Many players were surprised when the 3.0 Free Update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons arrived ahead of schedule. Unexpectedly, familiar characters started appearing in new roles, seamlessly integrating back into island life. The update also brought back many players who hadn’t played in years, eager to try out the new features.
Longtime fans of the Animal Crossing series likely noticed how naturally these changes happened. The game has always been about things shifting behind the scenes, and no characters represent that quite like Kapp’n and Mr. Resetti. They used to be central to how you traveled, faced consequences, and understood the game’s structure, but New Horizons has given them new, more relaxed roles. Here’s a look at their history and how they’ve evolved in the latest game.
Kapp’n: An Animal Crossing NPC Likely Older Than the Island Itself
Kapp’n is a turtle character based on the kappa, a playful and sometimes troublesome creature from Japanese myths who lives in rivers. His name sounds like “captain,” but is said with a sailor’s drawl. He really plays up the pirate stereotype with phrases like “yar” and “sprat,” and often calls the player fish-related nicknames. Kapp’n first appeared in the game Dobutsu no Mori+ and has been included in every version of the game since. What makes Kapp’n special is:
- A deep attachment to the sea
- A strong work ethic
- A fondness for women, cucumbers, and old shanties
- A belief that travel should take time
His constant singing quickly made him a notorious character in Animal Crossing. Players felt stuck – it was impolite to interrupt him, but his songs could get annoying. This led to a huge amount of fan-made memes and content celebrating (and poking fun at) his fondness for sea shanties.
Every Job Kapp’n Has Ever Taken Seriously
Kapp’n’s defining role has always been transportation, but the “how” has shifted with each game.
- Ferry Operator (Animal Crossing)
- Rowed players to the island via the Game Boy Advance link cable
- Sang lengthy sea shanties during the trip
- Turned loading screens into character moments
- Taxi Driver (Wild World)
- Replaced Animal Crossing‘s Rover as the introduction character
- Determined the player’s appearance, name, and town
- Frequently appeared off-duty at The Roost
- Bus Driver (City Folk)
- Drove players between the town and the city
- Delivered gender-specific dialogue and light flirtation if the player villager was female
- Complained about “modern youngsters” while whistling shanties
- Boat Captain (New Leaf)
- Returned to the sea with a motorboat
- Transported players to Tortimer’s Island
- Introduced his family as permanent NPCs: his wife Leilani, his mother Grams, and his daughter Leila
- Island Tour Guide (New Horizons)
- Ferries players to mystery islands in exchange for Nook Miles
- Runs the Resort Hotel in Animal Crossing Update 3.0
Mr. Resetti: Animal Crossing’s Once Terrifying NPC
While Kapp’n is known for his patience, Mr. Resetti is all about consequences. First appearing in the original Animal Crossing, Resetti’s job was simple: make sure players saved their game. If you didn’t, he’d show up at your door and give you a lengthy lecture – sometimes lasting several minutes! The more often you reset without saving, the angrier he’d get. Though he’s famous for his explosive temper, Resetti is actually a calm, polite, and thoughtful character when he’s not on the job. He firmly believes that life doesn’t offer do-overs, and neither should the game.
How Resetti Worked Before New Horizons
Players who started their own island in Animal Crossing might not be familiar with the older, stricter side of Resetti. He used to be quite famous – or infamous! – because many kids playing on GameCubes or Nintendo DS were scared of him. While newer versions of the game made him a bit nicer, he always still had an important message to share. In the earlier games, Resetti would…
- Forced players to repeat phrases
- Created fake reset screens
- Broke the fourth wall regularly
- Appeared during Groundhog Day events
- Operated secret Surveillance Centers with his brother, Don.
Mr. Resetti in New Horizons: Laid Off, Not Gone
Image via Nintendo The introduction of autosaving completely changed things in the game. Previously, Mr. Resetti would scold players for resetting, but with autosave eliminating resets, he lost his job at the Reset Surveillance Center. Now, he runs the Rescue Service, which helps players who get lost or stuck. While it wasn’t immediately obvious, hints within the game suggest it’s still Mr. Resetti in charge, like his habit of giving you encouraging speeches when you’re low on Nook Miles.
After the 2.0 update, Resetti returned physically:
- Visiting The Roost
- Appearing in Happy Home Paradise
- Showing up in Photopia and on signage
With the new 3.0 update, he can now tidy up areas by removing items or flowers. He’s still keeping things organized, but in a gentler way.
