As a long-time fan who has witnessed the evolution of gaming since the days of Bethesda’s 2D classics, I can’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment seeing them hesitate to embrace change. The world of gaming is no longer the quaint fringe it once was; it’s a bustling metropolis where Unreal Engine 5 reigns supreme.
To call Bethesda’s 2023 sci-fi RPG Starfield controversial is an understatement.
Without a doubt, it boasts an impressive size and grandeur, yet it hasn’t struck a chord with viewers as deeply as games such as Fallout or The Elder Scrolls have.
One potential cause might be that Bethesda’s internal Creation Engine tends to generate peculiar glitches and technical troubles. Previously employed artist Nate Purkeypile, now the founder of Just Purkey Games, recently chatted with Kiwi Talkz during a promotional tour for their latest release, “The Axis Unseen“.
At Just Purkey Games, with Purkeypile being the sole developer, he opted for Unreal Engine 5 to build his game instead of the usual Creation Engine. He shared that creating open-world games has historically been a challenging process.
As a gamer, I can confidently say that it’s no longer unusual to see open-world games dominating the scene, and tools like Unreal Engine 5 have become my secret weapon. In all honesty, I’d be hard-pressed to imagine how I could have delivered this game in just three years if I had stuck with something like the Creation Engine. With Unreal 5, I’ve saved myself countless hours – we’re talking about hundreds here!
Major Studies Have Recently Shifted to Unreal Engine 5, and Bethesda Should Join Them
Kiwi Talkz pointed out that Bethesda has yet to transition to Unreal Engine 5, much like CD Projekt RED did but with considerable effort. Purkeypile compared working in Creation Engine to being a conductor while simultaneously laying down new tracks, all while the train is on fire, symbolizing the intense and challenging nature of moving from one game engine to another.
Moving from Creation to Unreal Engine will cost time and money, according to Purkeypile, but he considers it a worthwhile investment. He expresses surprise that Bethesda might make such a leap. “It’s crucial to reassess technology,” he states, “as games are always evolving. Sticking blindly to the decisions of the past can be risky.
343 Industries, one of Xbox’s studios, is transitioning to Unreal Engine 5 for their Halo franchise, but Bethesda appears unwilling to change from its familiar technology for the moment.
