Xbox has faced increasing challenges in keeping up with its main competitors in the gaming industry. While it once led the console market with a string of fantastic games, from the very first Xbox through the Xbox One, its recent progress has slowed. Despite acquiring companies like Bethesda and the popularity of Game Pass, it’s starting to seem like Microsoft’s future in gaming might be limited.
According to feedback from Xbox players collected through the Player Voice system, the most requested feature was more exclusive games.
Despite recent challenges, Xbox still has strong potential. Reviving some of their popular, older game franchises could easily shift things in their favor. Looking back, Xbox has a history of successful games and talented developers, many of which were once industry leaders. To regain a significant market share, they’ll need to leverage these established franchises and remind everyone why they were once considered the best in gaming.

Banjo-Kazooie
The Perfect Console Mascot
Details:
- Neglected franchise that would fit in well with the rest of the console’s exclusives
- Modern platformers remain incredibly popular across all devices
Many gamers consider Banjo-Kazooie a classic Xbox franchise that’s been overlooked for too long, placing it among the greats like Mario and Sonic. While Nintendo continues to thrive with popular, character-driven platforming games, Xbox has mostly moved away from the genre, except for smaller titles. Considering the recent success of games like Astro Bot and Donkey Kong Bananza, it would be smart for Xbox to revisit this type of game and capture some of that market.
Bringing back the Banjo-Kazooie series would be a smart move for Xbox. It would add a unique, family-friendly game to their lineup, remind players of a beloved classic, and help Xbox stand out from the many shooter and Western RPG games available. A new Banjo-Kazooie could attract both longtime fans and a new generation of players, and given how powerful recognizable characters are, it’s something Xbox should seriously consider as they look to the future.
Halo
Where It All Began
Details:
- Full reinvention to bring back the glory days
- Strong campaign would be a must-have
Halo remains the most recognizable brand for Xbox, but the series hasn’t been as culturally impactful as it once was, due in part to some disappointing games recently. While Xbox has tried to improve the game with updates and new online features, it hasn’t regained the leadership position it held during the original Halo games. The success of franchises like Call of Duty and Battlefield proves that players still enjoy traditional first-person shooter gameplay.
To revitalize the series, Halo needs a fresh, innovative approach – perhaps by emphasizing a more serious, military theme, offering a campaign with more freedom, or completely changing the game’s overall mood. Whatever happens, the next project needs to feel like a grand vision, not just a response to what’s popular. Hopefully, after revisiting older titles, Xbox will recognize how crucial Halo is to its identity and start creating games based on player desires, rather than chasing current trends.
Viva Piñata
Cozy Gamers Are Here To Stay
Details:
- Life sims are incredibly popular today
- Could compete with much more mainstream releases
I remember when Viva Piñata first came out – it was way ahead of its time! Now that cozy and open-ended games are so popular, I really think it could be a huge hit if it came back. I loved everything about it – building up my garden, attracting all the piñatas, and just watching the whole ecosystem grow. Plus, it was so bright and colorful, it really pulled you in and was instantly addictive!
Games like Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley have proven incredibly popular, likely driving a lot of Nintendo Switch sales. This shows players are looking for more than just action-packed games. To attract a wider audience, Xbox should consider focusing on a broader range of game types and appealing to different kinds of players.
Fallout 6
Elder Scrolls Can Wait A Bit Longer
Details:
- Clear interest in the IP from players
- Open-world RPGs remain the king
The news that Xbox was buying Bethesda surprised a lot of people, bringing many beloved game franchises under one company. While The Elder Scrolls 6 has been announced, its release date is still unknown. However, with the recent success of the Fallout TV show and renewed interest in Fallout 76, many players are hoping we’ll soon be able to return to the Fallout universe.
The fourth major game in the series received a somewhat mixed, though generally positive, response. It’s always been surprising to me that we never got a fifth game or a continuation of the New Vegas story. Considering the amazing fan-made projects, I think it would be fantastic to expand the post-apocalyptic world beyond its current location, add new story elements, and revitalize the franchise – potentially launching a new era for Bethesda.
Shadowrun
Plenty Of Room For More Turn-Based RPGs
Details:
- Effective blend of sci-fi and tactical gameplay
- Xbox lacks a major exclusive sim-style RPG
The world of Shadowrun has a lot of potential for a modern, turn-based RPG, a genre that’s currently booming. Games like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Clair Obscur have proven there’s a strong demand for strategic gameplay, but Xbox isn’t currently satisfying that demand, even though Shadowrun‘s tactical style could be a great fit.
I still consider the games in this series to be among the best RPGs ever made, and I believe many other players feel the same. A big, cinematic reboot would be a perfect way for Xbox to stand out. With the right development team, this franchise could become a truly immersive RPG, combining meaningful choices, realistic game mechanics, and a compelling noir story – a genre where Xbox doesn’t have much competition right now and could really make a name for itself.
