As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the gaming universe has been graced with some truly remarkable RPGs in recent years. However, there’s always room for more, especially when it comes to filling the Mass Effect-shaped hole in our hearts. That’s where Archetype Entertainment’s Exodus steps in, and boy, does it deliver!
Over the past few years, Western RPG enthusiasts have had a wealth of exciting games to choose from. For instance, Baldurs Gate 3 was crowned 2023’s Game of the Year at the Game Awards, and studios like BioWare and Obsidian continue to produce epic 3D experiences such as Dragon Age: The Veilguard and Avowed. As a result, it has become challenging to decide which immersive, hundred-hour adventure we should embark on next.
Ever since wrapping up my Mass Effect adventure, I’ve found myself yearning for something equally epic to fill that void in my gaming heart. While BioWare’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard has certainly scratched a part of the itch, some critics have pointed out that its story and writing don’t quite delve as deeply into thematic and narrative complexity as previous games did.
In a fresh development, a newly established studio called Archetype Entertainment, led by ex-BioWare developer James Ohlen, appears to be continuing the storyline where Mass Effect ended. Recently, they’ve unveiled a gameplay trailer for their upcoming project, Exodus, which promises the exciting action and captivating narrative we’ve been eagerly anticipating.
Given that Ohlen played a crucial role in developing games like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age: Origins, and the original Mass Effect, it’s reassuring that this project is under his guidance, increasing the chances of its prosperity.
In the recently released trailer named “The Traveler’s Creed”, we get a clear glimpse into the engaging gameplay mechanics of Exodus, along with brief storyline fragments that offer a tantalizing preview of the broader narrative arc.
Given the somewhat disappointing reception to Mass Effect: Andromeda from BioWare, it’s understandable that fans would pin their expectations on a worthy Mass Effect sequel. It’s important to note that the gameplay and dialogue in the trailer seem intentionally reminiscent of the Mass Effect series.
While numerous reviews, including ours, have quickly noted similarities with Mass Effect, it’s undeniable that the game is carving out its unique interpretation of dramatic sci-fi action. For example, the intense combat sequences are intentionally incorporated to showcase how this title aspires to surpass existing boundaries in the genre.
Despite the fact that Mass Effect had decent combat, it was the story and characters that really drew us in. Interestingly enough, one of the most exciting aspects of the Exodus trailer is the spectacular combat on display, such as the intense battle against a war-ravaged battle bear.
In another twist, certain characters and fighting techniques seem reminiscent of Warframe, making it seem quite appropriate, particularly when enhanced by jaw-dropping particle effects that will undoubtedly test the capabilities of the most advanced modern technology.
In summary, the brief narrative portrayed in the game has sparked numerous discussions about its potential to break new ground and become the highly anticipated narrative-focused action RPG that many gamers have eagerly anticipated.
The Trailer‘s Glipse Of A Narrative
Although this trailer dove headfirst into the gameplay and combat, it’s pretty clever that they led with a cinematic about a year ago, revealing a lot of information that continues into the latest trailer.
In contrast to numerous contemporary RPGs that are set in science fiction environments, the storyline portrayed in the trailers of Exodus seems particularly inspiring. Surprisingly, even though these stories unfold within vast, intricate sci-fi realms, they manage to maintain a deep focus on personal and emotional human experiences.
In the initial trailer, we’re introduced to the protagonist as someone who has traveled through time because of difficulties encountered during rapid space voyages. On the other hand, the new trailer expands the narrative scope, focusing more on secondary characters and their interrelationships across the whole journey.
Similar to the intricate relationships depicted in “Mass Effect”, these connections are likely to play a pivotal role in the game’s development. While not many details have been revealed as of yet, the characters and interactions we’ve glimpsed thus far hint at a narrative that appears to be on track for a promising start.
As a diehard fan, I can hardly contain my excitement about Exodus, even though it’s still under development. Here’s hoping it doesn’t end up like The Callisto Protocol and delivers a knockout punch as a worthy successor to its groundbreaking predecessor.
