The future of Star Wars is looking bright, with the franchise undergoing a period of exciting change. While we can look forward to shows like The Mandalorian & Grogu and the game Star Wars: Starfighter, there are also numerous other potential Star Wars stories being developed.
I just finished reading Kathleen Kennedy’s interview with Deadline, and it’s fascinating to get a look behind the curtain as she hands things over to Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan. She talked about a bunch of projects that are currently paused – everything from a Lando Calrissian story to some really exciting ideas from big names in Hollywood. It all sounds like it could really expand the Star Wars universe, but the big question, as always, is whether these will ever actually make it to the screen. It leaves you wondering what the future holds for these concepts under the new leadership.
8. Simon Kinberg’s Potential Star Wars Trilogy Seems Most Likely to Happen

In 2024, Simon Kinberg was officially announced as the writer and producer of a new Star Wars trilogy. Although there was speculation it might continue the story of the Skywalker family, it’s now believed to be a completely new series of films. Kinberg shared his enthusiasm for the project and his lifelong love of Star Wars in an August 2025 interview with Nerdtropolis.
Dave Filoni has a history with the Star Wars universe, having worked on the series Star Wars Rebels. Kathleen Kennedy recently mentioned the script for his upcoming project is still undergoing revisions after significant changes. However, given Filoni’s familiarity with Star Wars, it’s expected his film will eventually be completed and released.
7. James Mangold & Beau Willimon’s Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi Could Explore a New Era
James Mangold and Beau Willimon are developing a Star Wars movie called Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi. This film would explore the very early history of the Star Wars universe, a different approach from other upcoming projects that take place during or after the Skywalker saga. However, Mangold’s possible involvement with the DC Universe might delay this Star Wars project indefinitely.
Despite being temporarily paused, Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi is still considered a possibility. Kathleen Kennedy, in her recent departure interview, revealed that a script by Jim Mangold and Beau Willimon had been completed, though she noted it was a very different take on Star Wars. Like other projects currently stalled, the film’s future depends on the new leadership at Lucasfilm.
6. Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Script Is Written, But on Hold
Image via Madmen Entertainment Taika Waititi has been developing a Star Wars movie since 2020, and it’s still in the works. He recently told Variety that the film will feature new characters and aim to recapture the playful spirit of the original Star Wars trilogy. Given his success with comedies like What We Do in the Shadows and Thor: Ragnarok, Waititi appears to be a great fit for a Star Wars film with a lighter, more humorous tone.
Kennedy stated in her exit interview that the script for Waititi’s movie was finished and that she liked it. Now that she’s leaving Lucasfilm, the future of the film is in the hands of Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan.
5. Donald Glover’s Lando TV Series or Movie Is Still in Early Stages
Image via Lucasfilm Originally planned as a streaming show, Lando would have chronicled the adventures of Lando Calrissian throughout his life. Donald Glover was set to reprise his popular role from Solo: A Star Wars Story. However, the project has changed direction several times, and was reported to be becoming a movie in 2023.
During her departure interview, Kennedy revealed that Donald Glover had submitted a script, indicating the project is still in development. However, the recent leadership change at Lucasfilm leaves its future unclear. With Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan now leading the company, they might rework the project or postpone it while they gauge audience reaction to The Mandalorian & Grogu and Star Wars: Starfighter.
4. The Fate of Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron Project Is Currently Unknown
Image via Lucasfilm Games LLC and Factor 5 As a huge Star Wars fan, I was really excited when Patty Jenkins signed on to do a movie about the Rogue Squadron pilots back in 2020. It wasn’t going to be based on the games, which was fine with me – an original story sounded great! But then, her work on Wonder Woman 3 kept getting in the way, and things got delayed. After Wonder Woman 3 unfortunately fell apart, Patty announced she’d be circling back to Star Wars: Rogue Squadron again, which is fantastic news! I’m really hoping we finally get to see it now.
Fans haven’t heard much about this project recently. In 2023, Kathleen Kennedy told IGN that it was still being considered, but might become a series on Disney+ instead. However, the fact that she didn’t mention it in her recent exit interview suggests it may have been cancelled.
3. Rey’s New Jedi Order Films Are Also in Limbo
Image via Lucasfilm. During Star Wars Celebration 2023, a new movie featuring Daisy Ridley as Rey and directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy was announced. Despite initial excitement from Lucasfilm about the film’s potential, it has faced several delays. Notably, Kathleen Kennedy didn’t discuss the movie at all during her recent departure interview.
Despite recent concerns, there’s still reason to be optimistic about the future of Star Wars. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has a strong history of success in filmmaking, TV, and journalism, and her vision for the franchise could be a welcome change. The response to Star Wars: Starfighter, set to release next year as the first film following the Skywalker Saga, will likely be a key indicator of how fans feel about the direction of Rey’s story and the New Jedi Order.
2. Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Trilogy Is Unlikely to Happen
Image via Lucasfilm. I remember when Rian Johnson was supposed to create a whole new Star Wars trilogy after The Last Jedi! It was planned before the movie came out and a vocal part of the fanbase really didn’t like it. Now, with how successful Knives Out has become, it seems pretty unlikely he’ll be back to direct a Star Wars film anytime soon. It’s a shame, but I understand he’s got other exciting projects now.
As a big Star Wars fan, I was really interested to hear Kathleen Kennedy talk about what happened with Rian Johnson’s planned trilogy in her exit interview. Unlike the stalled Rogue Squadron movie or the potential Rey film, she directly addressed the future of Johnson’s project because she was asked about it. She mentioned the success of his Knives Out films as a reason why it’s on hold, but also admitted she thinks he was discouraged by all the negative reactions online. Honestly, based on what she said, I think his trilogy is the least likely of those sidelined projects to ever actually happen. It’s a shame, because I was genuinely excited to see where he’d take the story.
1. Adam Driver and Steven Sodenbergh’s Hunt for Ben Solo Has Already Been Rejected
Image via Lucasfilm Adam Driver recently told Variety he and filmmakers Steven Soderbergh and Scott Z. Burns developed an idea for a movie continuing the story of Kylo Ren (Ben Solo) after his character seemingly died in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. However, Driver also shared that Disney turned down the project, explaining they didn’t believe there was a way for Ben Solo to still be alive.
Lucasfilm was receptive to the idea. Kathleen Kennedy, in her departing interview, mentioned a script by Scott Burns featuring Steve Soderbergh and Adam Driver, calling it “great” and saying, “Anything’s possible if someone is willing to take a risk.” This suggests that, despite previous rejection, Ben Solo’s story could potentially continue with the new leadership at Lucasfilm and Disney.
