Reunion in Borderlands 4
In the continuation of the thrilling saga known as Borderlands 4, some iconic characters make a comeback from past installments. From minor figures to significant protagonists, their appearances might bring a twist or two, but nothing can prepare you for those who didn’t return. Below is a rundown of the familiar faces that grace the screens once more in this exciting sequel, shedding light on their current activities and what drives them this time around as they embark on the new Vault Hunting escapade.
To preserve the suspense of Borderlands 4’s storyline, we recommend postponing your read until a later time if you prefer not to be aware of major spoilers.
Claptrap
Everyone’s (Least) Favorite Robot

- First Appearance: Borderlands
- Last Appearance: Borderlands 3
In every installment of the Borderlands series, Claptrap has made an appearance, and Borderlands 4 follows suit. After completing the initial mission, players encounter Claptrap, who styles himself as the “Leader of the Crimson Resistance.” He leaves a lasting impression with his demand that you join his ranks right off the bat. As boisterous and self-absorbed as ever, Claptrap’s exaggerated sense of self-importance has led to numerous casualties throughout the games. However, will this fresh group of Vault Hunters become unintentional victims in Claptrap’s pursuit of his own ambitions?
Dr. Zed
An Unlicensed Medical Professional
- First Appearance: Borderlands
- Last Appearance: Borderlands 2
Regrettably, Dr. Zed was not physically present in ‘Borderlands 3’, yet he made an appearance of sorts in ‘Borderlands 4’. Although it’s delightful to see him back, his role is minimal at best. In the game, Dr. Zed can be found operating his traditional vending and mending machines, from where players can buy shields, repair kits, and other equipment. Despite the unfortunate absence of helping Dr. Zed with his medical procedures, it’s still enjoyable to hear his familiar voice in the harsh world of Kairos.
Marcus
A Greedy Arms Dealer and a Great Story Teller

- First Appearance: Borderlands
- Last Appearance: Borderlands 3
In Borderlands 4, another of its renowned characters makes an appearance, albeit not physically. This time, Marcus assumes the role of the narrator, guiding us through the narrative. Unlike previous appearances where you’d find Marcus on vending machines or gun-worshiping cults, this time around, he’s just a part of the game’s storytelling process. Despite the lack of his usual self-centered or greedy comments, this tale is very much Marcus’ to share.
Moxxi
The Exceptional Bar Owner of Bottoms Up

- First Appearance: Borderlands
- Last Appearance: Borderlands 3
Moxxi has expanded her business to Kairo, where she now manages Moxxi’s Bottoms Up bar. Although Moxxi plays a minor role in the main story, fans are always excited to see her appearance, especially when she delivers flirtatious comments, offers guns as tips, and maintains a positive atmosphere. Additionally, Moxxi’s significance lies in her mechanic, Moxxi’s Big Encore, which allows players to replay boss fights for a fee without having to restart the game like in previous versions.
Amara & Hermes
The Heroic Siren of Partali and Her Pet

- First Appearance: Borderlands 3
- Last Appearance: Borderlands 3
In the upcoming game, Borderlands 4, Amara reappears as a significant character. Alongside her now fully grown pet, Hermes, Amara has been absent from sight for quite some time. During this period, she’s been enhancing her powers through meditation and spiritual growth to become a Siren worthy of learning under Lilith, should she ever be found again. Amara remains determined and fiery in her quest to safeguard the lives of the innocent, though her temper is an issue that occasionally flares up.
Zane
Moxxi’s Bouncer and the Somewhat Retired Vault Hunter

- First Appearance: Borderlands 3
- Last Appearance: Borderlands 3
In simpler terms, Zane – a renowned Vault Hunter and mercenary – finds himself in Kairos with no clear mission. However, it appears that his true purpose involves flirting excessively, reflecting on the old times of Vault Hunting, and maximizing profits by selling loot through his own vending machines, which have taken over Marcus’s business.
In the upcoming game, Borderlands 4, Zane plays a significant role in the storyline. He remains as arrogant and Irish as before, and if there’s anything he enjoys more than lounging at Moxxi’s bar, it’s reminiscing about past victories.
Maurice
The Threatening Yet Peaceful Saurian Runs a Black Market

- First Appearance: Borderlands 3
- Last Appearance: Borderlands 3
As a dedicated gamer of Borderlands 3, I used to know a guy named Maurice who was one of the crew members aboard Sanctuary III. We had some wild times, that ship crashing on Kairos left us all wondering about him. But lo and behold, he shows up as nothing more than a snazzy vending machine peddling his illicit goods!
Each week, I can visit this machine to grab some random legendary weapons or items from his stash. It’s always a gamble, but hey, that’s half the fun, right? His dialogue still packs a punch, but it doesn’t really factor into the story or side missions much anymore. Still, it’s always a delight to hear his voice again, even if it’s just a brief exchange!
GenIVIV
An Extremely Murderous AI Turned Toilet

- First Appearance: Borderlands 3
- Last Appearance: Borderlands 3
In the game Borderlands 3, the character GenIVIV was vanquished by the Vault Hunters. In the upcoming game Borderlands 4, players might encounter GenIVIV in a perilous state within Carcadia Burn. Buried deep within this area, adventurers could accidentally discover a sentient toilet yearning for liberation and a stronger form of existence. In a side mission, GenIVIV has an amusing quest involving Claptrap that delves into themes of love, homicide, and artificial intelligence, but it’s merely supplementary content with no significant impact on the main storyline.
Nyriad
A Deceased Siren Who Lived with the Eridian People

- First Appearance: Borderlands 3
- Last Appearance: Borderlands 3
As a devoted fan, I’ve been eagerly waiting for Nyriad’s return, but unfortunately, she wasn’t physically present in Borderlands 3. Instead, we got a glimpse of her through audio logs and written text. Nyriad is an ancient Siren, a character whose tale is worth revisiting if one dares to uncover it.
Much like before, in the anticipated Borderlands 4, players might stumble upon Evocariums that, when solved within the open world, will elicit more dialogue from Nyriad, allowing us to learn more about her as a Siren navigating these peculiar times.
The Watcher
An Eridian Guardian Who Merely Watches and Basks in Mystery

- First Appearance: Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
- Last Appearance: Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
In this new game, the character known as The Watcher, who initially made an appearance in “Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel” and was expected to play a significant role in an upcoming war, is back. This time, The Watcher communicates with players through their ears as they venture into Primordial Vaults, seeking formidable beasts to defeat and treasures to acquire. The Watcher adheres to a firm philosophy, repeatedly emphasizing their role as an observer rather than a participant in events. During the side mission titled “It’s a Whole Phase Situation,” players encounter The Watcher physically, with them appearing as Watching Gee and asking for help to save their phase-shifting cat.
Final spoiler warning for Borderlands 4!
Lilith
The Firehawk Returns

- First Appearance: Borderlands
- Last Appearance: Borderlands 3
In the Borderlands series, Lilith is the main character who initially appeared as a playable figure but has since evolved significantly, both as a character and as a Siren. After vanquishing Tyreen, a being that drained powers, Lilith regained her Siren abilities and endeavored to save Pandora and Elpis by moving its moon far beyond the galaxies. Currently, she’s been waiting in the Phase for a hero to arrive and free her from an endless timestream of past, present, and future that she’s been stuck in for years. Could it be the Vault Hunters who will save Lilith and bring Firehawk to Kairos as a beacon of hope amidst the waning light?
