As a fan who has followed Deku’s journey since his humble beginnings, I must say, it’s truly awe-inspiring to see him grow and adapt to new abilities with each passing episode. His latest encounters have been nothing short of breathtaking, showcasing not only his bravery but also his resilience in the face of adversity.
Over the course of the narrative in “My Hero Academia“, the main character, Deku, has significantly advanced on his challenging path. Initially, when audiences were introduced to Deku, he was a timid and powerless child, lacking a quirk and seemingly unable to achieve his dream of becoming a professional hero.
Currently, the character known as Deku who is now in the spotlight, has managed to obtain his Hero License and is rapidly progressing towards becoming a worthy successor that All Might can be truly proud of. It’s high time for critics to pause their constant criticism and acknowledge just how far Deku has come during his journey.
This list includes Deku’s development up to Season 7 Episode 13 of the anime, and will feature Spoilers for the events leading up to and during this point in the story.
18 Middle School: Quirkless And Ostracized
Episode: S1, Ep1
At the start of the story, viewers meet a protagonist who is extremely insecure and shy. When a boy named Deku learns he doesn’t have a superpower (quirk), the narrative skips ahead to his school years. Throughout this period, Deku is a quirkless student with an unwavering dream of becoming a hero.
Due to his ambitious aspiration, at that time, to become a hero and study at the renowned U.A. High School, Deku frequently encountered bullying from his peers. At this stage in his life, Deku only had his loving mother for encouragement as he pursued his lifelong goal of becoming a hero.
17 Meeting All Might: Beginning The 10-Month Training Program
Episode: S1, Ep3
At the beginning of Deku’s tale, he unexpectedly encounters his role model – All Might, who is renowned as the best pro hero globally. Aware of his challenging circumstances, Deku seizes this chance to speak with All Might, disclosing his lack of a quirk and expressing his determination to follow his dream of becoming a hero.
Initially, All Might expresses reservations about Deku’s dreams, considering them impractical. Yet, when Deku selflessly rushes to save Bakugo from a villain, All Might experiences a transformation in his thoughts. Consequently, he confides in Deku that he possesses the potential to become his successor and initiates Deku’s training phase. Given that Deku was an ordinary student without exceptional physical attributes initially, it was essential for All Might to first strengthen Deku’s physically vulnerable body to handle his quirk’s power.
16 Training Completed: Deku Inherits All For One
Episode: S1, Ep3
At last, Deku finishes the tough training regimen that All Might designed for him. With his diligent effort and his mom’s supportive dietary guidance, Deku has now reached a point where he’s considered prepared to receive All Might’s superpower.
To Deku’s astonishment, this procedure involved an unusual custom – consuming a strand of All Might’s hair. This is where we discover the mechanism behind how All Might’s quirk is transferred: it happens through a voluntary swap of any item carrying the previous user’s genetic material.
15 U.A. Entrance Exams: Deku Uses OFA For The First Time
Episode: S1, Ep4
For the very first time, during the admissions tests at U.A. High, Deki utilizes his quirk in a test situation. In this examination, he feels bewildered by the display of skills and experience from his peers. In a critical moment where he’s trying to rescue Uraraka, Deki successfully triggers the power of One For All for the first time, as his strong desire to safeguard and protect others sets it off.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share my excitement as I recount an unforgettable moment: the instant when Deku unleashed his powers for the first time. This was also the time when he shattered nearly every bone in his body and learned the brutal impact such a potent quirk could have on his physical well-being.
14 Sports Festival: First Encounter With Previous OFA Users
Episode: S2, Ep7
After acing my entrance into U.A. High, I find myself diving headfirst into their annual sports festival. In this event, I’m paired up with my classmate Shinso Hitoshi – the guy who can mess with people’s minds just by chatting them up! It’s going to be an interesting challenge, that’s for sure.
Overwhelmed by Shinso’s brainwashing, Deku becomes frantic and spots mysterious figures lurking outside the arena. In a bid to escape Shinso’s grip, he triggers his quirk, marking the first instance where Deku encounters the former users of OFA. It is these individuals who ultimately contribute to Deku’s eventual triumph over Shinso.
13 Fight Against Muscular: First Usage Of OFA At 100 And 100,000,000%
Episode: S3, Ep4
So far, I’ve been cautioned about pushing my quirk too hard, as it was evident that excessive use of One For All took a toll on my body. But in an alarming encounter with the formidable villain Muscular, I found myself with no other option but to unleash One For All at its maximum capacity to save an innocent boy named Kota.
In an unexpected twist, Muscular successfully withstands Deku’s full-strength smash, persisting in chasing both him and Kota. Pushed to the brink of exhaustion, Deku ultimately resorts to using One For All at an incredible 1 million percent. Despite his triumph in this battle, it was only his surge of adrenaline and worry for Kota’s safety that enabled Deku to disregard his wounds and escape afterwards.
12 Full Cowling: Deku Develops A New Style & New Armor
Episode: S3, Ep 14
So far, the crowd has seen a young, determined Deku strive to emulate his role model, All Might. However, it seems that Deku’s admiration for All Might led him to mimic his hero instead of developing his own unique hero identity.
Following his harrowing run-in with Muscular, Deku resolved to create a distinct fighting method all his own – one born from his creative thoughts, separate from All Might’s approach. With the assistance of U.A.’s nurturing support staff member Mei Hatsume, Deku subsequently developed the Full Cowling Shoot Style – an innovative combat technique that emphasizes kicks over punches and is bolstered by Mei’s leg-strengthening armor.
11 Fight Against Overhaul: Aided By Eri, Deku Freely Uses OFA At 100%
Episode: S4, Ep13
During the climactic showdown against Overhaul, I was still grappling with the colossal power of One For All. It was then that I stumbled upon Eri’s unique ability to “rewind humans,” which enabled me to fully unleash OFA without my body bearing the brunt of its consequences.
Even though Eri struggled with managing her quirk, it gave Deku an opportunity to continue his assault, allowing her to rewind something else within him. By exploiting this ability, Deku was able to overpower Overhaul and bring him under control.
10 Heroes Rising: Deku Transfers Half Of OFA To Bakugo
Film: My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising
In an incredibly tough battle within the scope of the entire ‘Heroes Rising’ series, the characters Deku and his classmates find themselves stretched to their maximum capabilities when they cross paths with the villain Nine. Nine, who is linked to the primary antagonist All For One, appears to overpower both a wounded Bakugo and Deku. With very few alternatives left, Deku chooses to transfer One For All’s power (OFA) to Bakugo, thus having two active carriers of OFA simultaneously.
Currently, Kacchan’s peculiarity has been divided into two aspects: Bakugo is now officially using One For All (OFA) temporarily. Despite Nine’s defeat in this intense battle, the flames of Deku’s quirk gradually weaken as he, cautious and exhausted, succumbs to unconsciousness.
9 Nine Aftermath: OFA Users Transfer Quirk Back To Deku
Film: My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising
At the conclusion of the movie, the heroic group eventually reach Nabu Island following the fight. All Might locates a wounded Deku and Bakugo, and realizes that while Deku’s quirk embers died out, One For All somehow returned to Deku, with Bakugo having no memory of the events.
In this interpretation, All Might understands that the past users of One For All are reviving its power within Deku, as they desire for him to carry on as the designated bearer (unfortunately, not Bakugo this time).
8 Joint Training Battle: Deku Manifests Blackwhip
Episode: S5, Ep 10
Currently, Deku experiences dreams featuring past wielders of One For All. At first, he dismisses these dreams as ordinary nightmares. However, over time, he comes to realize that these past wielders are attempting to convey a message to him.
In the team training session, Deku subsequently unleashes an enigmatic ability known as Blackwhip. This unique power materializes as dark, radiant tendrils, appearing within Deku from the Quirk of a former One For All (OFA) user. It’s at this point that he discovers his OFA core is expanding and growing more potent; leading to him manifesting the accumulated abilities from all past OFA users.
7 Encounter With A Reborn Shigaraki: Deku Activates Float For The First Time
Episode: S6, Ep 9
In the chilling resurrection of Shigaraki, Endeavor and his group are left perplexed when they observe Shigaraki’s unique Decay quirk expanding past the items he physically touches. With the urgent need to subdue and apprehend Shigaraki, Deku activates a fresh talent: the power of levitation, or Float.
Previously owned by Nana Shimura, the Float quirk empowers Deku with the capacity to hover aloft, bridging the gap between him and Shigaraki during their intense fight, all while avoiding potential attacks from Shigaraki’s harmful Decay power.
6 Paranormal Liberation War: Deku Creates His Own Usage Of Blackwhip
Episode: S6, Ep 13
During season six, Deku has become more adept at using Blackwhip. In the heat of the Paranormal Liberation War, Deku struggles to keep up with Dabi when he discovers that both his arms are incapacitated due to overusing One For All at maximum strength on multiple occasions.
In a typical scenario, Deku manipulates his Blackwhip tendrils using his arms. However, due to recent bruises making his arms sore, he turns to his U.A. classmate Froppy for inspiration. Froppy’s combat style is unique, as she uses her long tongue like an extra limb to grasp enemies without needing her hands. Impressed by this, Deku adapted his Blackwhip, producing a tendril from his mouth instead of his arms, much like how Froppy fights.
5 Bakugo Injured: Danger Sense Manifests For The First Time
Episode: S6, Ep 13
In the heat of the fierce clash with Shigaraki, Bakugo sustains grievous wounds. Enraged and distressed by the pandemonium surrounding him, Deku unleashes a fresh ability called Peril Awareness in response. Unfortunately, Deku is still unfamiliar with this new quirk and triggers it without fully grasping its workings or utilizing it effectively during the battle.
In the heat of this intense fight, Deku encounters a warning signal through a throbbing headache. Yet it’s only toward the climax of this huge battle that Deku comes to realize that the discomfort he had been enduring was actually the power of the fourth user of One For All, Hikage Shinomori, manifesting within him.
4 Overpowered By All For One: Deku Is Paralyzed By The Overusage Of His OFA Quirks
Episode: S6, Ep 18
Overwhelmed by his pain and rage upon witnessing his companions and role models losing control and fearing for their lives, Deku pushes his newly acquired abilities to their extreme limits during his battle against Dabi and Shigaraki. In this confrontation, he demonstrates two unprecedented quirks that were passed down from previous One For All users, along with a novel application of Blackwhip – a relatively recent acquisition for him – which he developed himself. However, in the heat of his anger over the destruction wrought by Shigaraki, Deku unexpectedly finds himself momentarily incapacitated.
In that moment, Deku understands that excessively using his new abilities could cause him to become temporarily immobile. Similarly, just as he had to gradually adapt his body to One For All’s power, he now recognizes that he needs to gradually acclimate his body to the quirks of all previous users of One For All too.
3 Reunion With Muscular: Deku Uses Smokescreen
Episode: S6, Ep 19
As Shindo, his fellow hero trainee, struggled against a recently liberated Muscular, Deku intervened to turn the tide. But with the public beginning to discover that heroes had been hiding things from them, Deku knew it was crucial to keep his identity hidden as he tracked down and apprehended all the escaped prisoners.
This new, hardened Deku is already fairly proficient with Smokescreen, the quirk inherited by the sixth OFA user, En. Smokescreen is the ability to manifest a purple cloud of smoke/fog in order to obscure the battlefield or conceal the user’s location. Although Deku uses Smokescreen against Muscular comfortably, he still hasn’t completely mastered the new technique as he does fumble and emits an excess of smoke at one point, temporarily obscuring his own vision.
2 Meeting Lady Nagant: Deku Awakens Fa Jin
Episode: S6, Ep 21
In his fight against the ex-pro hero Lady Nagant, Deke struggles as her gunfire is swift and hard to evade. Amidst the clash, another dormant quirk from a past One For All user, Fa Jin, surfaces within him.
Fa Jin, a unique skill possessed by the third OFA user, allows them to accumulate or generate kinetic energy by performing repeated movements. In this instance, Deku temporarily paused while avoiding Lady Nagant, then swiftly performed a few squats to amass energy in his legs for later use during the fight. Eventually, he outperformed the ex-pro.
1 Confronting Shigaraki: Deku Uses Gearshift For The First Time
Episode: S7, Ep13
When Deku encounters Shigaraki, he’s first taken aback by the sight of his injured allies. Mirio swiftly snaps him out of it and they resume fighting. In this moment, Deku activates Gearshift, a power he inherited from the second bearer of OFA, Kudo. With rage coursing through him, Deku could now alter the rate at which objects move through space. This incredible ability enabled Deku to rain blows on Shigaraki, and even manipulate object speeds, defying the usual laws of inertia.
Revealing this peculiar ability, Deku sped past the speed of sound, aiming to bewilder Shigaraki with his extraordinary swiftness.
