Every Ending In Silent Hill 2 Remake

As a seasoned survivor of Silent Hill, I must say that the journey through these alternate endings has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. Each ending offers a unique perspective on James’ emotional turmoil and his struggle to overcome his past.

The potential for replaying games can take many forms. In the case of the Silent Hill series, developed by Konami, they often incorporate numerous conclusions in their game designs. For instance, Silent Hill 2 originally had six endings, a number that was maintained in the remake but with slight adjustments. Additionally, two fresh endings were introduced for players to explore.

To reach these conclusions, you’ll need to navigate several steps and key points will be emphasized. However, this isn’t a step-by-step guide; instead, it provides a ranking of the effectiveness of all eight endings in the remake of Silent Hill 2. Be aware that there are spoilers ahead.

7 UFO

James Was A Clone?

  • Direct Requirements: New Game+ and find the Blue Gem and listen to its sounds to lead you to the ending for several steps

In the Silent Hill series, UFO-themed endings are a common trope, often intentionally low-quality. This installment is no exception, as James summons a UFO using a stone, followed by a green-toned silent film sequence with frozen frames. As he looks on, an alternate version of himself, dubbed Space James, emerges from the spacecraft. The James we know turns out to be a clone, with Space James and a typical alien creature extending an invitation for Earth James to return to the cosmos. While it’s undeniably strange and entertaining, many fans feel that this particular ending could have been improved upon in the remake version.

6 Stillness

James Has An Extra Passenger

  • Direct Requirements: New Game+, need Chainsaw and Key of Sorrow to begin quest inside Lakeview Hotel that will lead to this ending

The title for this conclusion is “Stillness,” which carries a straightforward yet unsettling feel. The scene unfolds with James stationed in his vehicle at the identical rest stop serving as the game’s starting point. He engages in conversation with Mary, who seems to be responding. However, Mary’s face remains concealed as her hands and other fragments appear intermittently throughout the ending. Newcomers might anticipate a frightening surprise at this juncture, but nothing harmful occurs. Instead, it is revealed that James is merely delusional, conversing with his wife within the confines of his car, marking the conclusion of the narrative.

5 In Water

Hearing Mary’s Letter In Full

  • Some Requirements: Take a lot of damage, check on key items like Mary’s Letter, read notes, and ignore Maria

In Water shares some resemblance with Stillness, yet the outcome could bring more joy to the players. A more fitting name might be Acceptance since the conclusion initiates with James conversing in his vehicle with Mary, only to later confess that she isn’t present. He ponders this, glancing at the rear of his car once more, setting the stage for a potential jump scare.

It doesn’t happen again though and as rain starts to pour, things go black and then the lake is shown as a letter blissfully glides down a shaft of light. Mary reads her own letter, revealing that James knew all along she was dead. It’s a bittersweet ending but beautiful in its simplicity nonetheless.

4 Bliss

Home Movies With A Sense Of Dread

  • Direct Requirements: New Game+, get the Rusted Key and Cryptic Note, follow the directions, drink the White Claudia, and view the tape in James’ room

The concept of happiness can be understood in multiple ways. Here, we see James entering a room, inserting a tape into a VCR, which suggests this game was created during the late 90s or early 2000s. He watches a recording of himself and Mary preparing to leave. As the scene concludes, James offers a peculiar gaze towards the camera, disregarding Mary’s worries that something is amiss. The tape comes to an end, and the viewpoint shifts to the room where James has vanished. It’s unclear whether he actually left his house after picking up Mary or if this was a deception. Alternatively, the smile he flashes into the camera could imply that James intends to harm Mary upon their return. The truth remains uncertain.

3 Dog

Oh, It Was A Dog All Along

  • Direct Requirements: New Game+, find parts to create the Dog Key, open the Observation Room in the Lakeview Hotel

In a surprising, almost comical twist reminiscent of an unusual UFO encounter, the conclusion of both ‘The Dog’ and ‘Silent Hill 2’ endings are equally unconventional. Despite its quirkiness, the production quality is commendable, making it a satisfying ending in its own right. As James steps into a control room, he demands the mysterious figure in the chair to reveal themselves. To his astonishment, it’s not a person, but a dog that has been orchestrating Silent Hill all along! Overwhelmed, James collapses to his knees, questioning his next move. However, the dog merely approaches him gently and licks him, leaving players with an unexpectedly light-hearted conclusion to such a dark game. Indeed, given the intense atmosphere of ‘Silent Hill 2’, this eccentric ending offers a welcome dose of levity for the audience.

2 Maria

Sacrificing One Love For Another

Every Ending In Silent Hill 2 Remake
  • Some Requirements: Check on key items like Mary’s Letter, listen to Maria, and protect Maria

From a certain perspective, Maria could be considered as having a hopeful resolution. The story unfolds when James encounters a physical embodiment of Mary, who harbors resentment towards him due to his inability to save her life. This figure then morphs into a monster, leading to a boss battle, which ultimately ends with her demise for the second time. By overcoming this challenge, James is granted the opportunity to revisit the past and rescue Maria.

He’s no longer involved with Mary and is ready to start fresh with someone new. As they walked towards his car, Maria began coughing, at which point James advised her to get that checked out. It’s possible that the virus Maria might be contracting could have played a role in Mary’s illness. Though there’s much more to consider, it does raise questions about James’s actions given he let go of Mary emotionally but still interacted with Maria.

1 Rebirth

Summoning The Old Gods

Every Ending In Silent Hill 2 Remake
  • Direct Requirements: New Game+, need items like the Book of Crimson Ceremony, the White Chrism, the Obsidian Goblet, and the Book of Lost Memories, and must play on Normal

In this game, I find myself in a familiar setting, reminiscent of my encounter with Maria. However, there’s an unexpected twist – James, who addresses me as “Mary,” reveals he knows I’m not who I seem. He suggests I’ve been trying to lead him astray, either by tempting him to stray or offering a deal that would compromise his integrity. I confess, and just like before, the boss battle ensues.

Leave

Is This The True Canon Ending?

Every Ending In Silent Hill 2 Remake
  • Some Requirements: Don’t look at key items like Mary’s Letter, don’t read a lot of notes unrelated to puzzles, Heal Often, and Ignore Maria when you can

The conclusion brings everything into alignment. James copes with Mary’s demise in two harsh manners. Initially, through a sequence of tough battles, and subsequently, by witnessing a weakened Mary. Additionally, it connects the narrative back to Laura, the child, whose tale is somewhat left unresolved for players who don’t reach this ending.

To put it simply, this conclusion is widely seen as the authentic one. It’s not exactly a joyful ending, but it will provide a sense of release for players. However, since the game was developed independently, there won’t be an actual “true” ending unless Konami or Bloober Team decide to follow Square Enix’s approach and create something like Silent Hill 2-2.
