As a devoted Pokémon gamer, I’ve been thrilled since the introduction of Mega Evolution in Pokémon X and Y back in 2013. The Pokémon franchise has consistently unveiled new temporary transformations and abilities with each subsequent generation, from Z-Moves in Sun and Moon to Dynamaxing and Gigantamaxing in Sword and Shield, and now Terastallization in Scarlet and Violet.
While many of these game-changing mechanics have stayed within their original titles, Mega Evolution, Dynamaxing, and Gigantamaxing have gradually found their way into Pokémon GO. Yet, not all Gigantamax forms have made it to Pokémon GO as of yet, even though Sword and Shield are approaching its sixth anniversary.
Pokemon’s Gigantamax Transformations Explained
As a gamer diving into the world of Pokémon Sword and Shield, I’ve discovered an exciting feature called Dynamaxing. This is when my trusty Pokémon temporarily transforms into a colossal form! However, it’s not something that can be done anytime, anywhere – it’s more like Mega Evolution or Z-Moves. Instead, there are special places where I can unleash the Dynamax power, such as in Pokémon Gym Stadiums, Battle Towers, and specific Pokémon Dens. It adds a whole new level of strategy to my battles!
In general, when a Pokemon is Dynamaxed, it expands to an enormous size while maintaining its original appearance, but it gains the capacity to perform potent Max Moves for a short period. These large Dynamax Pokemon can sometimes be found and battled in Max Raid Battles within the Pokemon Den, requiring collaboration from four trainers to defeat them. Remarkably, if successful, these wild Dynamax Pokemon can be captured after being defeated.
In addition to the regular Dynamax transformations, certain unique Pokemon are capable of undergoing a special form of Dynamax called Gigantamaxing. Unlike typical Dynamax where they merely expand to colossal sizes, Pokemon that can Gigantamax will undergo a transformation in their appearance and receive the ability to use potent G-Max Moves. For instance, the Fairy type Cream Pokemon Alcremie will become an enormous cake when Gigantamaxed and have access to the G-Max Move G-Max Finale. Apart from Gigantamax Alcremie, only 31 other Pokemon are capable of Gigantamaxing. These include:
- Gigantamax Charizard
- Gigantamax Butterfree
- Gigantamax Pikachu

Pokemon GO’s Roster of Gigantamax Pokemon
In September 2024, the concept of Dynamaxing was introduced for the first time within Pokemon GO. The bigger version of this feature, Gigantamaxing, became available in October 2024, also within the mobile game. In Pokemon GO, only certain Pokemons can perform Dynamax or Gigantamax transformations, and these encounters happen exclusively during Max Battles at randomly appearing Power Spots scattered around the world. However, each Power Spot can only be interacted with once a day. Currently, 67 Pokemons are capable of Dynamaxing, while there are only 12 Gigantamax forms featured in Pokemon GO, meaning that 20 more Gigantamax forms remain unavailable for players to encounter.

Pokemon GO will add Gigantamax Butterfree on August 3.
Due to the recent emphasis of the Pokemon series on Mega Evolution, following its reintroduction in the upcoming game Pokemon Legends: Z-A, it seems that adding all Dynamax and Gigantamax forms to Pokemon GO may take some time. Although Mega Evolution was introduced in Pokemon GO in 2020, Niantic has yet to incorporate every Mega Evolution form into the game. At present, Mega Mewtwo X, Mega Mewtwo Y, Mega Sharpedo, Mega Camerupt, and Mega Metagross remain unavailable. It appears that the developers are more inclined to prioritize adding the remaining Mega Evolutions and new ones from Z-A, such as Mega Dragonite, over the other Gigantamax forms for now. With Mega Evolution back in the limelight, it’s expected that future attention will be focused on implementing more of these transformations.
