EXCLUSIVE: ‘We Will Break 100 Million Units With This Launch’—Randy Pitchford on Borderlands 4

The highly anticipated Borderlands 4 is scheduled for global release on September 12, marking the most expansive and daring project Gearbox has ever undertaken. In Borderlands 4, gamers can look forward to immersing themselves in a connected open world and enjoying an unprecedented variety of gameplay choices and styles.

At Gamescom, I had a conversation with Randy Pitchford to gain insights into Borderlands 4, discussing its creation process and future plans following its launch. Intriguingly, Randy made a strong claim regarding the sales success of the series and the significant impact that Borderlands 4 is expected to have.

‘We’re Now Expert at Making Borderlands’

During my encounter with Randy Pitchford at Gamescom, I left equipped with lots of details about Borderlands 4 – the upcoming open-world shooter by Gearbox. As the head honcho and brains behind the franchise, Pitchford has been instrumental in propelling the brand for the past 20 years, collaborating diligently with a skilled and passionate crew to transform this series into something iconic.

Pitchford reflected on that and looked to the future of the series beyond Borderlands 4:

We’re only just starting to explore what our post-launch will entail, but I’ve got some truly thrilling ideas up my sleeve that I can’t wait to discuss with you.

In the process of creating Borderlands 4, we’ve honed our skills to a fine point. As with any game development, we learn and adapt along the way, which is one reason why our post-release content consistently excels.

Reflecting on Borderlands’ realm that extends beyond the game, it’s astonishing to me. Back at Gamescom, I was there promoting Borderlands 1, essentially shouting from the highest peak, hoping to draw any attention whatsoever. Alas, my efforts were largely unnoticed.

A lot of people predicted that Borderlands wasn’t going to work.

The game franchise is about to reach an impressive milestone of selling over 100 million units upon its launch, making it a massive success for the entire series.

The Borderlands series, which is over fifteen years old, has been developed and popularized by Pitchford for approximately two decades. Over time, with each new release, the franchise has grown increasingly dynamic and action-packed, reaching its current peak with Borderlands 4.

Based on the previous figures, it seems that the series has moved approximately 92 million units. With this in mind, Gearbox appears to be expecting a minimum of 8 million sales for Borderlands 4.
