As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the latest additions to FragPunk‘s roster have piqued my interest significantly. The Jaguar, with his electric traps and passive marking system, seems like the kind of character who can control the battlefield effectively, much like a cat does in its natural habitat.
The market for hero-shooter games is becoming increasingly congested. Currently, Overwatch 2 is experiencing a revival, Valve’s Deadlock is picking up steam during its playtest phase, and Marvel Rivals is preparing for launch in the near future. To stand out, it’s not sufficient for a hero shooter to simply boast strong mechanics and aesthetics; it must offer something distinctive. Fortunately, FragPunk could potentially provide that unique selling point.
On October 10th, the closed beta for the innovative 5v5 hero shooter, FragPunk, is scheduled to commence. Unlike traditional hero shooters, FragPunk offers a unique twist by defying genre conventions in its gameplay. Although the core mechanics of each encounter will resonate with fans of hero shooters, FragPunk introduces Shard Cards, which serve as power-ups and significantly alter the dynamics of gameplay. To complement this exhilarating experience, FragPunk boasts an impressive roster of Lancers – their term for the playable characters.
FragPunk’s Broker
Skill Damage, Vision Control, Trap Placement
- Goddard’s Vengeance: Shoulder-mounted rocket that deals explosive damage and knockback
- Smokestack Lightning: Deployable smoke screen that emits lightning
- Cherry Bomb: Explosive projectile
Among the initial characters unveiled for FragPunk, Broker specializes in inflicting significant explosive damage and causing confusion among enemies. Equipped with a potent shoulder-launched rocket system and destructive cherry bombs, he can also escape unnoticed by deploying a smoke screen.
Nitro
Fortification Defense, Trap Placement
- Chug Chug: Tactical combat drone that can be operated remotely
- The Wall: Throws down three pieces of cover
- Mr. PewPew: Automatic sentry turret
Using a remote-controlled battle drone, deployable shield, and an autonomous guard tower, Nitro’s skills inspire players to establish a defensive position near strategic objectives or valuable locations. This setup allows for protective gunfire while hiding behind cover.
Hollowpoint
Skill Damage, Trap Placement, Vision Control
- One Last Kiss: Single-shot electromagnetic sniper rifle with variable zoom optics. Aiming down sights charges the weapon and reveals enemies in FOV
- Smoke Screen: Deploys a dense smoke screen
- Paparazzi: Deployable trap automatically detects nearby enemies
Among FragPunk’s Lancers, Hollowpoint is particularly adept, armed with a potent single-shot electromagnetic sniper rifle. When aiming through the sights, this sniper rifle builds up its power and highlights any adversaries within Hollowpoint’s line of sight. Hollowpoint excels at long-range combat, but players may find it challenging to utilize her effectively in close-quarters settings. However, she can swiftly escape such situations by deploying a smoke screen.
Kismet
Detection, Skill Damage
- Hello, Goodbye: Generates a frontal scan of all nearby enemies
- Misery Angel: Explosive projectile that ignores barriers
- Walk on the Wild Side: Enter Rift Walk for a brief time. Become invisible and invincible in this state but lose the ability to see other Lancers
Fate, or Kismet as she’s called, focuses primarily on gathering intelligence. Her unique “Hello, Goodbye” skill uncovers the locations of her foes. Meanwhile, her “Walk on the Wild Side” talent complements this spycraft, providing temporary invisibility and indestructibility. This allows her to infiltrate enemy lines undetected or flee a battle swiftly when needed.
Serket
Vision Control, Area Delay, Teleportation
- Station to Station: Place a controllable beacon that can be teleported to
- Gold Dust Woman: Dust tornado projectile that slows enemies
- Dilemma: Projectile that pulls enemies toward it
Judging solely by her skill set, it appears that Serket might become one of FragPunk’s most potent Lancers. Her “Station to Station” ability allows her to teleport to a distant beacon, while her two projectile abilities can be used to draw in and restrain enemies, providing ample opportunity to eliminate these foes effectively.
Corona
Teleportation, Area Delay, Frontal Assault
- Fast Lane: Dashes a short distance
- Ashes to Ashes: Projectile that creates a “War Zone.” While in War Zone, Corona’s oncoming damage is reduced
- Hothead: Blinds enemies in Corona’s FOV
For players seeking a more aggressive approach, Corona excels in charging head-on into a cluster of enemies, dealing significant damage before swiftly retreating, often leaving enemies disoriented by his stunning “Hothead” move that temporarily blinds them.
Axon
Skill Damage, Frontal Assault
- Electric Guitar: Modified electric guitar that shoots projectiles and deals high damage at close range.
- Sticky Fingers: Sticky explosive grenades
- Super Freak: Immune to vision effects
In simpler terms, Axon, another type of Frontal Assault Lancer, is unaffected by any adverse visual impacts, making him free to advance into combat without hindrance. Equipped with a modified electric guitar, he unleashes powerful attacks on enemies, also throwing sticky grenades that inflict significant explosive damage.
Jaguar
Trap Placement, Vision Control, Detection
- Live Wire: Electric shock trap that deals damage and slows nearby enemies, tags enemies with a Hunter’s Last Gift mark
- Electric Avenue: Traps enemies in an electric cage, tags them with a Hunter’s Last Gift mark
- I Can See for Miles: Those tagged with the Hunter’s Last Gift mark can be seen through walls
Jaguar’s capabilities center around the passive skill known as “Hunter’s Last Gift.” This passive trait marks enemies whenever Jaguar successfully lands a hit with one of his other abilities. Once the ability “I Can See for Miles” is activated, any enemy bearing the Hunter’s Last Gift mark will have their location exposed.
Pathojen
Health Recovery, Fortification Defense, Trap Placement
- Emotional Rescue: Projectile that heals allies in its AoE
- Shroom Wall: Places a wall made of mushrooms
- Killer Queen: Automatic trap that deals poison damage to enemies over time
In the lineup of healers for FragPunk, it’s clear that Pathojen stands out due to her unique skillset. Her most beneficial trait is the “Emotional Rescue” projectile, which restores health to any allies in its vicinity. Additionally, Pathojen can create a Shroom Wall, much like Mei’s Ice Wall in Overwatch, altering the game environment.
Zephyr
Assassin, Area Delay, Teleportation
- Midnight Rambler: Cycles through full and partial invisibility while using melee weapons
- Fade Away: Mark area to engage full invisibility while using Midnight Rambler
- Dagger Beacon: Thrown projectile that can be teleported to
The skills of Zephyr foster a hit-and-run game approach, as their “Midnight Rambler” talent allows them to swiftly move across the map while being invisible. Furthermore, they possess the “Dagger Beacon” ability, which enables them to toss a projectile and instantly teleport to it. It’s challenging for fans of Overwatch not to notice similarities between Zephyr and Sombra.
Sonar & Spider
The latest recruits for FragPunk, named Sonar and Spider, were unveiled at the Tokyo Game Show. As of now, their complete set of abilities remains undisclosed; however, it’s been hinted that Sonar possesses sound-based powers enabling him to detect enemy movements, while Spider is equipped with trapping capabilities for capturing opponents.
