Since the mid-1990s, Resident Evil has consistently been the most well-known name in survival horror games. Despite some highs and lows, Capcom’s series has always remained popular and sparked conversation. When it’s at its best, Resident Evil doesn’t just create incredible games—it actually helps define and change the horror genre. Even at its weakest, the series remains interesting, and sometimes even amusing. While not every Resident Evil game holds up today, each one has contributed to the franchise’s lasting impact.
With the release of Resident Evil Requiem bringing players back to Raccoon City, it’s a great moment to look back at the entire Resident Evil series. The main games in the franchise always create a big reaction – people either love them or hate them! While Requiem will eventually become part of gaming’s past, the Resident Evil series itself seems destined to continue indefinitely, and we’ll likely be talking about the tenth major installment before too long. Let’s take a look at all of the Resident Evil games that have been released.
Since games launch on different dates depending on the region and console, we’ll list the very first release date for each game, which is usually the Japanese release. We also won’t list updated versions like remasters, Director’s Cuts, or re-releases (such as Code Veronica X) as separate games.
The main Resident Evil games for consoles and PC will each have their own dedicated listing. Mobile games will be shown together in a separate chart. Pachinko games won’t be included.

Every Resident Evil Mobile Game
A Strange Range Of Resident Evil Games
Although best known for its console versions, Resident Evil has been on mobile devices for a long time. Between 2001 and 2013, Capcom released a new Resident Evil game for mobile almost every year, sometimes even multiple games. Unfortunately, most of these weren’t available outside of Japan, and they didn’t really leave a lasting mark on the series’ history or story. However, they could still be enjoyable to play.
Capcom launched Resident Evil Survival Unit in July 2025, marking the first new mobile game in the Resident Evil series in over a decade. Currently available on Android, the game has received a somewhat mixed response from players. It focuses on base-building and defending against other players, a surprising shift for the Resident Evil franchise.

Major Resident Evil Expansions
(Mostly) Great Additions To Great Games
For a long time, the Resident Evil series didn’t focus on expansions. This was mainly because, for the first fifteen years or so, the technology and market weren’t really there to support them. Starting in the 2010s, Capcom began releasing downloadable content (DLC) to keep games relevant for longer. Most recent Resident Evil titles, like Village and Revelations 2, have received updates and added content after launch, such as new modes or extra episodes. While these additions were welcome, they weren’t substantial expansions and are now often considered part of the core game experience.
In addition to smaller downloadable content, Resident Evil has released some significant expansions with substantial story additions, and dedicated fans will definitely want to experience them for the complete narrative. Resident Evil 4‘s “Separate Ways” is widely considered the best expansion the series has ever seen, but Village‘s “Shadows of Rose” is also excellent.

Resident Evil
Release Date: March 22, 1996
The original Resident Evil is famous for starting a hugely popular horror series and for helping create the survival horror genre. While many people fondly remember the first game, the remake is the best way to experience it today.
The mansion in the original Resident Evil is what many players remember most. It created a truly spooky and immersive atmosphere for its time, and still holds up today. Visually impressive for 1996, the mansion was packed with secrets and puzzles, making exploration exciting even with the dangers lurking inside. While groundbreaking for its era, the game’s mechanics – particularly the tank controls – feel dated to modern players, though they suit the game’s style. Although the 2002 remake is considered the definitive version, the original Resident Evil remains a fantastic experience.
What Resident Evil Is Known For
The original game established many of the defining features of the series, including its gameplay and common themes. It was particularly notable for its use of detailed, pre-rendered 2D environments combined with 3D characters viewed from fixed angles, which gave the game a cinematic feel. The atmosphere was heavily driven by music, and the experience focused on survival through careful resource management – players had limited ammo and needed to collect and combine items, all while solving puzzles. These elements combined to create a truly immersive and engaging horror experience.
Should You Play Resident Evil (1996)?
While it’s interesting to play as a piece of gaming history – and see where the Resident Evil franchise and modern horror games began – the original hasn’t held up over time. It was incredibly influential, but the 2002 remake is a much better experience now.
Resident Evil 2
Release Date: January 21, 1998
After the huge success of the first Resident Evil game, a sequel was quickly announced. Resident Evil 2 improved on the original’s strengths and was also very well-received. The game introduced iconic characters like Leon S. Kennedy and Ada Wong, and featured the terrifying Mr. X, who frightened players with his size and power in the late 1990s.
When it comes to the classic PlayStation Resident Evil games, many consider RE2 to be the strongest. It took the great concepts from the first game and improved on them, especially with the addition of multiple storylines and the terrifying Mr. X. While the 2019 remake is excellent and a great choice for new players, the original Resident Evil 2 still provides a genuinely frightening experience.
What Resident Evil 2 Is Known For
This game, like the original, uses static backgrounds and fixed camera angles, and players will need to manage limited resources like items and ammo. A key feature is the ability to play as either Leon or Claire through two different story paths. What happens in one character’s story can change things in the other, leading to up to four different ways to experience the game.
Should You Play Resident Evil 2 (1998)?
Yes, absolutely. Like the original Resident Evil 2, the game clearly shows its age, but it’s improved in almost every way and remains one of the best horror games of all time. The 2019 remake offers such a different experience that the original is still worth playing.
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
Release Date: September 22, 1999
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis continued the gameplay style of earlier games, still focusing on solving puzzles and using fixed camera views. It also increased the sense of horror with the addition of the terrifying Nemesis.
Both fans and critics loved Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, just like the first two games in the series. This led many to consider the early Resident Evil games one of the greatest trilogies in gaming history. While Resident Evil 3 feels a little faster-paced and less detailed than its predecessors, it began a move towards more action-focused gameplay that some players didn’t enjoy. Fortunately, a well-made remake of the game was released in 2020.
What Resident Evil 3: Nemesis Is Known For
The character Nemesis serves as a constant threat throughout the game. Jill Valentine is the primary playable character—with limited sections featuring Carlos Oliveira—and is relentlessly pursued by Nemesis as she navigates Raccoon City. While players will face Nemesis in specific, unavoidable battles, they can’t permanently defeat him during random encounters. Instead, players must use strategy and the environment to avoid or temporarily stop his attacks.
Should You Play Resident Evil 3: Nemesis?
Just like the original, the 2020 remake of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is distinct enough that it’s worth experiencing both versions. While you’ll always be aware you’re playing a game from the PlayStation 1 era, it remains one of the best horror titles on the platform.
Resident Evil Survivor
Release Date: January 27, 2000
Capcom often creates spin-off games based on its popular franchises, so it wasn’t unexpected that they branched out after the original trilogy proved so successful.
Resident Evil Survivor was a popular light gun shooter game internationally. Unfortunately, the North American version wasn’t well-received because the light gun feature – a key part of the gameplay – was disabled. As a result, the game has largely been forgotten and isn’t considered a standout title, even for fans of light gun games. Still, it can be a fun and unique experience if you happen to come across it.
What Resident Evil Survivor Is Known For
Unlike many light gun games of its era, like The House of the Dead, Survivor wasn’t completely fixed on a single path. Players could move around the environment while aiming and shooting with the light gun, and their choices actually affected how the story unfolded, creating a more dynamic experience.
Should You Play Resident Evil Survivor?
Okay, let’s be real – Resident Evil Survivor isn’t exactly a masterpiece, and I wouldn’t recommend it to just anyone. But as a big fan of the series, I figured I had to try it. It’s thankfully pretty short and actually playable, so if you’re a die-hard like me, it’s worth a single playthrough just to say you’ve done it.
Resident Evil – Code: Veronica
Release Date: March 28, 2000
Originally released in Japan on March 22, 2001, for Dreamcast and PlayStation 2, Code: Veronica X later became available on the GameCube in 2003. An updated version then launched for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in September 2011.
Resident Evil – Code: Veronica was the first game in the series to appear on a console that wasn’t the PlayStation 1. It originally came out for the Dreamcast, and later became available on the PlayStation 2 in 2001. After that, it was also released on GameCube, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.
Today, Resident Evil – Code: Veronica is celebrated for its impressive graphics and movie-like cutscenes, which set a new standard for both the Resident Evil series and video games as a whole. It’s still considered a peak entry in the franchise, and fans have been requesting a complete remake since the late 2010s.
What Resident Evil – Code: Veronica Is Known For
This game was the first in the series to experiment with 3D backgrounds, though the camera still moved between fixed viewpoints. It borrowed gameplay features from both Resident Evil 3, like the quick 180-degree turns and explosive oil drums, and Resident Evil 2, including side packs and handgun upgrades. While three characters are playable, the game largely guides players through sections controlling Claire Redfield, Steve Burnside, and Chris Redfield in that order.
Should You Play Resident Evil – Code: Veronica?
While the original is good, I recommend playing Code Veronica X instead. It includes extra cutscenes and has some minor improvements to the overall presentation, making it a slightly better experience.
Resident Evil Survivor 2 – Code: Veronica
Release Date (Consoles): November 8, 2001
Originally appearing in Japanese arcades in June 2001, Resident Evil Survivor 2 – Code: Veronica was later released on PlayStation 2 in Japan that same year. It came to Europe in 2002, but wasn’t released in North America because the first Survivor game hadn’t been well-received. The game follows Claire Redfield as she searches for her brother Chris in Raccoon City. Players can also control Steve Burnside, but the game’s story is largely separate from the main Resident Evil storyline, beyond sharing some characters.
To be frank, Survivor 2 isn’t a very good Resident Evil game, and it was one of the first indications that Capcom was releasing too many games in the series. It doesn’t add much to the overall story, so it’s not really worth playing.
What Resident Evil Survivor 2 – Code: Veronica Is Known For
Okay, so the graphics aren’t amazing, but honestly, the way this game plays feels a lot like a fast-paced first-person shooter. There’s this constant pressure because you’re racing against the clock to finish each level and find the exit. If you run out of time, that’s when the really tough enemy, Nemesis, shows up – and you definitely don’t want that to happen!
Should You Play Resident Evil Survivor 2 – Code: Veronica?
Like the original, Resident Evil Survivor 2 – Code: Veronica isn’t essential, and you won’t be missing much if you skip it. However, it’s a solid light gun game and looks pretty good on the PS2. It’s not worth a special trip to buy, but it’s worth trying if you come across it.
Resident Evil Gaiden
Release Date:December 14, 2001
Resident Evil Gaiden was a Game Boy Color exclusive title that stood out from other Resident Evil games. Instead of the usual third-person view, it used a top-down perspective and featured a distinctive combat system. When encountering enemies, the game switched to a first-person view, requiring players to time their shots accurately in a quick mini-game.
Fans and critics didn’t like the game very much, mainly because the puzzles were boring and lacked creativity. However, it’s still a decent Resident Evil game for the Game Boy Color, especially considering the system wasn’t really known for horror games.
What Resident Evil Gaiden Is Known For
This game, originally made for the Game Boy Color, plays like a classic RPG. You control characters as 2D sprites moving through 2D worlds. What’s unique is the battle system: it switches to a first-person view where you aim a cursor to hit enemies, requiring precise timing.
Should You Play Resident Evil Gaiden?
To be honest, no, it’s not a great game. If someone is really determined to play a Resident Evil title on the Game Boy Color, this will do, but Gaiden doesn’t really stand out in any particular area.
Resident Evil (2002 Remake)
Release Date: March 22, 2002
Resident Evil (2002) received an HD remaster on November 27, 2014.
The original Resident Evil was initially released for the GameCube in 2002. Since then, it’s been updated with improved graphics for newer consoles, making the game accessible to a wider audience. This allows players to experience the roots of the Resident Evil series, learn about the iconic characters, and understand the genre before diving into the more recent, action-packed installments.
When I replayed the Resident Evil remake, what I really appreciated was that the developers didn’t mess with the core of what made the original so great. They didn’t try to ‘fix’ things that were already awesome, but instead just updated the graphics and controls to make it feel modern. It was a fantastic way to breathe new life into a classic!
What Resident Evil (2002 Remake) Is Known For
This game marks Capcom’s first full remake within the series, featuring significantly updated graphics and completely reworked gameplay. A key new feature is the ability to quickly turn 180 degrees, and players can now use it as a defensive move to break free from enemy attacks. The puzzles have also been redesigned, encouraging players to revisit and explore the mansion again.
Should You Play Resident Evil (2002)?
Absolutely! The 2002 remake is a strong contender for the best Resident Evil game ever made, and it’s a perfect example of how to create a truly terrifying survival horror experience.
Resident Evil Zero
Release Date: November 12, 2002
When Resident Evil Zero first came out, it sparked a lot of debate among fans. The game, released on GameCube, greatly improved the graphics and overall feel compared to earlier Resident Evil titles, while still maintaining the familiar gameplay that some players appreciated.
Honestly, a lot of us were pretty bummed out with the game. We were hoping that, since it was built for the new consoles, it would really shake things up and be a huge leap forward from what we were used to. It just didn’t feel like enough had changed, and that was a letdown.
What Resident Evil Zero Is Known For
Okay, so the game now has this cool “partner zapping” feature. Basically, I can play as either Rebecca Chambers or Billy Coen whenever I want throughout the whole story! I can directly control one of them, and the other will either follow me around as an AI partner, or I can switch who I’m controlling. It’s a big deal for the puzzles, because a lot of them need both of us to do things at the same time to actually solve them. It adds a whole new layer to how I approach everything.
Should You Play Resident Evil Zero?
While not everyone loves it as much as the very first Resident Evil games, Resident Evil Zero is still an important part of the series. It’s best to play the remastered HD version.
Resident Evil: Dead Aim
Release Date: February 13, 2003
As you might expect from the title, Resident Evil: Dead Aim is another solid light gun shooting game. While it didn’t receive much praise in North America upon release, it still offers an enjoyable experience.
Fans often remember Resident Evil: Dead Aim as one of the first games in the early Resident Evil series to let players move while aiming – a feature that wasn’t common in the games until much later.
What Resident Evil: Dead Aim Is Known For
This game is Capcom’s latest effort in the Gun Survivor series, designed to be played with Namco’s light gun controllers. Players generally explore from a third-person view, but the perspective shifts to first-person during combat.
Should You Play Resident Evil: Dead Aim?
Absolutely, play Dead Aim! Compared to the Survivor games, it’s a much better light gun shooter. If you know what to expect, Dead Aim is a really enjoyable experience.
Resident Evil Outbreak
Release Date: December 11, 2003
Resident Evil Outbreak stands out in the Resident Evil series because it was the first game to let players team up in co-op and experience the horror together online. This fulfilled a long-held wish among fans and paved the way for similar features in later games.
Resident Evil Outbreak provided a lot of replayability with its eight characters and five different scenarios. However, the game’s challenging controls might make those scenarios difficult for some players.
What Resident Evil Outbreak Is Known For
This game marks the beginning of a series where players can control multiple characters, each with their own story and path through Umbrella City. There are five different scenarios to play through, and players can choose their preferred character and difficulty level. The difficulty setting affects the types of items and enemies you’ll face during gameplay.
Should You Play Resident Evil Outbreak?
Playing Outbreak (and its sequel) alone is a surprisingly good survival horror experience, and it doesn’t get the recognition it deserves within the Capcom series. However, it truly shines when you can team up with others through online fan communities, making it a genuinely fantastic game.
Resident Evil Outbreak: File #2
Release Date: September 9, 2004
Resident Evil Outbreak: File #2 is an expansion to the original Resident Evil Outbreak. It didn’t change much of the gameplay, and playing with the computer-controlled partners was frustrating unless you had a friend to play with and communicate with.
While not widely known, Outbreak: File #2 has an interesting idea, but falls short in execution, particularly as a cooperative action game. It has potential, but doesn’t quite deliver a fully satisfying experience.
What Resident Evil Outbreak: File #2 Is Known For
While this game follows a similar pattern to the original, it features significantly better controls and abilities. Players can now move and shoot at the same time, and even pick up items while crawling. The game also introduces new features that enhance online play, letting players use the same character style when teaming up with others.
Should You Play Resident Evil Outbreak: File #2?
Ditto.
Resident Evil 4
Release Date: January 11, 2005
Resident Evil 4 was originally remastered in HD and released on September 8, 2011. A virtual reality version then became available for Meta Quest devices on October 21, 2021.
Resident Evil 4 is often considered one of the best games in the Resident Evil series. It’s known for its exciting action and nostalgic feel from the early 2000s, and follows Leon Kennedy as he investigates the disappearance of the U.S. President’s daughter and faces a terrifying new threat.
Capcom took feedback from players of Resident Evil Zero to heart and made significant changes with Resident Evil 4. The most noticeable change was shifting to an over-the-shoulder camera angle. Combined with fantastic shooting, a well-balanced pace, diverse enemies, and plenty to do, Resident Evil 4 quickly became a beloved classic.
What Resident Evil 4 Is Known For
This game marked a shift for the series with its new over-the-shoulder perspective and faster, more action-oriented gameplay. Combat is quicker and more frequent, and the game became known for its quick-time events. Players can upgrade Leon Kennedy’s weapons and customize his loadout to suit different situations. The introduction of Ashley Graham is often remembered for making the game feel like an escort mission. Although she’s vulnerable, players can give Ashley instructions and even guide her through a stealth section.
Should You Play Resident Evil 4 (2005)?
Duh.
Resident Evil: Deadly Silence
Release Date: January 19, 2006
Often overlooked, Resident Evil: Deadly Silence was a Nintendo DS game created to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the original Resident Evil from 1996.
Capcom didn’t just quickly re-release the game; they put effort into making Deadly Silence a great experience on its own. The game cleverly uses the DS stylus and touch screen in battles. Besides the original story, Deadly Silence features a new mode with redesigned puzzles and more enemies to challenge players.
What Resident Evil: Deadly Silence Is Known For
Despite being somewhat forgotten today, Deadly Silence is likely the strongest adaptation of the original 1996 Resident Evil, excluding the 2002 remake. If you own a DS and are looking for a classic horror game, this is an excellent choice – you’d be hard-pressed to find a better one, unless you have a 3DS.
Should You Play Resident Evil: Deadly Silence?
Although the first Resident Evil game is a timeless classic, Deadly Silence is the most complete and polished version of the experience.
Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles
Release Date:November 13, 2007
After the huge success of Resident Evil 4, excitement for Resident Evil 5 was incredibly high. However, Capcom didn’t immediately release the sequel. Instead, they launched a different, on-rails shooting game. While this could have diminished fan enthusiasm, releasing it on the Nintendo Wii actually made it a surprisingly popular addition to the series.
The Umbrella Chronicles used the Wii’s motion controls to make players feel like they were really in the game. Although on-rail shooters aren’t usually very popular now, this game still offered fun for those who enjoyed accurate shooting and quick reactions, all within the world of Resident Evil.
What Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles Is Known For
Like many rail shooter games, this one guides players along a fixed path, requiring them to aim and shoot enemies. However, it sets itself apart by letting players use close-combat weapons from a third-person perspective and participate in quick-time events.
Should You Play Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles?
I really enjoyed playing both of the Chronicles games! They’re not groundbreaking or anything, but they’re a lot of fun as on-rails shooters, and they actually helped me understand the story a little better. They’re just good, lighthearted entertainment.
Resident Evil 5
Release Date:March 5, 2009
After a nearly five-year wait following the last main game, this highly anticipated release in the 2000s shook things up with new settings, boss battles, and ways to play with friends.
The game struggled to live up to the high hopes surrounding it, largely because it tried to do too much. However, after the initial letdown, Resident Evil 5 was seen as a good action game and a worthy, though somewhat over-the-top and cheesy, sequel to RE4.
What Resident Evil 5 Is Known For
This game plays like Resident Evil 4, offering a similar over-the-shoulder perspective, but with a new addition: a partner. Players are joined by either an AI companion or another player controlling Sheva Alomar. What sets this game apart is how much you rely on your partner. When you reach a critical ‘Dying Stage,’ you need their help to recover – otherwise, it’s game over.
Should You Play Resident Evil 5?
If you’re okay with the Resident Evil series leaning heavily into action, Resident Evil 5 is a game you should try. It’s especially fun with a friend in co-op mode, making it a strong recommendation.
Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles
Release Date:November 17, 2009
After the success of Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles on the Nintendo Wii, another on-rail shooter was released. Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles played similarly to its predecessor, but stood out for its story which connected to the events of Resident Evil 4.
Players loved the exciting, motion-based gameplay of the Nintendo Wii, and they also appreciated learning more about characters they already knew and loved – who doesn’t enjoy playing as Leon in Resident Evil?
What Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles Is Known For
As a Wii game, it’s an on-rails shooter that allows for local co-op play. While very similar to Umbrella Chronicles, Darkside introduces a few gameplay tweaks. These include manually equipping grenades, earning more points for perfect headshots on weakened enemies, and getting extra coins by shooting coins while they’re in the air.
Should You Play Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles?
Same as The Umbrella Chronicles.
Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D
Release Date:June 2, 2011
Similar to other games, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D builds upon the popular Mercenaries mini-game first found in Resident Evil 4. This expanded version becomes available after completing the main game storyline.
While Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D didn’t appeal to everyone, it was a really enjoyable and exciting experience for those who loved the Mercenaries minigame, and it still is today.
What Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D Is Known For
This 3DS game skips a traditional story mode and focuses entirely on a Mercenaries-style experience. It features a third-person perspective and fully 3D levels. Before each match, players can customize their gear, and the goal is to score as many points as possible within a set time limit.
Should You Play Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D?
If you love mercenaries, definitely play this.
Resident Evil: Revelations
Release Date:January 26, 2012
Originally a Nintendo 3DS exclusive, Resident Evil: Revelations was later released on many other consoles. The game’s story takes place between Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5, and it features the same fast-paced action and over-the-shoulder camera angle as those titles.
The game could be played alone or with a friend. The multiplayer mode wasn’t just a copy of the single-player game; it had been specially changed to be more fun for two players.
What Resident Evil: Revelations Is Known For
The game features standard third-person movement, but switches to a first-person view during combat. Instead of traditional health bars, the game shows how close you are to dying through blood splatter effects. A new bio-scanner, called Genesis, helps players find hidden enemies and items, and might even let them create vaccines from collected herbs. Players can now swim, but they’re defenseless while underwater, making them vulnerable to enemies that can also navigate the water.
Should You Play Resident Evil: Revelations?
I’m a big fan, and honestly, while Revelations was amazing on the 3DS, the versions on other consoles are just… decent. It’s important to go in with reasonable expectations, because it doesn’t quite live up to the original on the 3DS, in my opinion.
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City
Release Date: March 20, 2012
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City revisits the time between Resident Evil 2 and 3. The game offers a full single-player story, as well as four-player co-op and online multiplayer options.
Operation Raccoon City didn’t live up to expectations for the Resident Evil series. While it offered four-player co-op and online multiplayer, the gameplay felt weak compared to other games, and it didn’t quite fit with the established story and how the game was supposed to work.
What Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City Is Known For
For the first time, this game series introduces multiplayer, letting players battle in teams of four. It’s an action-packed shooter where you’ll fight both zombies and opposing players, utilizing unique weapons and abilities. The single-player campaign lets you dramatically alter the series’ storyline – you can even eliminate iconic characters like Leon, Claire, and Jill. In multiplayer, teams can compete for points, engage in classic team deathmatches, or fight to be the last team to escape in a thrilling final battle for the last helicopter.
Should You Play Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City?
No. Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City just isn’t fun, and not even co-op really saves it.
Resident Evil 6
Release Date:October 2, 2012
Resident Evil 6 continued the shift towards action-packed gameplay seen in Resident Evil 4, but it went too far. The game’s focus on action over horror proved unpopular, leading the series to pause and rethink its balance between combat and scares.
While Resident Evil 6 isn’t a terrible game, it strayed from the elements that originally made the Resident Evil series so popular, which disappointed many long-time fans. If you approach it without expecting a traditional Resident Evil experience, it can be a fun action game to play with friends, though it’s not particularly scary.
What Resident Evil 6 Is Known For
Resident Evil 6 draws inspiration from the franchise’s action-packed titles, but it also offers three unique campaigns where you control two different characters. The game adds a new dodging system that lets you avoid attacks without relying on timed button presses. You can also quickly fire your weapon by using stamina, and a counter-attack move allows you to strike back at enemies, creating openings for further attacks.
Should You Play Resident Evil 6?
I actually enjoy Resident Evil 6, but I approached it knowing it wouldn’t be scary. I expected a big, over-the-top action movie, and that’s exactly what it delivered. If you’re looking for pure action and excitement, RE6 is a lot of fun and gives you plenty of gameplay for your money.
Resident Evil: Revelations 2
Release Date: February 24, 2015
The follow-up to Revelations was first released in episodes, taking advantage of the popular trend at the time. The first episode came out in February 2015, but players didn’t see how the story ended until mid-March. This meant they had to wait for a complete retail version to experience the full narrative, which takes place between Resident Evil 5 and 6 and stars Claire Redfield.
Resident Evil: Revelations 2 was well-received for its compelling story, memorable characters, and the ability to play with a friend. However, some players found the dialogue a bit silly and the plot twists overly dramatic – qualities that have become common in the Resident Evil series over time.
What Resident Evil: Revelations 2 Is Known For
Resident Evil: Revelations 2 marked a return to the series’ survival horror roots, emphasizing stealth and careful resource management. The game features cooperative play, letting players switch between controlling two characters to solve puzzles and overcome obstacles. It also brings back the Raid Mode minigame, this time with a new story where you play as an AI that can transform into different characters within a combat simulation.
Should You Play Resident Evil: Revelations 2?
Yes, particularly in co-op.
Umbrella Corps
Release Date: June 21, 2016
It’s probably fortunate that Umbrella Corps isn’t officially called a Resident Evil game, because it was widely disliked by both fans and critics. It didn’t live up to the quality of other games in the series and temporarily damaged the franchise’s reputation.
A multiplayer shooter based on Resident Evil initially generated excitement, but the final product disappointed. Trying to follow current gaming trends resulted in unattractive graphics and clunky controls, ultimately harming the reputation of the series.
What Umbrella Corps Is Known For
This game differs from previous titles in the series by emphasizing close-quarters combat. It’s more tactical, allowing players to wield firearms while performing actions like opening doors, using shields, and climbing. New gadgets also help players eliminate zombies more effectively, including an improved ice ax, a shield that can deflect bullets and slow enemies with resin, boots that deliver more powerful kicks, and a jammer to disrupt zombie attacks.
Should You Play Umbrella Corps?
No. I love AA experiments, but Umbrella Corps is just soulless.
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
Release Date: January 24, 2017
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard dramatically refreshed the long-running series. For the first time, players experienced the game through the eyes of a new protagonist, and in a first-person perspective. This installment brought horror back to the forefront, with a terrifying scenario – being trapped in a house with mutated, dangerous inhabitants – that appealed to both longtime fans and newcomers.
This new approach revitalized the Resident Evil series. By moving away from previous storylines, the game became a great starting point for newcomers eager to jump into the action.
What Resident Evil 7: Biohazard Is Known For
This game offers a truly immersive, first-person perspective on the classic Resident Evil experience, bringing the series back to its terrifying survival horror origins. You can run continuously, and combat is more versatile with separate controls for hip-fire, aiming, and both ranged and close-quarters attacks. Precise movement is also possible thanks to dedicated buttons for guarding and crouching.
Should You Play Resident Evil 7?
Definitely, and it is even a good starting point for new players or folks who skipped RE5 and 6.
Resident Evil 2 (2019 Remake)
Release Date: January 25, 2019
After nearly 20 years, a remake of Resident Evil 2 finally arrived, following the remake of the first Resident Evil game. The wait proved worthwhile, as the 2019 remake exceeded expectations and became a standout title of the year, earning the prestigious Ultimate Game of the Year award from the Golden Joystick Awards.
The remake of Resident Evil 2 didn’t just improve the graphics and technology; it also completely revamped how the game plays, giving it a fresh feel. Changes like this can be risky in remakes, but fans generally loved the new over-the-shoulder camera angle.
What Resident Evil 2 (2019 Remake) Is Known For
This game is a fresh take on the original, famous for its smooth, uninterrupted gameplay – you won’t see any loading screens! Built with the same technology as Resident Evil 7, the remake features significantly improved and more realistic graphics. Players have full movement control, allowing them to run and shoot in any direction. You can also expand your inventory with Hip Pouches and board up windows with wooden planks. While these planks can’t be replaced once used, they can make certain areas much safer to navigate. Combat has also been updated with defensive options, letting you break free from enemy grabs.
Should You Play Resident Evil 2 (2019)?
Absolutely. Aside from possibly Requiem, the Resident Evil 2 remake is the best third-person horror game in the series.
Resident Evil 3 (2020 Remake)
Release Date: April 3, 2020
After the highly successful remake of Resident Evil 2, Capcom started working on a remake of the third game. However, it wasn’t as well-received as the second, mainly because players felt it was too short and the character Nemesis wasn’t used to his full potential.
Now that some time has passed, people are starting to appreciate the Resident Evil 3 remake more. While it isn’t quite as good as the Resident Evil 2 remake, it’s still a fun game for fans of that title. It could have been even better if the developers had taken more risks and made bigger changes to the original.
What Resident Evil 3 (2020 Remake) Is Known For
The relentless Nemesis is a persistent threat throughout the game, but players can now improve Jill’s weapons more easily through a shop system. Jill can dodge attacks quickly, though the effectiveness of consecutive dodges decreases with each use. Precise aiming is possible with a bullet-time mode activated by pressing the aim button at the right moment. The game also brings back quick-time events, requiring players to press buttons to reduce the damage Jill takes.
Should You Play Resident Evil 3 (2020)?
Yeah, why not? It is decent as an extension of RE2.
Resident Evil: Resistance
Release Date:April 3, 2020
Resident Evil: Resistance was a multiplayer game included with the Resident Evil 3 remake. It featured a unique premise where four survivors tried to escape while one player, the mastermind, worked to stop them using traps and monsters.
The game wasn’t very popular and didn’t attract many players. However, if you’re interested in Resident Evil: Resistance, it’s worth trying with friends – it can be a lot of fun when played with a good group.
What Resident Evil: Resistance Is Known For
This installment marked the first time the series experimented with a 4-versus-1 format. In this game type, a team of Survivors must work together to escape a dangerous location filled with puzzles and traps set by another player, known as the Mastermind. Each Survivor has unique abilities to help overcome obstacles, while the Mastermind can hinder their progress by summoning zombies, strengthening defenses, and creating hazards.
Should You Play Resident Evil: Resistance?
Right now, new players would be quickly defeated by those with much more experience. It’s just too difficult for beginners to compete at this stage.
Resident Evil Village
Release Date: May 7, 2021
As a horror fan, I was super hyped for Resident Evil Village, and it totally delivered! It takes everything Resident Evil 7: Biohazard did right and expands on it. Seriously, the villains in this game are both creepy and memorable, and the environments are some of the most immersive and atmospheric I’ve ever experienced in a Resident Evil game.
While Resident Evil Village might not be among the very best in the Resident Evil series, it still delivers a strong and enjoyable single-player experience – something that’s increasingly rare in modern games. Though some fans may prefer the stories of characters like Chris and Leon, Village offers a compelling campaign of its own.
What Resident Evil Village Is Known For
Originally, Village could only be played from a first-person perspective, but downloadable content added a third-person option. Players can block attacks to lessen damage and even push enemies back. Like Resident Evil 7, the game is slower-paced, with scarce ammo and tough enemies, which means players need to carefully manage their resources and use guns strategically.
Should You Play Resident Evil Village?
Though not as universally loved as Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil Village is still a fantastic game. Just be prepared for a more action-packed experience with horror thrown in.
Resident Evil Re:Verse
Release Date: October 27, 2022
Re:Verse received a lot of criticism upon release. It’s an arena shooter with a Resident Evil theme, but many players found it didn’t live up to other games in the Resident Evil series, especially as an asymmetrical horror experience. Common complaints included unfair gameplay, excessive in-game purchases, and overall inconsistent quality.
Despite its flaws, the game offers a fun and unique experience, letting you play as different Resident Evil characters and even as the monstrous Bioweapons themselves. It also has a cool mechanic where humans transform into monsters when they die. Since this game started as extra content for Resident Evil Village, it’s likely Capcom will continue to improve it with updates and patches.
What Resident Evil Re:Verse Is Known For
This game is a fast-action arena where players battle as characters from the Resident Evil universe. Matches are quick, deathmatch-style fights where each character has unique weapons and abilities. Players earn points by completing objectives and getting kills – with bonus points for kill streaks and taking down top players. When defeated, players temporarily transform into a powerful bioweapon before respawning as a human. They can use virus capsules to enhance their zombie form. Winning matches earns RE Coins, which can be spent on special upgrades.
Should You Play Resident Evil Re:Verse?
Capcom shut down Re:Verse in 2025 for a reason.
Resident Evil 4 (2023 Remake)
Release Date: March 24, 2023
After the successful remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, many fans predicted a remake of the highly praised Resident Evil 4. Some questioned the need for a remake, feeling the original game was still excellent. However, Capcom has delivered a fantastic remake that exceeds expectations and has won over even the most doubtful players, despite the original game remaining enjoyable.
This remake modernizes the gameplay by removing older, clunkier controls. It also gives the game a stunning visual overhaul, making it darker and more atmospheric than before. The impressive lighting and effects really enhance the game’s already creepy feel. It all runs beautifully on the ‘RE Engine’ – the same technology that powered RE7 – making this a visually striking experience.
Staying true to current gaming trends, Capcom has introduced new side quests through the Merchant. The game also features updated mechanics like stealth, parrying, and aiming while moving, all of which make gameplay faster and more enjoyable. Even with these improvements, the game still delivers the same challenging experience fans expect.
What Resident Evil 4 (2023 Remake) Is Known For
Instead of quick-time events, the game now features dodging and blocking, giving players more control over avoiding attacks. Shooting enemies in specific body parts still staggers them, just like before. Ashley is different this time – she doesn’t have a health bar and simply falls when hit, needing your help to get back up. This is a great improvement, as it makes her feel like a true companion you need to protect, rather than someone you constantly have to babysit.
Should You Play Resident Evil 4 (2023)?
Duh.
Resident Evil Requiem
Release Date: February 27, 2026
The highly anticipated Resident Evil Requiem is now available on PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC! Both longtime fans and new players can experience the newest installment in Capcom’s iconic series. Requiem marks a fresh start for the franchise while also honoring its history, and it strikes an impressive balance between horror and action – truly delivering on both fronts. Beyond the story, the game’s biggest feature is its innovative perspective system, letting players switch between first- and third-person views. It’s recommended to play Grace Ashcroft’s sections in first-person for a more intense horror experience, and Leon’s sections in third-person to focus on the action. However, you’re free to play the entire game from whichever perspective you prefer.
Grace and Leon are the main characters in Requiem, though Grace is the primary focus. Like the player character in Resident Evil 7, Grace is vulnerable and not a skilled fighter. Despite being an FBI agent, she’s an analyst without field experience, which is clear in how she acts. Investigating a series of murders linked to Raccoon City quickly throws her into a dangerous situation she’s unprepared for, and she doesn’t try to hide her fear. She’s also spent much of her life avoiding past trauma. Some longtime fans might not connect with Grace, as she’s very different from the usual Resident Evil heroes like Claire and Jill, lacking their confidence and composure.
Leon is at his best in RE Requiem, a seasoned and world-weary character who’s seen it all. He’s always a pleasure to watch, and this installment features what is likely the most rewarding combat the series has ever offered – every shot feels impactful. While his story isn’t as central or compelling as Grace’s, Leon provides a welcome dose of nostalgia throughout the game. It’s a really enjoyable experience.
What Will Resident Evil Requiem Be Known For?
It’s still too soon to know exactly how Resident Evil Requiem will be remembered. It could be known for introducing the character Grace, especially if she appears in future games. Or it could be remembered for its setting in 2030, if the series continues to use that timeline. But right now, it seems Requiem will be most notable for how it told the story from two different points of view. This was a bold choice by Capcom, but they pulled it off really well, and it’s likely we’ll see them use this technique again in future games.
Should You Play Resident Evil Requiem?
Definitely.
Resident Evil Games In Chronological Order
Best Order For A Chronological Playthrough
Generally, the best way to play the Resident Evil games is in the order they were released, but with the remakes replacing the older versions. However, if you’re completely new to the series and want to understand the entire story – even the wild parts – playing the games in chronological order can be a good option. Luckily, Capcom has remastered many of the key games, making a chronological playthrough much more manageable.
If you want to experience the series in the order the story actually happens, you’ll need to rearrange the games and skip a couple that aren’t considered official or aren’t quite reliable. Here’s the order I recommend for a mostly chronological playthrough, though other orders can work too.
- Resident Evil 0: HD Remaster
- Resident Evil (2002)
- Resident Evil 2 (2019)
- Resident Evil: Outbreak (Both Games)
- Resident Evil 3 (2020)
- Operation Raccoon City
- Resident Evil Survivor
- Resident Evil – Code: Veronica X
- Resident Evil: Dead Aim
- Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles
- Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles
- Resident Evil 4 (2005)
- Resident Evil: Revelations
- Resident Evil 5 HD
- Resident Evil: Revelations 2
- Resident Evil 6 HD
- Umbrella Corps
- Resident Evil 7
- Resident Evil Village
- Resident Evil Requiem
I highly recommend playing the games listed in bold. The other games are okay, but they’re not essential and can be difficult to find or fully enjoy today. You won’t miss out on much if you skip them.
