Every Superhero Game Still in Development After Black Panther Cancellation

2021 has been quite a thrilling ride for superhero video games, with ups and downs that are reminiscent of a rollercoaster journey. For instance, December saw Marvel Rivals storming the scene like a super-powered tornado, shattering numerous records. It’s kept its initial momentum going strong by regularly dishing out new content and staying attentive to fan feedback. However, while Marvel Rivals has hit some incredible peaks, both Marvel and DC have experienced their fair share of troughs this year as well.

In February, Warner Bros. declared that it was terminating the production of Monolith’s Wonder Woman game and closing down the studio altogether. More recently, Marvel shared some disappointing news as well. EA admitted that Cliffhanger’s Black Panther game had been scrapped, and the newly established studio was being shut down only two years after its inception. It’s been quite a challenging period for superhero video games, but there are numerous projects still underway.

Every Superhero Game Still in Active Development

EA Motive – Iron Man

As of September 2022, EA Motive continues to work on their Iron Man video game. As of now, no official trailer or release date for the game has been unveiled, but EA has consistently assured fans that development is going smoothly. In a statement announcing the shutdown of Cliffhanger and the cancellation of its Black Panther game, EA Entertainment President Laura Miele reaffirmed that the Iron Man game by Motive remains in active development.

Furthermore, Miele confirmed that EA’s multi-game agreement with Marvel remains active despite the cancellation of Black Panther. Now, Motive Studio will be responsible for developing all future EA Marvel titles under this contract. Initially, it was mentioned that this deal encompassed three games, so following Iron Man, there are at least two more EA Marvel projects in the pipeline.

Skydance New Media – Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra

Initially unveiled in October 2021 under the title “a story-based, high-octane action-adventure” joint project with Marvel, Skydance’s Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra has been showcasing trailers for quite some time. The latest demonstration of Marvel 1943, which took place in March 2024, featured stunning visuals powered by the Unreal Engine 5.

The video game titled “Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra,” initially planned for launch, has been postponed to a 2026 release period. Skydance announced this move to ensure a higher level of shine on the product, aiming to offer an exceptional gaming experience that aligns with their vision.

Insomniac – Marvel’s Wolverine

The Insomniac-developed Wolverine game, first announced in September 2021, has not been officially showcased since its initial reveal. Despite numerous leaks that surfaced online following the ransomware attack on the studio in December 2023, Insomniac has yet to provide any official information about Marvel’s Wolverine, and there is currently no known release date.

Tribute Games Inc. – Marvel Cosmic Invasion

During Nintendo’s March 2025 event, the game titled “Marvel Cosmic Invasion” was revealed. This side-scrolling beat-em-up allows players to don the costumes of 15 distinct Marvel characters as they take on the Annihilation Wave. Developed by Tribute Games Inc., the studio responsible for the critically acclaimed “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge”, “Marvel Cosmic Invasion” is set to launch in 2025.

Arkane Lyon – Marvel’s Blade

At The Game Awards 2023, one of the most exciting announcements was Arkane Lyon’s take on Marvel’s Blade. In this game, players will step into the shoes of the legendary Daywalker, battling to cleanse Paris of a vampire outbreak. Since the initial trailer and concept art were released, details have been scarce, and there’s no confirmed release date yet. However, whispers in the gaming community hint that fans might need to be patient until 2027 for this anticipated title.

The Current State of DC Video Games

As a die-hard gamer, I’ve got to admit, while Marvel’s got a bunch of projects simmering on the backburner after Black Panther was taken off the table, DC seems to be in a bit of a dry spell right now, aside from The Wolf Among Us 2. There’s no word yet on any other DC games in active development. However, there might be something brewing in the new DC Universe. Peter Safran has confirmed that he, James Gunn, and JB Perrette, CEO of Global Streaming and Games division, are regularly meeting with NetherRealm and Rocksteady studios. So, who knows? Maybe we’ll see some exciting news coming from DC soon!
