This series combines pulse-pounding action sequences, character development through training phases, insightful conversations between characters, and intricate world development.

One strength of the show is its character development. The inhabitants of the Naruto universe seem authentic due to their flaws and inconsistencies. In fact, several characters act contrary to their teachings, a trait that mirrors human behavior in reality.

8. Momichi Zabuza

A Sweetheart In Disguise

In the anime “Naruto,” Momichi Zabuza is one of the initial villains presented, and he initially exuded an air of mystery and fear. He belonged to the legendary swordsmen of Bloody Mist, a group responsible for slaughtering his entire graduating class. He was also a rogue ninja who disappeared, willing to do whatever it took to earn money, and a ruthless, deadly assassin in the ninja world.

In contrast to his ruthless nature, there was a being who accompanied and catered to Zabuza’s needs – this entity was none other than Haku. While it appeared that Zabuza held no affection for Haku, the truth revealed a deep bond between them. This relationship extended beyond mere student and mentor; Haku was also a cherished friend and confidant. This bond became evident during their storyline, as Zabuza, despite being near death, fought ferociously against a horde of petty thugs who had disrespected Haku.

7. Hatake Kakashi

The Negligent Teacher

In the course of my observation, I’ve found that Hatake Kakashi’s life narrative is deeply intertwined with sorrow and hardship. As a soft-spoken and somewhat introverted young boy, his world was shattered by the untimely demise of his father. With encouragement from Minato and his comrades, Kakashi began to emerge from his grief. However, fate dealt another devastating blow as Obito followed Rin, both members of his team, into the realm of the deceased. To add to this, even his mentor was claimed by death.

Through the influence of his teammates, he shifts his perspective, placing greater emphasis on friendship and camaraderie rather than cold, calculated decisions. Yet, his execution leaves much to be desired; instead of addressing the problematic dynamics within the group of children he oversees, he essentially disregards their issues and sends them off on missions without providing any additional guidance.

6. Uchiha Obito

King of Misunderstandings

I find myself observing the intriguing character of Uchiha Obito, the penultimate villain in this captivating series. He was once a trusted comrade of Kakashi, but after falling victim to Madara’s manipulations, he transformed into a formidable adversary. This transformation enabled him to aid Madara in executing his grand scheme for global domination.

This character’s contradictory behavior can be traced back to his strong advocacy for kindness, friendship, and aid towards others. However, after witnessing a devastating accident, he wrongfully accused his teammate and embarked on a violent spree, attacking his own village and murdering his teacher. Despite the influence of Madara and the emotionally volatile nature of the Sharingan, his actions remain hypocritical.

5. Nagato/Pein

The Misguided Revolutionary

In a notorious criminal group known as Akatsuki, Nagato holds the position of leader. This organization wielded such immense power that it could influence the direction of entire nations. The Akatsuki recruited some of the most formidable shinobi labeled as missing-nins, and had enough force to deploy duos targeting Jinchuuriki individuals for capture. In the beginning, Nagato aimed for global tranquility; however, his approach evolved following the death of a cherished friend.

Instead of continuing his friend’s benevolent path, he opted to transform his demeanor drastically and conceive an ominous scheme. This scheme aimed at compulsory collection of all the beasts with tails, utilizing their combined might to create a super-powerful weapon – a cataclysmic bomb. Theoretically, this bomb would bring about permanent peace. However, it was a flawed concept if he’d given it some thought in the moment, although the execution showed promise until everything unraveled.

4. Jiraiya

The Missing Godfather

As a devoted fan, let me share a bit about one of my favorite characters – Jiraiya. He held a special bond with Naruto’s father, Minato, serving as both their teacher and closest friend. A ninja extraordinaire, he possessed unmatched skills, making him a masterful spymaster. His ability to blend into various social settings for extended periods and gather intel from clandestine bases like Amegakure was nothing short of legendary.

Instead of going back to assist Naruto for more than ten years, he opted not to and avoided fulfilling his responsibilities as his godfather by staying far from the village. Given his political and personal influence, he could have offered a superior life for his godchild, but instead he decided to leave him behind and allow his student’s legacy to mature on its own.

3. Hiruzen Sarutobi

The Incompetent Leader

Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, had the opportunity to provide Naruto with an exceptional life free from concerns or complications. He was the one who concealed that the Kyuubi was sealed within Naruto, prevented Naruto from learning he was a Jinchuuriki, and never disclosed that Naruto was the Fourth Hokage’s own son. These secrets caused significant hardship for Naruto later on.

Following his final conversation with his soon-to-be successor where he promised to look after Naruto, Hiruzen instead set out to create the most challenging upbringing for the young Jinchuuriki. His assistance was sparse, leaving Naruto to navigate his life with minimal support. This lack of aid resulted in widespread mistreatment by society, turning Naruto’s childhood into a solitary nightmare filled with hardship.

2. Shimura Danzo

A Dictator Among Dictators

Danzo Shimura is a character who firmly believes he’s always right, regardless of the circumstances. He embodies the saying, “The path to ruin is often paved with good intentions.” Initially, Danzo admired the Second Hokage and aspired to be like him as a shinobi. However, his journey ended with him possessing numerous Uchiha eyes, which he believed were crucial for assisting the village in some way, even though it was questionable how he came into possession of them.

Danzo believes he’s a self-proclaimed martyr, taking on tasks others find distasteful. His actions are frequently malicious with minimal positive outcomes to show. The ROOT program, for instance, wasn’t particularly successful considering Sai’s limited power. The Uchiha Massacre seemed more like a squandering of resources, as the unique arm he gained was used only once and didn’t even ensure victory in the fight it was employed in. His meddling in foreign affairs led to the creation of a terrorist group that posed a significant global threat at one point, and ultimately resulted in the destruction of his entire village.

1. Uzumaki Naruto

The Hypocrisy of a Protagonist

In a captivating shonen series, the central character should embody ideals, determination, and an uncorrupted spirit – traits that, remarkably, Naruto Uzumaki embodies, but not quite in the way it might seem. I’m talking about a boy who endured a challenging upbringing, yet refused to let his circumstances define him. He transcended the boundaries of his station and ignited the world with his grit, diligence, and indomitable spirit, but the truth is far from that pristine image.

In a talk to Neji, he emphasized that destiny doesn’t restrict anyone, but in the series Boruto, he disqualified his son for utilizing tools not available to others during the Chunin exams. Yet, these actions were highly hypocritical. It should be noted that he was himself a product of prophecy, predestined for greatness as the reincarnation of Asura. Moreover, he enjoyed advantages due to his family ties, such as Kakashi, Jiraiya, and Hiruzen’s mentorship, which could be considered nepotism. Furthermore, and perhaps most significantly, he had a built-in cheat code in the form of a chakra god that he frequently utilized throughout his career.
