EXCLUSIVE – Sniper Elite’s Battle Royale Game Has Been Canceled as Tencent Pulls Funding

As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of gaming under my belt, I must admit, this news about Project Archipelago’s cancellation has left me feeling a tad melancholic. The prospect of a Sniper Elite Battle Royale was indeed intriguing, and the thought of strategizing in teams of three, battling it out to be the last team standing, was an enticing concept.

In just a few short months following its initial reveal, the developers at Rebellion have decided to scrap their project titled Sniper Elite Battle Royale, known as Archipelago.

Initially unveiled in August 2024, Project Archipelago, also referred to as Sniper Island within the team, was a competitive multiplayer Battle Royale game where teams of three engaged in survival combat until only one remained. The game underwent its final Alpha testing sessions around mid-August 2024.

TopMob recognizes that the game got canceled as Tencent opted to stop financing the project. Although we haven’t been able to determine the precise reason, it appears from discussions with top brass at Rebellion that funding was withdrawn due to the disappointing debut of Firewalk Studios’ Concord, which made Tencent hesitant about certain projects.

Fans of Sniper Elite weren’t entirely pleased with Archipelago’s announcement. The unveiling drew criticism on Rebellion’s official YouTube channel, as fans expressed bewilderment over the shift from single-player games towards Battle Royale style gameplay.

It’s clear that even though the game got canceled, no one lost their job as the team was reassigned to other ventures, such as Sniper Elite: Resistance, which is the upcoming main installment of the Sniper Elite series.

TopMob asked Rebellion to comment before publication, but they declined to comment.
