Every Lord of the Rings Location Referenced in Tales of the Shire

In terms of fantasy realms, it’s hard to find any as extensive or cherished as J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Stretching from the snowy heights of the Lonely Mountain in the north down to the dismal pits of Mordor in the south, every corner of this world is deeply ingrained in the minds of dedicated ‘Lord of the Rings’ enthusiasts. Unlike previous ‘Lord of the Rings’ video games that offered expansive continent-wide journeys, Tales of the Shire opts to zero in on its namesake tranquil region.

In a peaceful life simulation game titled “Tales of the Shire“, we delve into the tranquil existence of Middle-earth’s most laid-back creatures, away from the tumultuous War of the Ring. The Shire is the perfect haven for oblivious bliss. Although the game zeroes in on this small corner of Middle-earth, its residents eagerly spread tales and rumors about the larger world beyond.

Every Lord of the Rings Location That Appears or Is Referenced in Tales of the Shire

Bywater

In the tranquil Hobbit game called Tales of the Shire, Bywater is still just a budding village. However, in the span of several decades, this idyllic village will unfortunately witness the bloodiest battle in Shire history. This is because Saruman, seeking revenge on Gandalf after his defeat at Isengard, intends to lay waste to the peaceful Bywater.

Green Dragon Inn

In Bywater, several iconic Shire landmarks reside, but none are as renowned as the Green Dragon Inn. This tavern, famous for being the meeting place where Bilbo Baggins gathered with Thorin and his dwarf companions, was also a favorite haunt for Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Peregrin Took, and Meriadoc Brandybuck before and after they became part of the Fellowship of the Ring. In fact, this inn is even the subject of a song sung by Pippin and Merry in Edoras during The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. In the game Tales of the Shire, players can drop by the Green Dragon and engage with its Cotton family proprietors at any time.

Brandywine River

The Brandywine River, which snakes through much of the Shire, serves as a distinct boundary for many Hobbits, separating their familiar world from what they perceive as the unknown and potentially hazardous regions beyond. Even the town inhabited by Hobbits on the opposite side of the river, known as Buckland, is viewed with a sense of mystery and potential danger.

Hobbiton

Without a doubt, Hobbiton is the most well-known attraction in the Shire, serving as both the residence of the Bagginses and the backdrop for the first act of “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring”. Although players don’t actually get to explore the nearby town mentioned in “Tales of the Shire”, it is often referred to by the townspeople of Bywater within the game.

Bree

As a fan, I’d like to share that my character in ‘Tales of the Shire’ didn’t originate from Bywater, but instead hails from Bree, a vibrant town where Hobbits and Men coexist. To reach Bywater, my character traversed beyond the Prancing Pony, boarded the Bucklebury Ferry, and crossed the Brandywine River.

Mirkwood

Engaging with a towering tree within the world of Tales of the Shire may trigger the player-character to recall a tale they once heard about fearsome spiders lurking in Mirkwood. This is an homage to J.R.R. Tolkien’s works, specifically The Hobbit, where the spiders of Mirkwood inflicted poison on Radagast’s woodland creatures, and The Lord of the Rings, with the spiders of Mirkwood being direct descendants of Shelob.

Fangorn Forest

The Fangorn Forest is often spoken about in the same context as Mirkwood, and the player-character recalls stories where trees tower “abnormally high.” This is a more overt reference to “Lord of the Rings,” hinting at the Ents who inhabit the Fangorn Forest.

Khazad-dum

In the story “Tales of the Shire,” it’s worth noting that while many of its non-player characters (NPCs) are Hobbits, there is a dwarf named Nefi who operates the local forge. Occasionally, Nefi will mention Khazad-dum, a vast dwarven city that was tragically destroyed by the Balrog, their ancestral homeland.
