EXCLUSIVE: Randy Pitchford Had More Input in ‘Now You See Me’ Than in the Borderlands Movie

In a somewhat surprising turn of events, Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox Software and architect of the Borderlands series, had a smaller hand in the production of the latest Borderlands film compared to his involvement with the upcoming release of Now You See Me: Now You Don’t. During our conversation at Gamescom, we delved into various aspects of Borderlands 4, and inevitably, the topic of the Borderlands movie arose.

Many found it disappointing, even hardcore supporters included. Randy confided in me that he enjoyed it, yet emphasized that he couldn’t view it objectively like others might.

Randy Pitchford Spearheads the Magic in Now You See Me: Now You Don’t

The third film in the Now You See Me series, released in 2013, is centered around a team of magicians who pull off daring heists and breathtaking stunts. Interestingly, Randy Pitchford played a more significant role in this film’s production than he did with the Borderlands movie.

Looking back to August 2024, the release of the Borderlands movie was met with poor reviews. Currently, it has a Rotten Tomatoes score of only 10% and an IMDb rating of 4.7/10. I inquired about Randy’s plans if he had complete creative control over another attempt to make a Borderlands movie, but he declined the opportunity.

It seems like making such decisions might not be ideal, given that I don’t have experience as a filmmaker. In fact, I’ve observed situations where those who own the intellectual property took complete creative control – and I’ve found myself on the receiving end of it!

In my past, I worked on a James Bond video game with Electronic Arts. We’re nearing the release date, which is two weeks away, and the creators of James Bond suggested that perhaps the game could be less violent. Their idea was to remove all the guns from the game instead.

Please take the lead; I’m not an expert here. The professionals among us should guide us to the best solution possible, considering that navigating through this can already be challenging.

In my investigation, it was discovered that Pitchford played a far more active role in the production of Now You See Me: Now You Don’t compared to his involvement with Lionsgate’s Borderlands film.

In another existence, I’d be a magician, and just lately, my team at The Magic Castle – a Hollywood club where I preside – has been responsible for the enchantment and magical production of the upcoming film titled “Now You See Me 2: Now You Don’t.

The impact I made on that film went beyond a simple role and left a more significant mark on the narrative and final product, compared to my contribution to Borderlands, which is remarkable.

In the future, there could potentially be another Borderlands film, but for the time being, enthusiasts can look forward to the global release of Borderlands 4 on September 12, serving as an alternative source of excitement.
