EXCLUSIVE – Ubisoft’s Far Cry Extraction-Based Multiplayer Shooter Has Been Rebooted

According to our sources, the multiplayer shooter for Far Cry, temporarily known as Maverick, has been revived.

Originally planned as a multiplayer aspect for Far Cry 7, Project Maverick transformed into its own standalone project in early 2023. However, following an assessment within the company, the project was restarted with fresh plans.

As a gamer, I’ve been hearing whispers for months now about some troubles brewing behind the scenes with our favorite game’s development. The last blow was dealt when the talented tech team known as Talisker, who were previously working on this project, shifted their focus entirely to another project named Blackbird towards the end of December. It seems they wanted to ensure that Blackbird stayed on course without any hiccups, which unfortunately, might have been a sign that our game is no longer in their hands.

Maverick was envisioned as a team-based multiplayer shooting game, set in the chilly landscapes of Alaska. In this challenging environment, players would have to endure extreme weather conditions, dangerous wildlife, AI enemies, and rival gamers while attempting to survive and successfully extract resources.

It’s clear that Ubisoft Montreal, the team responsible for both Maverick and Blackbird (Far Cry 7), is returning to the prototype phase with Ubisoft Sherbrooke. Meanwhile, Ubisoft Berlin, who had been aiding in the game’s development, has seen around a dozen developers shift to Blackbird, and another dozen move to different projects. Unfortunately, it appears that about 50 developers are currently without an assigned project and might be reassigned to a viability status this month.

It’s uncertain why Maverick was restarted, but it appears to be part of Ubisoft’s recent plan to simplify their teams and projects due to challenges within the company. However, some members of the Blackbird project express doubts about a 2026 release date, fearing that the project has grown too large in terms of staff and budget. The teams working on this project include Ubisoft Montreal, Ubisoft Berlin, Ubisoft Annecy, Redstorm, and the Talisker team.

It’s been reported that the project is currently undergoing playtesting, and multiple sources have informed TopMob that the game plays well and breaks away from the standard Far Cry format in various aspects, including its overall gameplay and movement mechanics.

At the time of writing, Ubisoft has yet to officially comment on Maverick or Blackbird.
