Key Takeaways
- Earth’s Dragon Balls grant wishes, but have limits on what can be requested and require a year to recharge.
- Namekian Dragon Balls are larger, have fewer restrictions, and reactivate after 130 days when used.
- The Super Dragon Balls, the original balls, have unlimited power and summon Super Shenron for any wish.
As a long-time fan of the Dragon Ball franchise, I have to say that the variety of dragon balls throughout the series is nothing short of astonishing! From the iconic seven Dragon Balls to the more recent Demon Realm Dragon Balls, each one adds a unique twist to the lore and keeps us on our toes.
How would the Dragon Ball universe function without the actual Dragon Balls? These enigmatic artifacts have served as both the resolution and the catalyst for various challenges across the different Dragon Ball series. Sought after by both heroes and villains, their collection of all seven can grant a wish, ranging from resurrecting the deceased to achieving immortality.
In the original Dragon Ball series, it’s true that each set of Dragon Balls is unique to their respective universe, planet, or realm, and they often come with different rules. With so many variations, keeping them straight can be challenging. To help clarify, here’s a convenient guide outlining every type of Dragon Ball encountered in the Dragon Ball series.
1 Earth Dragon Balls
Dragon Ball
- Creator: Kami
- Status: Canon
- Debut: Episode 1 – “The Secret of the Dragon Balls” (anime), Chapter 1 – “Bulma and Son Goku” (manga)
To start off, the Dragon Balls we’re after in this game are the ones that give it its name and have been around since day one. Since you’re probably familiar with them, let’s skip the detailed explanation. These small, orange spheres sport 1-7 star patterns which help us keep tabs on them. Gather all seven, and we summon the divine dragon Shenron. Depending on his strength, he can grant one or three wishes. As a gamer, I’m always eager to collect these Dragon Balls!
His power has certain boundaries; he doesn’t have the ability to force others to fall in love or eliminate adversaries stronger than himself. However, wishes like eternal youth, immortality, resurrecting the dead, etc., are possible. People can’t make the same wish twice, and they must wait a full year before using the power balls again. After Shenron is summoned, the power balls disperse and transform into stone.
2 Namekian Dragon Balls
Dragon Ball Z
- Creator: Grand Elder Guru
- Status: Canon
- Debut: Episode 44- “Brood of Evil” (anime), Chapter 53- “Planet Namek, Cold and Dark” (manga)
Originally, Kami was a part of one entity with King Piccolo. At the end of the original series, King Piccolo was reborn as Piccolo Jr. If Piccolo Jr passes away, both he and Kami will perish. This means that Earth’s Dragon Balls would become permanently inactive. However, if they can be revived, the Dragon Balls can once again be activated. Krillin, Bulma, and Gohan aim to accomplish this resurrection using the Namekian Dragon Balls.
It was discovered by them that Piccolo and Kami belong to a species originating from another planet, where they had their unique set of Dragon Balls crafted by their ancient leader, Grand Elder Guru. Compared to others, these beings are larger in size. When summoning Porunga with the balls, they call forth a different dragon who, by default, grants three wishes. However, this dragon can only be summoned if the collector knows Namekian and maintains his favor. The Dragon Balls become dormant after being used, but unlike Earth’s Dragon Balls, they do not scatter and reactivate after 130 days have passed.
3 Black Star Dragon Balls
Dragon Ball GT
- Creator: Katatz’s Son/The Nameless Namekian
- Status: Alternate Timeline Following DBZ
- Debut: Episode 1- “A Devastating Wish”
Prior to their division, Kami and King Piccolo were just one Namekian, simply referred to as “Katatz’s Son.” This individual was stronger than the two entities that emerged from their split, and this strength was evident in his creation – the Black Star Dragon Balls. These orbs resemble Earth’s balls but bear black stars instead, and they conjure Ultimate Shenron, a larger, more potent dragon who has less limitations on his granted wishes.
For example, he could kill someone, no matter their power level, if the collector wished it. But if they did, they’d put their planet on a time limit. If the balls aren’t gathered back together within one year, the planet will be destroyed. The balls scatter across the galaxy when they’re used, so without a decent spaceship, the planet’s inhabitants are up the creek without a paddle. At least they don’t go inert once used, so that’s one plus.
4 Super Dragon Balls
Dragon Ball Super
- Creator: Zalama
- Status: Canon
- Debut: Episode 29- “Combat Matches Are a Go! The Captain is Someone Stronger than Goku” (anime), Chapter 6- “Tournament Preparation”
Kami, Grand Elder Guru, and Katatz’s son fashioned their dragon balls by chiseling away pieces from the Super Dragon Orbs. These are the original orbs that served as prototypes for all others, crafted by the deity Zalama. Each orb is as large as a planet and possesses unbounded power. Whoever holds one can have their desire granted, even if it involves the resurrection of entire cosmic realms.
After collecting them all, they bring forth the massive Super Shenron, a being capable of holding multiple universes yet able to reduce itself for easier handling. This cosmic entity is only accessible through the divine language of deities, which interestingly spells backward as “Zhong-liu-de-ka-ppa-si-tteT” in Japanese or “sretta-kac-si-si-pretty pwease” in English. The gods’ methods can be quite enigmatic.
5 Dark Dragon Balls
Super Dragon Ball Heroes
- Creator: Xeno Dende
- Status: Not Canon
- Debut: Super Dragon Ball Heroes (video game), Episode 33- “New Space-Time War! The Ultimate Fierce Battle Begins!” (anime), Chapter 2- “Dark Dragon Ball” (Dark Demon Realm manga)
A potential concern about Earth’s dragon balls is that granting multiple wishes can lead to an accumulation of negative energy. In the series GT, this build-up results in the summoning of the malevolent Black Smoke Shenron, who subsequently divides into seven Shadow Dragons reflecting mankind’s disparate desires throughout history. The video game, Dragon Ball Heroes, capitalizes on this concept by introducing the Dark Dragon Balls.
As a gamer, I’ve encountered these peculiar orbs crafted by the enigmatic Xeno Dende – a malevolent counterpart to Kami’s successor. Unlike the regular spheres, they’re blood-red with swirling black stars that summon the ominous Dark Shenron. What sets them apart is their inherent dark energy; with a single wish, these sinister orbs can conjure Shadow Dragons instead of multiple ones. To add to the challenge, once used, these orbs vanish across time and dimensions, making it an intricate puzzle to retrieve them.
6 Special Dragon Balls
Super Dragon Ball Heroes
- Creator: Fu
- Status: Not Canon
- Debut: Super Dragon Ball Heroes (video game), Episode 1- “Goku vs. Goku! A Transcendent Battle Begins on the Prison Planet!” (anime), Chapter 1- “Prison Planet” (Universe Mission manga)
In addition to the regular Dragon Ball Heroes, there also appeared the Unique Dragon Balls. Similar to Earth’s dragon balls, they summon Shenron. However, unlike the treasure-seeking MacGuffins, these special orbs serve as the means to escape Prison Planet, a conglomeration of worlds manipulated together by its creator, Fu, for his societal testing purposes, trapping anyone he deems suitable for his experiment.
To free yourself from the confines of this planet-prison, you must gather all seven unique Dragon Balls, each one currently in the possession of a different inmate. Eventually, by combining their powers, the Dragon and Time Patrol forces manage to defeat Fu and the malevolent Saiyan Cumber, thus breaking the seal that holds back Prison Planet. Once accomplished, these mystical orbs are employed to liberate all prisoners and return the planets that were once separated back to their original positions in orbit.
7 Cerealian Dragon Balls
Dragon Ball Super (manga)
- Creators: The Cerealian Namekians
- Status: Canon
- Debut: Chapter 69- “The Evolution of Planet Cereal”
In the show, we’ve noticed that the Dragon Balls have been growing larger and larger. It’s quite intriguing then, to find out about the Dragon Balls from Cerealia, which instead shrink in size. Crafted by the Namekians on the planet Cereal, they are as small as marbles. Interestingly, there are only two of these Dragon Balls to be found, unlike the usual seven. These unique Dragon Balls become crucial in the Granolah storyline, where Granolah aims to employ them to resurrect his fallen Cerealian comrades.
It’s a sympathetic goal, but Cereal’s last Namekian, Monaito, thinks the Cerealians’ return could spell doom for the planet’s Sugarian refugees. This might be why its dragon, Toronbo, is surprisingly polite and will advise the collector on the ramifications of their wish, and offer alternatives if they prove to be more palatable. Ultimately, if the collector is 100% sure of their wish, good or evil, Toronbo will grant it.
8 The Omnificence Crystal
Dragon Ball Legends
- Creator: Zalama (presumably)
- Status: Not Canon
- Debut: Dragon Ball Legends mobile game
In the series, every Dragon Ball is connected to the Super Dragon Balls in some way. However, if we consider the mobile game Dragon Ball Legends, it appears that they were originally created by Zalama after experimenting with a prototype. This unique giant orb is referred to as the Omnificence Crystal. By combining smaller blue and red crystals, this crystal forms its distinctive yin-yang symbol.
The crystal doesn’t conjure dragons or shatter into pieces. Instead, it can fulfill as many wishes as its power allows, but this proved troublesome when the swordsman Zahha gained possession of it. He exploited its might to neutralize Beerus’ destructive power, abolish the concept of Ki Detection in Universe 7, and manipulate the memories of Shallot’s allies so they viewed him as a villain rather than an ally. Fortunately, DBL isn’t considered canonical…as of now.
9 Demon Realm Dragon Balls
Dragon Ball Daima
- Creators: The Demon Realm Namekians
- Status: Canon
- Debut: Episode 1- “Conspiracy”
In conclusion, joining the series now are the Dragon Balls from the Demon Realm. Although smaller than the Super Dragon Balls, they’re significantly larger than the Namekian ones. Fortunately, there are just three of them. Unfortunately, each one is in possession of the Tamagami, strong warriors born from the Demon Realm Namekian, Neva.
In the underworld, the Tamagami successfully prevented others from getting hold of the magical orbs, hinting at their immense power surpassing that of demon kings such as Dabura. However, King Kadan from the Third Demon World speculates that even as a child, Goku might possess the strength to overpower them. The future remains uncertain; we’ll have to wait and see what transpires once all three orbs are collected and what they may summon.
