Exclusive: The Flash Video Game Canceled Due to DCEU’s Poor Performance

Summary

  • Warner Bros reportedly canceled The Flash video game due to poor DCEU performance, impacting multiple games.
  • Flash has historical success in comics, TV, and games, but has struggled in the DCEU.
  • Warner Bros Montreal shifted focus from Flash to assisting on Wonder Woman amid uncertainty.

A video game featuring The Flash as the main protagonist has allegedly been scrapped by Warner Bros Games, following the poor reception of the 2023 DCEU movie. This news about the shelved Flash project emerges when Warner Bros is grappling with the consequences of several underperforming games in recent times, including Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

It’s hard to argue against the fact that The Flash is a well-known character and one of DC Comics’ most significant superheroes. Over the course of 80 years, numerous comics, video games, movies, and other media have showcased him as a central figure. In recent times, The Flash has achieved notable success, largely due to the popular Injustice game series and the long-running TV show that ended in 2023. However, his attempts to revitalize the Warner Bros-led DCEU and play a crucial role in their film industry have not been successful. Concerningly, it seems that these setbacks in the movie department might affect The Flash’s chances of getting his own video game.

A surprise video game centered around The Flash, which had been under consideration by Warner Bros Montreal (Gotham Knights studio), was abandoned some time ago, as reported by Bloomberg. It’s said that the decision to scrap the project was prompted by the disappointing box office performance of DCEU’s The Flash in June 2023, indicating that it was likely dropped within the past year-and-a-half.

Intriguingly, the insider reported that WB Montreal initially expressed interest in developing a game centered on The Flash following their choice between the Scarlet Speedster and the infamous Batman villain, The Joker. This decision came after a pitch for a John Constantine game (a lesser-known DC character) was not approved by Warner Bros Games.

Moreover, according to the source, several key personnel at the Canadian studio have departed since the cancellation of The Flash game, citing “lack of new projects” and “dissatisfaction with their higher-ups” as reasons for leaving.

Warner Bros Montreal Shift Focus from The Flash to Wonder Woman

After discontinuing their Flash game, Warner Bros Montreal appears to be contributing to Monolith’s Wonder Woman game project, initially unveiled at the end of 2021. However, the status of this project is currently unclear, as there have been few updates since its announcement. If Wonder Woman ever comes out, Warner Bros Games plans to distinguish it from their recent titles like MultiVersus, which is scheduled to end server support in May 2025.

Besides the upcoming Wonder Woman project, there are whispers that another significant DC hero might star in his own game at some point. Given the acclaim of the VR title called Batman: Arkham Shadow, it’s suggested that Batman may reappear in the single-player game genre under the watch of Rocksteady, the creators of Batman Arkham.
