As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share that the upcoming movie titled “Deadpool & Wolverine” is set to deliver on the promise of Wolverine taking center stage. But here’s a twist: get ready for an unexpected overflow of Wolverines in a mind-blowing multiverse adventure! This MCU production doesn’t shy away from its R-rated roots, offering heaps of gore and crude language – just the way Wolverine likes it!

As fans dive into the newest Marvel Cinematic Universe production, they’ll encounter not just one Wolverine but several. For those new to the comics, it would be helpful to explore the different versions of Wolverine in “Deadpool & Wolverine” to fully appreciate the intriguing appearances.

Spoilers ahead for Deadpool & Wolverine!

10 Logan

Hugh Jackman’s Swan Song Returns As A Corpse

Although Ryan Reynolds had promised fans that he wouldn’t disturb Logan (2017), it’s clear now that this was an untruth. Reynolds goes beyond merely touching Logan; instead, he desecrates and defiles his corpse. The movie’s opening scene underscores the fact that no limits exist for Deadpool when it comes to Wolverine’s grave. In the serene setting of North Dakota, Wade Wilson digs up the burial site of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, who had passed away at the end of Logan (2017), leaving an X-shaped marker behind as a reminder of his X-Men legacy.

Although this silent appearance of Wolverine may not speak, it holds significant value. This particular Wolverine served as the foundation of Wade’s world, and once deceased, his universe will gradually disintegrate over countless years. The Logan portrayed here is merely an adamantium skeleton with decaying flesh, carrying the tree that pierced him within his chest.

9 Henry Cavill as Wolverine

The DCEU’s Superman Makes The Perfect Wolverine

Every Wolverine Variant in Deadpool & Wolverine

In an unexpected turn of events, Henry Cavill makes a thrilling appearance in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” taking on the role of Wolverine for the first time in live-action after 24 years. Fans might be surprised by this casting choice, but Cavill fits the part perfectly, and Deadpool himself can’t resist making a witty remark about DC Universe’s past treatment of Cavill’s former character as the Superman of DCEU, who only received one standalone film and a few post-credit scenes.

I’m thoroughly impressed with Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Wolverine, despite the brief screen time and subtle mannerisms. His bulging biceps add to the perfect fit for this iconic character, and when he unleashes them to fight Deadpool, it’s a sight to behold. Even Disney’s strict “no smoking” policy can’t hold him back – Cavill brings an edgy coolness to the role with his cigar in tow as he travels through the TVA time door.

8 Patch

One Of Wolverine’s Eyepatch-Wearing Disguises

In the bustling atmosphere of a casino, Deadpool encounters an unfamiliar Wolverine version, portrayed once again by the talented Hugh Jackman. This newcomer dons a crisp white suit and a sophisticated black bowtie, accompanied by a distinctive eyepatch gracing his left eye. Deadpool recognizes him instantly and greets him with ease, addressing him as “Patch.”

In the comic books, Patch is one of Wolverine’s secret personas. He assumes this identity to gain access to criminal underworlds while acting as a vigilante in Madripoor. This is a nostalgic reference to the 80s and an additional exciting appearance for Hugh Jackman to portray during Wolverine’s thrilling comic book exploits.

7 Comic-Accurate Wolverine

A Wolverine That Is Definitely Not 6 Foot Tall

Every Wolverine Variant in Deadpool & Wolverine

As a dedicated gamer immersed in the X-Men universe, I’ve noticed an intriguing change during gameplay: In this montage, instead of the usual towering figure portrayed by Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, we see a more comic-accurate representation. Now, fans might be aware that the real Wolverine stands at just 5’3″, while Jackman is a looming 6’2″. The significant height disparity may introduce some inaccuracies, but when it comes to looks, mannerisms, and bulging biceps, they are practically identical. It’s both hilarious and surprising to encounter the “short king” version of Wolverine in the game!

In a humorous take on the character, this portrayal of Wolverine as comic-accurately small may not even reach the 5-foot-3 mark. It could be an inside joke, poking fun at fans who have long requested a shorter Wolverine than what they’ve gotten used to with Hugh Jackman.

6 The Worst Wolverine

Deadpool’s New Favorite Wolverine

Every Wolverine Variant in Deadpool & Wolverine

As a gamer, I’ve come across the main Wolverine in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” who goes by the unfortunate nickname of the “Worst Wolverine.” This mutant carries a heavy burden, one that has caused him to disappoint his entire world. His backstory is vast and tragic, filled with regret and self-loathing. He can’t fathom seeing himself as a hero despite the things he’s accomplished. Instead, he’s consumed by self-hatred and an unquenchable thirst for alcohol.

Despite being saddled with Wolverine, Deadpool still has a chance to make amends and demonstrate that his past mistakes don’t define him. He can prove to the X-Men and the world that he is capable of being a hero like they always believed he could be.

5 Uncanny X-Men #251’s Crucified Wolverine

A Wolverine Crucified On A Giant X

In an unfamiliar realm, Wolverine stumbles upon a dismal scene: a rain-soaked area strewn with grisly skulls. The haunting image of an endless sea of skulls is enough to send shivers down his spine. But as he lifts his gaze, the shock deepens: there on a towering yellow X, he sees an image all too familiar – himself, crucified. This poignant tableau harks back to the iconic Marc Silvestri cover of Uncanny X-Men #251, evoking a sense of tragedy.

Among the most memorable Wolverine comic cover pages ever, the image from Uncanny X-Men #251 stands out. In this issue, Wolverine is depicted hanging from a wooden X by the Reavers, tormented by disturbing hallucinations. The last thing he wants now is for Deadpool to peer into his delusions.

4 Clint Eastwood Wolverine?

A Different Side To Old Man Logan

Every Wolverine Variant in Deadpool & Wolverine

There’s a distinctive portrayal of Wolverine that captures our attention, which is often identified as Mark Millar and Steve McNiven’s “Old Man Logan,” but something feels amiss about it. In this depiction, Logan has advanced in years, yet he resides in a mountainous area and wears clothing reminiscent of the Old West. Unlike the Logan from “Old Man Logan,” who shuns violence when with his family, this version wields a shotgun instead.

This Wolverine character might have been influenced by Clint Eastwood’s persona, or at least be modeled after the iconic cowboy actor-turned-director. The character’s appearance with its makeup and scars bears some resemblance to him, and Eastwood has long been a go-to choice for casting due to their shared characteristics.

3 Age of Apocalypse Wolverine

A One-Handed Wolverine

In a new universe Deadpool explores, he encounters a hairy, bearded man – Wolverine from Earth-295. This Wolverine, known as Weapon Omega, has unleashed fury and destruction, leading to a bleak future where humanity is nearly wiped out. Upon arrival, Deadpool must confront this enraged Wolverine.

In the comic books, t Alpha” (1994). During a fight against Cyclops, he lost his left hand which was then replaced with adamantium, hinting at Logan’s ominous future.

2 John Byrne’s Brown and Yellow Wolverine

A Classic Costume For A Classic Hulk Battle

Every Wolverine Variant in Deadpool & Wolverine

In an intriguing twist, renowned author and illustrator John Byrne is mentioned by Deadpool as he makes an appearance in yet another Wolverine’s realm. This marks the initial introduction of this variant with a costume true to the comic books. It’s none other than the iconic yellow and brown attire that John Byrne created when he joined the X-Men team during the 1980s.

As a dedicated gamer and comic book fan, I can’t help but get excited when I hear that Hugh Jackman will be donning the classic brown-ochre Wolverine suit once again. And the fact that this version of Wolverine gets to go toe-to-toe with the Incredible Hulk? Absolutely mind-blowing! Of course, it would have been amazing to witness the epic battle between these two iconic characters, but even just the prospect of this homage to Wolverine’s first appearance in the comics is enough to get my heart racing.

1 Wolverine (1988) #1

The Original Solo Series’ First Outfit

Every Wolverine Variant in Deadpool & Wolverine

As a gamer, I’ve come across a version of Wolverine that’s quite elusive due to his distinct appearance and location. It’s highly probable that this variant harks back to Wolverine’s first-ever solo comic book series adventure in 1988, specifically issue #1 of Wolverine. The cover art portrays a Wolverine with an unusually long mane of hair, and a wrestling-inspired getup that takes me back to the old-school vibes.

The first issue of Wolverine, illustrated by John Buscema and Al Williamson, pays tribute on its cover to the influential creators behind Wolverine’s iconic status and appearance in Marvel Comics.
