Over the past five years, Jujutsu Kaisen has become a hugely popular anime, and its memorable characters are a big reason why. While the show is famous for its incredible action sequences – considered by many to be among the best ever – the story of Yuji, a regular student turned powerful sorcerer struggling with inner demons, is also captivating.

Throughout his journey, he encounters the captivating Gojo, forms bonds with Megumi and Nobara, and clashes with several adversaries who want to destroy him. While Gege Akutami’s finished manga and its anime adaptation aren’t without flaws – some might even call it unrealized potential – the characters in Jujutsu Kaisen remain some of the most memorable in recent anime history.

While Panda’s exact age is unknown, many fans believe he’s around 16 or 17 years old, similar to the ages of his peers Maki and Toge.

Yuji Itadori begins the anime as a cheerful 15-year-old, the typical age for a high school freshman in Japan. While he’s unusually muscular for a teenage athlete, that’s common for the main character in action-packed anime. Yuji moves the story along, though other characters sometimes stand out. He’s driven by his feelings, determined, and full of energy – qualities you often see in the heroes of these kinds of action anime.

Yuji’s journey truly starts when he eats a piece of Sukuna, throwing him into the world of Jujutsu Sorcerers. Though he initially appeared fated to become a host for the powerful King of Curses, Yuji’s determination lets him stay in control of his own body, but this comes with the risky agreement of sharing space with Sukuna.

Itadori has a huge reserve of cursed energy because of Sukuna residing within him. Recognizing Itadori’s great potential, Gojo Satoru decided to train him, hoping he could learn to control Sukuna.

Sukuna, often called the King of Curses, is the oldest character in the series, having lived for over 1,000 years. Because of his long life and changing forms, he doesn’t have a recorded birthday. His height isn’t fixed either; it varies depending on the demonic form he’s currently using. In the anime, when inhabiting Yuji’s body, he appears to be the same height as Yuji: 5′ 8″ (173 cm).

Sukuna doesn’t appear constantly throughout Jujutsu Kaisen, but his influence is massive. It’s not just about his connection to Yuji; many characters are motivated by either wanting to obtain Sukuna’s fingers or are terrified of—or even worship—him. He’s an incredibly dangerous enemy, and everyone knows it.

Sukuna is undeniably the strongest curse in the series. He has a massive and seemingly limitless supply of cursed energy, allowing him to effortlessly defeat opponents. While he hasn’t revealed his full capabilities yet, it’s clear he’s incredibly powerful and will likely demonstrate even greater strength soon.

Megumi Fushiguro

Megumi begins his journey in Jujutsu Kaisen at the same age as Yuji, and they study together at the demanding Tokyo Jujutsu High. Born a Capricorn, he’s highly driven, competitive, and determined to become a powerful jujutsu sorcerer, just like his teacher. While he cares about others, he prefers not to show it openly. Despite being only slightly taller than Yuji, his distinctive spiky hair makes him appear a bit more imposing.

At first, Megumi seems distant and even unfriendly towards Yuji. But of the three characters fans often debate, he’s arguably the most fascinating. When challenged, his strong personal values become very clear.

While Megumi Fushigoro doesn’t have as much cursed energy as Itadori, he’s still a remarkably skilled sorcerer. His unique Ten Shadows technique lets him summon a diverse range of powerful Shikigami.

Nobara Kugasaki

Nobara is a bit older than her teammates, Megumi and Yuji, and starts her sorcerer training in Tokyo with a lot of confidence and a playful attitude. She’s a naturally gifted sorcerer and a strong asset to the world of jujutsu. With more training, both physically and emotionally, she had the potential to become even more powerful. Her energetic, humorous, and strong-willed personality perfectly matches her zodiac sign, Leo.

Nobara is a somewhat divisive character in Jujutsu Kaisen, but this is mainly due to the events of her storyline, not her personality. She’s known for being determined and having an exciting fighting style, and fans generally enjoy her scenes when she gets the chance to be in the spotlight – which unfortunately doesn’t happen very often.

Nobara is a powerful and capable sorcerer who has consistently demonstrated her strength. Her unique Straw Doll technique lets her harm opponents using cursed energy.

Satoru Gojo

Born in 1989, Gojo is an exceptionally powerful jujutsu sorcerer. Despite his young age, he’s incredibly skilled, thanks to both extensive training and a natural talent for the art. He’s much taller than his students—a towering figure who is surprisingly agile and quick. In fact, his height doesn’t hinder his speed at all. As a Sagittarius, he embodies strong leadership qualities and a resolute spirit.

Gojo is a complex character – he’s mysterious, confident to the point of arrogance, and often makes jokes, but can also be quite lazy. While he does care about others, his extreme self-assurance sometimes puts them at risk. In fact, his tendency to avoid responsibility is what ultimately caused Yuji to ingest Sukuna’s finger.

Gojo Satoru is considered the most powerful Jujutsu sorcerer globally. He demonstrated his incredible strength early in the series by easily defeating very powerful curses. His abilities, Limitless and Infinity, are his most devastating techniques.

Masamichi Yaga

Masamichi Yaga heads Tokyo Jujutsu High, playing a key role in the story. As the school’s principal, he’s also one of the most powerful Jujutsu sorcerers in the series.

Masamichi Yaga is a dedicated and serious professional, but he deeply cares about his students. While usually reserved, he isn’t afraid to show his feelings when necessary. He’s also a rare character with a strong moral compass.

Masamichi Yaga is incredibly skilled in cursed energy manipulation, specifically in creating puppets. He mastered this technique to the point where he could build puppets, such as Panda, that could function independently.

Maki Zenin

Many fans, including myself, consider Maki to be one of the strongest and most compelling characters in Jujutsu Kaisen, despite not always being a central focus in the manga and anime. Though she’s a capable sorcerer who can handle many enemies, she often feels like a supporting character to the main heroes and Gojo. Thankfully, it looks like she’ll continue to play an important role in the story, and we’ll likely see her get more attention in future adaptations.

To really understand Maki and see her shine, watch Jujutsu Kaisen 0: Jujutsu High. She’s a main character alongside Yuta, and the movie explores her tragic and compelling history with the Zenin clan. It also offers a great look into the world of sorcerers, and she’s definitely one of the best parts of the story.

Despite not having any cursed energy, Maki is an incredibly powerful sorcerer. Her greatest strength is her exceptional physical power, which surpasses most other characters in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Toge Inumaki

Toge Inumaki doesn’t say much and doesn’t appear often, so he could easily be a minor character in Jujutsu Kaisen. But surprisingly, he’s quite popular! Though not as well-known as someone like Gojo, he has a dedicated fanbase thanks to his striking appearance, mysterious personality, and a powerful, attention-grabbing Cursed Technique.

Inumaki has a special technique called Cursed Speech that prevents him from talking normally, which unfortunately limits his role in the story. After a major event called the Kyoto Goodwill Event, he appears less frequently in the manga, though he still makes occasional appearances. It’s a shame he isn’t featured more prominently in Jujutsu Kaisen, but he remains a fascinating character.

Toge’s Cursed Speech is a powerful technique. He can use cursed energy through his words to control people and make them follow his orders.

Panda

Panda is a second-year student who trains alongside Toge and Maki. He’s unusually tall – a full 6’7″ – though he’s not actually a panda! He’s a friendly cursed spirit who appears as one.

Born on March 5th, this powerful fighter is a Pisces, just like Yuji. While his exact age is unknown, he’s probably around 16 or 17, similar to Maki and Toge – though age might work differently for pandas!

Panda is a unique and powerful being created by Masamichi Yaga. He’s essentially a cursed body with three ‘cores’ that each contribute to his overall strength.

Kinji Hakari

For a long time, Jujutsu Kaisen didn’t reveal much about the third-year students at Tokyo Jujutsu High, finally introducing them in season 3 with the Culling Game arc. These two things are closely connected, so let’s start with Kinji Hakari. He’s a powerful sorcerer who does things his own way and was exiled after a conflict with a Jujutsu official. He doesn’t seem interested in regaining favor with the organization’s leaders, but he does have respect for people like Gojo.

Hakari runs a fight club for people with a strong “Fever” – a deep passion and determination to achieve their goals. He isn’t motivated by money or fame, but by finding individuals with this intense drive, and the more passionate someone is, the more interested he becomes. While he can be arrogant and unpleasant, Hakari isn’t truly a bad person and will offer help to those who impress him.

Hakari is incredibly strong, potentially even stronger than Yuta. While he has a variety of attacks, his true strength lies in his exceptional luck. His special ability, or Domain Expansion, is based on the pachinko game, and he needs to win a jackpot to become completely invincible. Fortunately for him, he’s lucky enough to consistently achieve this.

Kirara Hoshi

Kirara Hoshi is a fascinating character introduced later in Jujutsu Kaisen, and they stand out among other Jujutsu Sorcerers with their unusual personality. Unlike most sorcerers, Kirara doesn’t seem very concerned with their duties, focusing instead on their strong interest in Hakari. They’re quite fixated on their classmate and actively try to keep him to themselves. While Kirara dislikes Tokyo Jujutsu High, they are open to working with sorcerers who aren’t affiliated with the school.

Kirara often seems like Hakari’s helper, and appears less powerful. But don’t be fooled – Kirara is a serious threat with a very effective cursed technique. They’re also incredibly intelligent and can strategically outmaneuver most enemies.

Kirara’s ‘Love Rendezvous’ is a powerful ability where she marks targets with stars. If two targets share the same star, they’re drawn together. Different stars mean they can only connect by following a specific sequence. Because Kirara has to physically touch a target to begin the process, it can be tricky to use effectively.

Kento Nanami

Kento Nanami, appearing around the middle of the first season, is a skilled sorcerer who becomes an important guide for Yuji, possibly even more helpful than Gojo. Unlike the flamboyant Satoru, Nanami is quiet and practical, viewing his work as a Jujutsu Sorcerer simply as a job.

Nanami is unusual among sorcerers because he initially chose to leave that world behind and work a regular office job. But after a few years, he found that this work wasn’t satisfying. So, he went back to being a Jujutsu Sorcerer, though he doesn’t idealize that lifestyle at all.

Nanami is a highly skilled sorcerer, considered a role model by many younger practitioners. While possessing a large reserve of cursed energy, he uses it efficiently. His unique technique, the Ratio Technique, allows him to create a vulnerability in his opponents’ bodies.

Takuma Ino

I have to admit, Takuma Ino doesn’t exactly stand out. He’s a Grade 2 Sorcerer, which is good, but it’s easy to assume he won’t be much help against really powerful Cursed Spirits. Honestly, both opponents and viewers probably underestimate him. But I’ve realized there’s a lot more to Takuma than meets the eye. His grade doesn’t really reflect how skilled he is; it’s more about his dedication to working with Kento Nanami.

Takuma doesn’t have a huge role in the anime, but he really stands out when he does get the chance. He’s most memorable for his fight against Ogami and her grandson during the Shibuya Incident, where he puts up a good fight until Ogami catches him off guard with a unique ability. Later in the story, Takuma also takes on a mentoring role for Yuji.

Takuma is already a skilled fighter, but his most powerful ability lets him summon four spirit beasts to aid him in battle. He activates this power by wearing a mask, which connects him to the spirits of Ryu, Reiki, Kirin, and Kaichi. While the idea of summoning these Auspicious Beasts is really interesting, it isn’t featured much in the Jujutsu Kaisen series.

Atsuya Kusakabe

Atsuya Kusakabe, like many secondary characters, has a mysterious background – even the official fanbook doesn’t reveal his birthday. Despite this, he’s a surprisingly complete character, and one of the few top-level jujutsu sorcerers who fights without using cursed techniques. He first appears during the intense Shibuya Incident arc, but doesn’t immediately make a good impression, as he’s hesitant to directly help Gojo.

When a crisis hits, Atsuya immediately takes charge, proving he’s brave and will risk everything to protect people. This is especially important because his main goal is to save ordinary civilians caught in the conflict between curses and sorcerers. He highlights the fact that many lives are at stake, not just those of the main characters.

Atsuya is unique because he doesn’t use cursed techniques; his strength comes from his exceptional swordsmanship. Because of this, he’s considered one of the most skilled fighters in Jujutsu Kaisen, though his potential for growth might not be as high as other Grade 1 sorcerers.

Kiyotaka Ijichi

Not everyone is destined to be a powerful fighter like Yuji or Gojo, and that’s okay. Kiyotaka Ijichi realized he wasn’t cut out to be a frontline sorcerer at Tokyo Jujutsu High, but he found a valuable role as a leader and support figure. By the start of the main story, he’s become the school’s assistant manager, giving him the power to coordinate sorcerers during critical moments. While he might not be able to defeat the most dangerous curses on his own, he’s still a skilled and helpful ally in most situations.

Kiyotaka might not be the most exciting character in Jujutsu Kaisen, but he’s a great addition to the series. In anime with incredibly powerful characters who can do almost anything, someone more relatable helps keep things balanced. He makes the battles feel more grounded, preventing them from becoming just a clash of all-powerful beings.

Kiyotaka isn’t known for powerful offensive cursed techniques. He excels more at defense, creating barriers and providing support. While helpful, his techniques aren’t particularly outstanding. His greatest strength, however, is his ability to stay calm and think strategically, making him a valuable leader and strategist for other sorcerers.

Yoshinobu Gakuganji

Yoshinobu Gakuganji, the principal of Kyoto Jujutsu High, is one of the oldest humans in Jujutsu Kaisen, but he’s still a powerful and capable fighter, able to compete with both spirits and younger sorcerers. He often contrasts with Gojo Satoru, embodying traditional jujutsu beliefs and methods, and he doesn’t usually see eye-to-eye with those who break the mold. More than any other sorcerer, Gakuganji firmly believes that Yuji Itadori should be executed to minimize the threat posed by Sukuna.

Even though Gakuganji hasn’t had a major role in the anime yet, he’s a key character in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, and he becomes even more important in upcoming storylines. If the show gets a third season, he’s likely to continue appearing.

Currently, Gakuganji hasn’t shown off many of his powers, which isn’t surprising considering he hasn’t been in many major battles yet. However, his cursed technique is very strong – he uses a guitar to turn sound waves into powerful attacks. It’s a pretty unique and impressive ability.

Utahime Iori

Utahime, the only other staff member at Kyoto Jujutsu High we’ve really met, often tries to act as an older sister or parent to the students, keeping them in line. However, she doesn’t always succeed. This is partly because many of her early scenes feature Gojo, who seems to know exactly how to push her buttons. Aside from those interactions, she generally appears as a capable and respected figure, though the series rarely gives her a chance to fully demonstrate her abilities.

Utahime briefly shines during the Kyoto Goodwill Event, but she has a limited role in the Shibuya Incident. Similar to most students from Kyoto Jujutsu High, she’s more of a supporting character, as her abilities are best used to help others rather than take center stage.

Utahime’s unique ability, Solo Forbidden Area, is incredibly valuable. It boosts the power of any sorcerer within its range, making her a strong support character. While this ability isn’t showcased much in the current story, it has great potential and hopefully will be featured more prominently if the anime continues with a third season.

Aoi Todo

Aoi Todo was first introduced in the first season of the anime. At 6’3″, he’s one of the tallest characters in the series. Right away, Todo comes across as a bit unusual. Despite being very physically imposing, he doesn’t seem scary at all, and his personality is actually quite similar to Itadori’s. He really enjoys fighting powerful opponents, and he’s a huge fan of an idol named Takada-chan.

Todo was a key player in the Jujutsu sorcerers’ win against the curses during the first season. With his unique personality and incredible power, he’s definitely a character to watch.

Todo’s Boogie Woogie is an impressive ability that allows him to teleport anyone within his reach. However, he needs to clap his hands to use it.

Mai Zenin

Mai Zenin is a second-year student at Kyoto Jujutsu High, and the twin sister of Maki Zenin. While they’re twins, Mai and Maki have very different personalities and often argued and competed with each other throughout the first season.

Mai and Maki both utilize cursed energy in battle, but they approach it differently. While Mai relies on her cursed energy, Maki compensates for her limited supply with impressive physical strength. Their personalities also contrast – Mai tends to be more reserved, whereas Maki is very proactive and forceful.

Mai Zenin isn’t as powerful as her sister, and doesn’t have particularly strong abilities of her own. Her main skill is creating things from scratch, called Construction, but currently she can only produce one bullet each day.

Momo Nishimiya

With her ability-powered broom, Momo has a classic witch aesthetic, and she’d fit right in with characters from series like Black Clover or Little Witch Academia.

She’s one of the most reserved characters in JJK, and she usually prefers to stay calm and think things through before acting.

Despite being only a sophomore, Kasumi often seems much older and responsible, like a young teacher. However, she’s a bit inexperienced and can be overly critical of herself.

Kasumi isn’t a particularly strong sorcerer on her own. She’s more of a support character, helping more powerful fighters. Her most effective ability is an anti-domain technique that automatically attacks anything that comes near it.

Kokichi Muta

Kokichi Muta is one of the saddest characters in Jujutsu Kaisen. He was born with a powerful curse called Heavenly Restriction, which left him bedridden and severely impacted his health. Unable to move, Kokichi pilots a mechanical body remotely, allowing him to connect with students from Kyoto Jujutsu High. Longing for a typical life, he tragically makes a deal with the villains Mahito and Kenjaku, ultimately betraying those he was supposed to protect.

Kokichi doesn’t come off as malicious, but rather as someone who deeply desires to fit in. He’s willing to go to great lengths to be accepted, and despite not appearing in many scenes, he’s one of the most compelling characters in the anime.

Ultimate Mechamaru is Kokichi’s most powerful ability – a versatile and strong cursed corpse he controls.

Many viewers first met him in the movie, where they witnessed his transformation from a shy individual into a confident and resolute sorcerer.

Yuta and the main character, Yuji, are both incredibly kind and will risk everything to protect those they care about. Through hard work and training, Yuta eventually gained full control over his cursed energy. In a fight, if Yuta has enough room and time, he can defeat his opponent very quickly.

Though not as strong as them, Shoko is a skilled healer and has become the main doctor for Jujutsu High.

Gojo’s backstory revealed Shoko as a bold and outspoken teenager, unafraid to point out flaws in even her strongest allies. Since then, she’s largely stayed behind the scenes, preferring to offer support rather than directly engage in battles. Despite her limited screen time – usually a few scenes per story arc – she always brings a lively and enjoyable energy to the series.

Shoko’s unique ability is Reverse Cursed Technique, which allows her to heal people by converting cursed energy into positive energy. Though others can use this technique, Shoko’s medical background lets her apply it more effectively than most.

Although it’s a bit underwhelming, Akari still serves a purpose in Jujutsu Kaisen. Anime like this often include relatable, everyday characters to contrast with the powerful sorcerers and villains. Compared to most students at Tokyo Jujutsu High, Akari isn’t particularly strong, but she’s determined to contribute what she can.

Even more gifted than Yuji, Hiromi isn’t just a fast learner—he’s a true prodigy who independently masters Cursed Techniques, developing powerful abilities linked to his Domain. While his powers are impressive and distinct, Hiromi’s real strength lies in his compelling story. His frustration with the Japanese legal system is one of the most believable motivations seen in the series, and he became a Sorcerer out of sheer desperation.

Higuruma’s primary ability is called Deadly Sentencing. When used, it immediately creates a special enclosed space resembling a courtroom. Inside, a ‘Judgeman’ will present evidence against the opponent, and based on this, a sentence is delivered – which could be death, but doesn’t always have to be.

Mahito

Mahito is a truly evil character determined to wipe out humanity. While he has several allies, he’s arguably the most ruthless among them. His terrifying ability, Idle Transfiguration, allows him to horribly distort the bodies of others.

Toji Fushiguro

Toji wasn’t a good father or a particularly decent person. He took jobs from questionable clients, prioritizing payment over morality. He was also incredibly arrogant, convinced he was unmatched in a fight. This overconfidence proved to be his downfall when he foolishly re-engaged Gojo Satoru instead of retreating. He lost their second fight, and it cost him his life.

Toji Fushiguro was an incredibly powerful fighter. Even though he wasn’t born with any cursed energy, he became well-known and feared in the jujutsu world. He was skilled with all types of weapons, making him a nearly unbeatable opponent.

Naoya Zenin

Naoya Zenin is arguably the most unlikeable character in Jujutsu Kaisen, and that’s notable given the many cruel villains in the show. What makes him so awful is that his negativity stems from very human flaws – he’s entitled, arrogant, prejudiced, and self-absorbed. We first meet him belittling his family while plotting to become head of the Zenin Clan, all while his father is dying nearby. He immediately tries to kill Yuji and Choso, and is obsessed with killing Megumi. He’s just a thoroughly unpleasant person.

To clarify, this isn’t meant as criticism. Naoya is a great villain in the story, and it makes sense he’ll likely be defeated by Megumi and Yuji. His actions aren’t simply about being conceited; they stem from how he was raised and the values of the Zenin Clan.

Naoya’s greatest strength is a technique called Projection Sorcery, inherited from his father. It appears like incredible speed, but it’s more about precognition. He essentially processes movements at 24 frames per second, letting him anticipate and plan his actions before opponents can respond, making him a formidable and dangerous opponent.

Tengen

Tengen plays a surprisingly complex role: he’s incredibly influential in the larger world, yet appears relatively briefly in the story itself. Despite limited screen time, he remains a captivating character.

I’m absolutely fascinated by Tengen’s Barrier! It’s this incredible protective shield around Jujutsu High, and honestly, it’s the main reason the school stays hidden from everyone else. It’s such a clever and powerful technique!

Hajime Kashimo

He’s obsessed with getting one specific fight: against Sukuna. Apparently, 400 years ago, Kashimo was considered the strongest sorcerer alive, but he got tired of easily defeating everyone. So, right before he was supposed to die, he made a deal with Kenjaku to be reborn during the Culling Game, all so he could finally face the most powerful spirit ever.

Kashimo is incredibly strong, and his cursed energy, which manifests as electricity, is particularly unusual. His special technique is a massive, all-or-nothing attack, making him one of the most dangerous fighters in the JJK universe. Beyond his power, the story explores the isolation that comes with being exceptionally strong. Kashimo finds it difficult to connect with others, leaving him feeling alienated and separate from the rest of humanity.

Kashimo’s strongest ability, Mythical Beast Amber, transforms his body into pure electricity. This lets him move incredibly fast – at the speed of light – and obliterate things with powerful, rapid energy waves. However, using this technique completely breaks down his body, meaning he can only use it once.
