As a longtime fan of the One Piece series, I’ve been captivated by the diverse cast of characters that roam the Grand Line. From the towering Giants to the diminutive Dwarves, each race offers a unique perspective and adds depth to this intricate world.
The Straw Hat Grand Fleet refers to a group of pirate crews that have pledged allegiance to Monkey D. Luffy, with the Straw Hat Pirates serving as their leaders. This alliance came together towards the end of the One Piece anime’s Dressrosa Arc. It consisted of a wide range of individuals who formed partnerships with the Straw Hat Pirates in order to challenge Donquixote Doflamingo.
The main motivation for many individuals joining forces with the pirates was their desire to free them from Doflamingo’s grasp, even though some, like the Barto Club members, were already fans of them. This alliance brought together a mixed bag of people, with some being seasoned pirates prior to this, while others chose piracy as a means to support Luffy. Let’s explore the different species within this group.
8 Humans
The Majority Of The Crew
In the world of One Piece, a vast majority of prominent characters are human, suggesting that humans form the backbone of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. The Happo Navy and the Yonta Maria Grand Fleet, two of the most substantial crews, boast thousands of members. Since they’re led by humans, it is implied that their members are predominantly human too, as very few non-human characters have been spotlighted among the larger crews.
Among the seven main pirate characters, Cavendish, Bartolomeo, Sai, and Orlumbus are all humans. A large number of the Straw Hat Pirate crew are also humans.
7 Animals
Two Confirmed; More Implied
Initially, Tony, or Chopper as he’s commonly known, wasn’t human; instead, he was a reindeer. However, after consuming the Hito Hito no Mi, a Zoan Devil Fruit, he developed human-like intelligence. This unique trait has proven invaluable to his friends, as it enabled him to become a skilled doctor. Moreover, Chopper possesses the ability to transform into various combat-ready forms.
Farul is Cavendish’s loyal steed and long-term companion, often seen on the battlefield. He belongs to the group known as the Beautiful Pirates, primarily composed of admirers from the Bourgeois Kingdom who follow Cavendish. Despite not having fingers, he demonstrates abilities similar to a human, such as drinking tea from a cup. While not as anthropomorphic as Chopper, Farul still displays these unique capabilities.
As a gamer, I’ve come across these fascinating little guys known as the Tontatta Corps. They’ve got a knack for utilizing insects from Green Bit as their mounts, or so it seemed before they took to the pirate life. It’s hard to say just how much they still rely on these critters now that they roam about like a crew of seafaring misfits. The details are hazy, but it’s an intriguing aspect of their world I can’t wait to explore more!
6 A Cyborg
Or Two, Depending On Your Point Of View
In the realm of One Piece, it’s quite frequent to encounter characters who have swapped out their natural limbs for mechanical ones in combat situations. Some of these mechanical beings weren’t originally human; for instance, Nekomamushi, a guardian mink, replaced his arm with a gun-like prosthetic.
Although they are quite prevalent, only one pirate has been officially inducted into the Fleet, and that is Franky, who happens to be part of the main crew. Known as a cyborg, Franky frequently upgrades himself when parts of his original body get damaged. Interestingly, he uses cola as fuel and carries a mini fridge inside him, capable of holding up to six liters of this soft drink. It was later discovered that another long-term Straw Hat crew member, Sanji, is also a cyborg. He has an exoskeleton and several cybernetic improvements, which were implanted during Judge’s experimentation on his unborn children.
5 A Longarm
One Of The Representatives, No Less
The Longarm Tribe are essentially individuals who possess extra flexibility in their elbows. This unique trait makes them highly sought-after by traffickers. In her pursuit of creating a diverse family, Big Mom gave birth to an individual from this tribe as part of her plan to have offspring from every race on earth.
The sole member of the Longarm Tribe to join the Grand Fleet is Ideo, a skilled martial artist. Ideo tends to literally pull his punches, putting his extra joint past his shoulders, turning his extra range into a last resort. He is the captain of the Ideo Pirates, the smallest crew in the fleet, with only four members.
4 A Longleg
Ideo’s Crewmate
The Longleg Clan shares many similarities with the Longarm Clan, primarily distinguished by their namesake traits. Both clans hold significant value for traffickers and Big Mom, who has had familial ties with members from this clan. Members often take pride in exhibiting their long legs and occasionally adorning them with tattoos. However, they are less frequently featured in the series, with the exception of one unnamed member who is not part of Big Mom’s pirate crew, but serves within the Straw Grand Fleet.
Hailing from the Longleg Tribe, Blue Gilly is an accomplished martial artist who chose to journey with Ideo post Dressrosa. Accompanying him are his two fellow crew members, the relentless former bounty hunters Abdullah and Jeet, who happen to be humans. The story reveals that there’s tension between some Longlegs and Longarms, as evidenced by a series of fights they engage in with these groups, stemming from an age-old feud. However, it seems that some members are capable of forging deeper bonds, as hinted by the existence of a unique hybrid race called “Longlimbs.”
3 Dwarves
The Second Most Represented Group In The Fleet
In the world of One Piece, Dwarves stand out due to their immense size compared to humans. However, don’t let their large stature fool you; they possess tremendous strength, able to crush opponents and level buildings. So far, they have only been confirmed to reside on Green Bit island, and they align with the Kingdom of Dressrosa. They can be somewhat naive at times.
The Tontatta Pirates are essentially a new version of the Tontatta Corps, and they’re exclusively staffed by Dwarves. Their leader, Leo, is an engaging and battle-hardened Dwarf who is rumored to be stronger than his comrades. He is one of approximately 200 crew members. Consequently, Dwarves comprise the vast majority of non-human personnel aboard the ships in the fleet.
2 Giants
Poached From Buggy’s Delivery
In the world of One Piece, it’s common to encounter the towering and powerful race known as Giants. The first time they appeared was at Little Garden, where Luffy and his companions rescued a couple of them from being hunted by Baroque Works. Interestingly, these two giants held high positions in the Giant Warrior Pirates of Elbaf, serving as their co-captains.
Only one giant was shown at Dressrosa. He was named Hajrudin, he wore a helmet and gauntlets. This giant at first sought to eat the Mera Mera no Mi, believing its power would further augment his impressive strength. Despite his arrogance, he proved his loyalty, and held up Usopp, showing the crowd the man who saved them from being slave toys.
Originally, he served as an elite mercenary under Buggy’s Delivery, a government-backed mercenary group. But Hajrudin managed to persuade the other four giants in the organization to depart. Together, they established the New Giant Warrior Pirates, often referred to as the successors of the resurrected Giant Warrior Pirates. Although they are fewer in number, this powerful race makes up the third largest group within their pirate fleet.
1 A Fish-Man
A Long Time Coming
Throughout the series, particularly following the time jump, you’ll encounter beings known as Fish-People. These creatures possess humanoid forms with various fish-like traits. They often share habitats and intermingle with merfolk, and the specific species they resemble isn’t strictly determined by their lineage. Fish-People are physically stronger than land-dwelling humans, and this strength is amplified underwater. The Arlong Pirates, the first group of Fish-People encountered, were hostile towards humans, reflecting a broader historical oppression. However, it’s later revealed that this attitude isn’t typical among their kind as a whole.
Jimbei is a Whale Shark Hybrid, or Fish-Man, who strives to bridge the gap between his species and humans. Originally a confined warlord, he formed an alliance with Luffy during their time together at Impel Down, when they crossed paths during Luffy’s escape attempt. Following the conflict at Fish-Man Island, Jimbei expressed his intention to join the Straw Hat Pirates, but first wished to address some outstanding matters. True to his word, he later joined the crew as their navigator in Wano.
