Every Warlord Luffy Fought in One Piece, Ranked From Weakest to Strongest

Monkey D. Luffy leads the Straw Hat Pirates and is one of the most powerful pirates in the world, known as a Four Emperor. Ever since he was a child, Luffy has dreamed of becoming the King of the Pirates, and he understands achieving that goal will take a lot of hard work and fighting.

Luffy has defeated numerous strong enemies, many of whom were once part of the Warlords of the Sea. These weren’t easy fights; he often had to push his limits and count on help from his crew. It’s also important to note that the Warlords he’s faced varied greatly in power.

This post contains spoilers for One Piece.

Buggy

Captain Of The Buggy Pirates

Buggy leads the Buggy Pirates and is currently the head of the Cross Guild. When Luffy first battled Buggy, he wasn’t yet one of the powerful Warlords; he was simply a well-known pirate from the East Blue. Their fight began because Buggy was causing trouble in Orange Town and disrupting the peace.

Even though Buggy ate a Devil Fruit, he wasn’t a match for his opponent. Had Luffy not been held back at the beginning of the story, he likely would have defeated Buggy very quickly. Buggy is unique among those Luffy fights because he ultimately achieved success not through strength, but through a false reputation. People began believing he was connected to the legendary Roger Pirates and Shanks, which led to him becoming a Warlord, and eventually, after the defeat of Kaido and Big Mom, one of the Four Emperors.

Buggy is also on the hunt for the One Piece, meaning he’ll likely run into Luffy again. However, Luffy is much stronger, so he’s expected to win easily, just like before.

Gecko Moria

Led The Thriller Bark Pirates

Gecko Moria was a powerful pirate who, like many others, was eventually defeated by Luffy. He was once strong enough to fight against Kaido, but after losing his entire crew, he became obsessed with creating an undead army of zombies instead of finding new crewmates. This reliance on his Devil Fruit ability, and his zombie army, ultimately led to his defeat, though Luffy still needed a temporary power boost called “Nightmare” to win the fight.

The fight between Moria and Luffy showed how strong willpower can completely turn things around. Moria had become lazy and lost his drive as a pirate, while Luffy thrived on challenges and was always eager to fight. After Luffy defeated him, Moria’s life fell apart – the World Government even tried to have him killed. He barely escaped with his life and was forced to go into hiding.

Donquixote Doflamingo

Leader Of The Donquixote Family

Luffy faced off against Doflamingo, the central villain in the Dressrosa storyline. For years, Doflamingo had been oppressing the people of Dressrosa, and no one could defeat him. Luckily, Luffy arrived in Dressrosa determined to stop Doflamingo, but Doflamingo put up a fierce battle.

Doflamingo possessed the Ito Ito no Mi, a powerful Devil Fruit that let him generate and manipulate strings. These strings weren’t just ordinary threads – they were strong enough to cut through even huge meteors, making them incredibly dangerous to anyone he fought. On top of that, Doflamingo mastered all three types of Haki, further enhancing his fighting abilities and making him a formidable opponent.

Given Luffy’s incredible skills, it’s no wonder he had to use Gear 4th against Doflamingo. Without his training with Rayleigh, Doflamingo would have almost certainly won.

Crocodile

Founder Of Baroque Works

Luffy’s first major opponent in One Piece was Crocodile, who served as the main villain in the Alabasta storyline. Crocodile was attempting to take over Alabasta, the kingdom of Princess Vivi, forcing Luffy to intervene. Their battle happened three times, and Luffy actually lost the first two fights, with Crocodile leaving him nearly defeated each time. However, Luffy eventually figured out Crocodile’s weaknesses and was able to win on their third attempt.

Crocodile, though introduced early in the story, is a powerful opponent. His Devil Fruit, the Suna Suna no Mi, lets him control sand, making him especially dangerous in a dry place like Alabasta, which rarely sees rain. He can not only create sand structures, but also absorb moisture from people, causing extreme dehydration. Currently, Crocodile is a co-founder of the Cross Guild, working alongside Dracule Mihawk.

Dracule Mihawk

Strongest Swordsman In The World

Dracule Mihawk is widely considered the greatest swordsman alive, surpassing all others in skill. He became known for defeating strong Marines, which led the World Government to invite him to join the Seven Warlords. Mihawk fights with Yoru, a completely black sword considered one of the finest in the world.

Mihawk isn’t just a master swordsman; he’s also incredibly skilled with Haki. He’s definitely shown the ability to use both Armament and Observation Haki, and many believe he also possesses Conqueror’s Haki. While Luffy and Mihawk haven’t had a full-fledged one-on-one fight, and probably never will, they briefly clashed at Marineford. At that time, Luffy quickly realized Mihawk was much stronger and tried to escape. However, a fight between today’s Luffy and Mihawk would likely be a very different story.

Blackbeard

Captain Of The Blackbeard Pirates

Marshall D. Teach, more famously known as Blackbeard, leads the Blackbeard Pirates and is one of the most powerful pirates in the world, ranking among the Four Emperors. It’s easy to overlook, but before becoming an Emperor so quickly, Blackbeard was actually a member of the Warlords. He first encountered Luffy in Mock Town, though they didn’t actually fight until the events at Impel Down. During that fight, Blackbeard clearly outmatched Luffy and quickly defeated him.

Since the events that have unfolded, both Luffy and Blackbeard have become incredibly powerful. Blackbeard, especially, is exceptionally strong – he’s the only character in One Piece who wields the power of two Devil Fruits, both of which are very dangerous. He can also use two different types of Haki. It’s currently unclear if he has Conqueror’s Haki, but it’s highly likely the author, Oda, has already established that he does.
