Every EA Game Shutting Down Until 2025 Explained

Every EA Game Shutting Down Until 2025 Explained

As a seasoned gamer with memories stretching back over two decades, I can’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu as yet another wave of game shutdowns looms on the horizon, this time from the hands of Electronic Arts (EA). With the closure of some beloved titles like FIFA 22, NBA Live 18, Battlefield 3, 4, and Hardline, not to mention The Simpsons: Tapped Out, it’s hard not to feel a pang of nostalgia tinged with disappointment.

Currently, it isn’t ideal to be a fan of Electronic Arts (EA), as more shutdowns seem imminent. Notably, among the games EA is closing is a highly recognized mobile game that has been available for 12 years.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed that Electronic Arts (EA) isn’t exactly the most cherished name in our community due to its tendency to pull the plug on games and studios. From closing down numerous online games to annually refreshing multiple franchises, EA has faced quite a bit of backlash from fans due to their restructuring strategies. It’s not unusual in today’s era of layoffs and industry realignment, but EA has earned a particularly negative reputation by shutting down studios like Visceral, Pandemic, and Ridgeline Games – the latter being closed earlier this year by EA itself.

EA Games Facing The Reaper In 2024 And 2025

Electronic Arts (EA) maintains an extensive online list of video games they have discontinued, dating back to before 2013, with more recent additions included. Between November 2024 and January 2025, six EA games will no longer be available. The majority of these games are ones that have been superseded in series with frequent annual or near-annual releases. However, one game stands out as a unique exception – it has received over a decade of support.

FIFA 22 And NBA Live 18 (November 4 And November 7)

The first among these games to be taken offline will be FIFA 22. On November 4, the game’s online services will no longer be available, which is common practice for FIFA games due to their release cycle. NBA Live 18 will follow suit on November 7, mirroring the pattern of its series. Similarly, Battlefield games are replaced by newer entries, and EA’s sports catalog experiences a faster phase-out compared to Battlefield.

The Battlefield Games Facing Shutdown (November 7)

Three Battlefield games – Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4, and Battlefield: Hardline – from the seventh generation era will no longer support online play as of November 7. This change affects Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 devices, but offline features on these consoles will continue to work. Players who own later versions of Battlefield 4 and Hardline for newer console generations can still enjoy online gameplay, however, Battlefield 3 has yet to be ported to these systems. PC players, though, can still play the games online using their platform’s version of the game.

The Simpsons: Tapped Out (January 25, 2025)

For 2025, it’s only one game that’s been officially marked for removal from the market: “The Simpsons: Tapped Out”, a popular mobile city-building game that’s been running for 12 years. As of October 31, this game will no longer be available, and it will permanently close on January 25, 2025. No specifics about an offline release have been shared, and the reason behind its closure remains undisclosed. However, what we do know is that in-game purchases (microtransactions) are now disabled, a change that was announced along with the announcement of its end. The news hasn’t gone over well with fans, as a petition to save the game has garnered close to 20,000 signatures at the time of writing.

The Simpsons: Tapped Out is set to receive an update as a finale, but the rumors surrounding it suggest that this isn’t necessarily the end. Reddit user PrimalPokemonPlayer has revealed that holiday-themed statues will be added to the game, hinting at a farewell rather than a grand send-off. This has left many fans guessing that there might be more content in store for the game, and feeling that they’re not getting anything extraordinary. The reasons behind Electronic Arts shutting down the game are still unclear to fans.
