- Bungie considered a Destiny 2 subscription but faced rejection after pitching.
A video game reporter recently posted remarks from ex-Bungie workers who allege that the company fosters an unpleasant work atmosphere. At present, Bungie manages the widely played multiplayer shooter “Destiny 2,” and they are also testing their upcoming cooperative extraction shooter titled “Marathon.
Last year, Bungie announced that approximately 220 employees were being let go, which equates to around 17% of its workforce. The reasons cited for this decision included increasing production costs, changes within the gaming industry, and challenging economic circumstances, despite the successful debut of the The Final Shape expansion for Destiny 2. Lately, Bungie has been under scrutiny over various allegations, and this recent insight into their operations is only intensifying the criticism.
Following the art theft scandal involving Bungie, game journalist Destin Legarie shared a detailed YouTube video lasting nearly 10 minutes. The interviews he conducted with former employees revealed several concerns about Bungie’s work environment, suggesting a “toxic culture.” Allegations included instances of humiliation, HR prioritizing their own interests, and leadership mismanagement. Additionally, one ex-employee commented that the studio’s actions were driven by greed, as there were reports of staff being reprimanded for monetization practices while seemingly disregarding the opinions and concerns of players and the community.

Destin’s video discussed the topic of a potential subscription for Destiny 2, as the studio had briefly considered implementing a standard subscription service for this shooter game. Previous rumors about the subscription, leaked from a Destiny 2 datamine, were debunked as false, but Destin’s video highlighted that the team proposed the idea, only to have it firmly rejected. Moreover, Destin’s sources suggested that Bungie’s higher-ups were determined to monetize Destiny 2 in various ways.
In the midst of Bungie’s recent turmoil, Update 8.2.6.2 for Destiny 2 was released in May 2025. This update included numerous bug fixes and lowered the chances of Trials of Osiris matches. Additionally, other adjustments are being made to Destiny 2, such as shortening the Dungeon rotation for Rite of the Nine to two weeks. This ongoing event, which players have been enjoying, was initially scheduled to start on May 6 and will now end on July 15, paving the way for the launch of The Edge of Fate expansion.
