As a huge fan of both tabletop games and animation, I’m thrilled to see the unique fusion of these two worlds in “Exploding Kittens.” The show’s arrival on Netflix is a promising sign that more tabletop game adaptations will follow suit. Although it is only loosely based on the original card game, its whimsical take on God’s journey to reconnect with Earth and its inhabitants is both entertaining and intriguing.

Godcat’s initial reluctance to help the human family is evident, but as he crosses paths with Abbie Higgins, a former Navy SEAL now working in animal control, his apathy doesn’t seem to faze her.

Throughout the series, Godcat experiences an unexpected shift in his perspective. Gradually, he sets aside his self-centered behavior and forms bonds with his human relatives. This suggests that Earth may hold more than just a ticket for him to heaven. Ellis shared that the deep and commanding tone of his voice was influenced by the distinguished British actor Charles Dance.

Surprisingly, this whimsical tale contains thought-provoking moments, subverted expectations, and moral messages. For example, Sasheer Zamana pointed out that the villainous Devilcat faces challenges in fully embodying his wicked role.

This character aspires to embody wickedness, yet consistently falls short. Her portrayal of chaos is likened to destructive actions such as tearing apart a cherished toy or causing an accidental spill. She revels in these moments with a mischievous giggle, exclaiming “Got you!” However, it’s evident that she faces challenges in fully embracing her darker side. The allure of watching this character’s transformation unfold on the show lies in the intrigue of whether or not she will ultimately succumb to evil, despite the audience’s conflicting desires for her victory and moral integrity.

As a huge fan of “Exploding Kittens,” I can’t deny that the show sticks well to the formula of raunchy adult cartoons. However, I’ve noticed that it has a hard time maintaining focus between the human family members’ stories and Godcat’s own struggles. If the creators could narrow down their attention to just one aspect in a potential second season, it would significantly improve the viewing experience for me as a viewer.
