As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the latest update for Balatro, dubbed “Friends of Jimbo,” has truly caught my attention. The crossovers with The Witcher 3, Among Us, Vampire Survivors, and Dave the Diver have added a fresh layer of excitement to this already engaging roguelike card game.

To commemorate reaching 2 million units sold, the creator of Balatro, LocalThunk, posted an update on the Steam page for the roguelike card game at the beginning of August. To signify this significant milestone, LocalThunk announced that there would be three major announcements throughout Summer, with the first being that a substantial gameplay update for Balatro is planned for 2025. Now, LocalThunk has unveiled the second major announcement for Balatro this summer, and it’s set an exceptionally high standard for the upcoming third reveal.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that during the latest Nintendo Direct, a fresh update for everyone’s favorite game, Balatro, titled “Friends of Jimbo,” was unveiled! Right now, this update is available for free and it’s packed with more than just a couple surprises. In fact, there are four incredible crossovers with renowned gaming franchises! These crossover packs not only transform the look of Balatro‘s face cards but also introduce new animations to the game. Best of all, you can enjoy this cross-platform fun without spending an extra penny!

Every Crossover Balatro’s Friend of Jimbo Update Adds to The Game

The Witcher 3

A game that really needs no introduction, The Witcher 3 is still widely considered to be one of the greatest action-RPGs ever made, and somehow, it’s barely aged a day over the last nine years. With a fairly popular Netflix show now under the franchise’s belt as well, The Witcher‘s characters are known far and wide, making their appearance in Balatro all the more impressive. Geralt of Rivia, Yennefer, and Jaskier/Dandelion appear as the King, Queen, and Jack cards respectively.

Among Us

As an avid gamer, I’m thrilled that one of the standout Indie games of late, Among Us, has now made its way onto Balatro in their recent “Friends of Jimbo” update. This exciting collaboration transforms Balatro’s King, Queen, and Jack into the Red Crewmate from Among Us, with the King himself unveiling the Red character as a cunning Impostor. Although the Among Us characters on Balatro’s face cards may not be as instantly recognizable as Geralt, Yennefer, or Jaskier from The Witcher 3, they undeniably bring an exciting new dimension to the game, making it even more engaging and collaborative.

Vampire Survivors

Given the remarkable resemblance of Vampire Survivors‘ explosive popularity this year, the recent update for Balatro has incorporated fresh face cards inspired by the sensational roguelike bullet hell game. In this revised version, the Jack card now represents the garlic-carrying Poe from Vampire Survivors, while the Queen card portrays Queen Sigma and the King card showcases the vampire featured in Vampire Survivors‘ cover art, who unfortunately doesn’t make an appearance within the game itself.

Dave the Diver

The most recent release in this Balatro crossover update, Dave the Diver, launched back in January of last year. Half ocean-exploring action game and half sushi restaurant manager, Dave the Diver is an addictive, bright, and fun game that’s managed to make quite a name for itself over the last year and a half. Along with appearing in Balatro, Dave the Diver has also crossed over with fellow nautical-themed Indie game Dredge, the King of the Monsters himself, Godzilla, and even the fighting franchise Guilty Gear. In Balatro, Dave the Diver‘s titular hero appears as the Queen card, while sushi restaurant investor Cobra is depicted as the Jack card, and head chef Bancho is the King.

Even though these collaborations in Balatro don’t significantly alter the gameplay, it’s not necessary. The fundamental gameplay mechanism of Balatro is incredibly robust, and these partnerships merely provide fans a reason to revisit the game for another spin, so to speak.
