Every Improvement in Soul Reaver 1 and 2 Remastered So Far

As a long-time fanatic of the Legacy of Kain series, the news about the Soul Reaver 1 and 2 remastered is like finding a lost treasure in my gaming closet! I remember spending countless hours exploring the dark, gothic world of Nosgoth on my old PlayStation back in the day. The thought that these classics are getting a facelift for modern platforms is nothing short of exhilarating!

Among the 2000s video game franchises that enthusiasts have eagerly anticipated a comeback for, none perhaps stir more excitement than the dark and Gothic action-adventure series known as Legacy of Kain. Though it has garnered a devoted cult following, this esteemed collection of games has been inactive for over two decades. The initial installment, the 1996 PlayStation title Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, was both critically acclaimed and commercially successful, leading to several sequels. However, since 2003’s Legacy of Kain: Defiance, initiatives to advance the Crystal Dynamics-created series have repeatedly stalled, with games such as Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun and the multiplayer spin-off Nosgoth being terminated by publisher Square Enix. To make matters worse, gamers have been unable to experience the Legacy of Kain titles on modern consoles due to them being confined to outdated hardware since their initial releases; that is, until today.

During the September 2024 State of Play event, the long-awaiting fans of the Legacy of Kain series received a delightful surprise. Crystal Dynamics announced that two highly acclaimed games from the series, specifically Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 and 2, will be revamped for contemporary gaming platforms. This updated version is being led by Aspyr, who was responsible for remastering Tomb Raider 1-3. The anticipated release date for this revamp is December 10, 2024, and it will be available on PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Although the Soul Reaver games might not receive a full remake as some enthusiasts had hoped, their remastered versions will feature several enhancements in graphics and gameplay.

Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1 and 2 Remastered Makes Many Improvements to the Classic Games

Improved Graphical Facelift That Can Be Toggled On and Off

In these updated versions of the “Soul Reaver” series, the most striking improvement lies undeniably in the graphics. Both games have undergone substantial upgrades to their visuals, lighting, character models, textures, and special effects. Given that “Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver” and its sequel were initially released on PlayStation 1 and 2, these modifications were essential for modernization; after all, the games haven’t held up visually over time. Yet, for those who prefer the original graphics, there’s an option to do so. In “Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 and 2 Remastered”, you can switch between new and old visuals with a simple button press, much like in “Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered” or “Halo: The Master Chief Collection”.

Enhanced, Switchable Control Schemes

The controls in Soul Reaver 1 and 2 have been updated, as well. The remastered versions of the games give players the option to choose between classic controls and new, modern control schemes that feature, among other things, improved camera functionality. The revamped controls in one of Aspyr’s more recent remaster compilations, the aforementioned Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered, was criticized for feeling out of place, so hopefully, that won’t be an issue in these Soul Reaver re-releases.

New Gameplay Features, Including a Photo Mode and In-Game Map

Beyond the improvements, the remastered versions of “Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 and 2” come with additional gameplay elements as well. For instance, an in-game map and compass have been integrated into both games to facilitate navigation more smoothly. Additionally, a photo mode is planned for release alongside the original games on PlayStation and Xbox at launch. Furthermore, new trophies and achievements are also part of the package. Aspyr Media has yet to disclose the details about the complexity of this photo mode.

Concept Art Gallery, Lore Map, and Other Bonus Materials

Similar to numerous contemporary re-editions of timeless games, the remastered versions of Soul Reaver 1 and 2, titled “Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver Remastered”, come with extra features that dedicated fans of the series can delve into. As of now, Aspyr Media has confirmed that this compilation includes an interactive timeline, a gallery showcasing concept art, and what the developer refers to as “environments from the legendary ‘Lost Levels’.” It remains undetermined whether these “Lost Levels” are playable areas or simply backstory elements. Regardless, they could potentially be a standout aspect of this Soul Reaver remaster collection.
