed from digital store shelves, and all in-game transactions were halted.

January 29 Brings Seven EA Titles to the Grave

  • Blood & Glory: Immortals (on Apple and Google)
  • Contract Killer: Sniper
  • Deer Hunter Classic
  • Dino Hunter: Deadly Shores
  • Eternity Warriors 4
  • Frontline Commando 2
  • Frontline Commando: D-Day

On January 29th, a remarkable number of games (7 in total) were unfortunately closed down. These shut-downs share a common characteristic – most of them have been around for over a decade, which could explain why they’ve reached their end. This trend of closing down older games seems to be persistent within EA, as they experienced numerous shut-downs back in May this year. Even shocking titles like “The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth“, which was barely a year old at the time, were among those that ceased operation.

Additionally, these closures might not only involve mobile games, yet there’s a significant number of mobile games among those persistently being listed. Regardless of the reasons such as age or low player numbers, it seems regrettable but plausible that Electronic Arts will continue to shut down numerous titles from its library. At this point, we can’t predict which EA games will join the expanding list of games destined for closure. It looks like November was a challenging month for EA enthusiasts, and it appears January could prove even more difficult for some.
