As a die-hard Battlefield fan who’s been through the highs and lows of this iconic series since its inception, I can hardly contain my excitement! The recent revelations about Battlefield’s return to its roots are music to my battle-weary ears.
This week has been exciting for Battlefield enthusiasts. Firstly, Vince Zampella, the main man behind Battlefield, validated much of TopMob’s previous reporting. He confirmed that Battlefield will revert to 64-player matches, bring back the classic four-class system, and adopt a more “back-to-basics” approach. Moreover, Battlefield General Manager Bryon Beede announced that the game will undergo large-scale community testing early next year, along with mentioning that they’ve been conducting near-daily internal testing for over a year.
Additionally, Zempella also verified a fresh gaming experience emerging from Ripple Effect, as per TopMob’s reports, which is said to be Battlefield’s venture into a new free-to-play Battle Royale format. This move mirrors the strategy adopted by Call of Duty with Call of Duty: Warzone, where they achieved success by releasing a premium game along with it.
Let’s delve into some fresh insights about the game we mentioned earlier, now that its details have been confirmed. We’ll zero in on the main aspects of the game that enthusiasts might find interesting. Initially, let’s talk about where and when the action will unfold. As per TopMob’s report, the game is set to occur sometime between 2027 and 2030. The central plot revolves around a significant private military force clashing with NATO.
Instead of beating around the bush, let’s discuss multiplayer modes right away. At launch, we’re planning to offer 45 unique weapons, which is twice as many as Battlefield 2042’s core multiplayer offering had at its release. Furthermore, our goal is to include approximately 10 multiplayer maps, placing us on par with games such as Battlefield 1, 3, and 4 in this regard.
The game is going to undergo a major update focusing on destruction, and while it’s unconfirmed if this means the comeback of levolution, several reports suggest that the game will feature caliber-based destruction similar to Rainbow 6 Siege, where different types of ammunition cause varying degrees of damage. Additionally, there are indications that the game will introduce a new mechanic allowing players to pick up and move downed opponents. This feature seems tailored for the Battle Royale mode, but it’s hinted that these changes are part of the team’s effort to revive the unique experiences that made Battlefield games iconic.
I’ve also been told that the team is currently weighing up the name of the game. Over the past year or so, the team has been carrying out mass surveys (some of the biggest I’ve heard about), with participants voting on which game name they prefer: Battlefield or Battlefield 6. So, fingers crossed, we might not have to wait long until that is officially announced.
To sum up, it seems to me that “large-scale community-driven testing” likely goes beyond regular beta phases and may well be a revival of the Battlefield Community Test Environment (CTE). This environment played a significant role in shaping both Battlefield 1 and 4 during their development.
