‘Extremely Challenging To Hit 60 FPS’: Digital Foundry Talks GTA 6 on PS5 Pro

As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I have seen the evolution of gaming consoles from the humble beginnings of 8-bit systems to the powerful machines we have today. The announcement of the PlayStation 5 Pro has left me both intrigued and skeptical, given its hefty price tag and the lack of compelling titles on the horizon.

Sony has formally revealed the PlayStation 5 Pro, a potent gaming system carrying a premium price. Its steep cost is already deterring some gamers, yet it’s been speculated that this pricing strategy targets hardcore gamers rather than casual ones.

Discussion about potential games for release has dwindled, leading many to speculate that Grand Theft Auto 6 could be the standout game compelling gamers to buy a PlayStation 5 Pro. Yet, in an interview with Digital Foundry, it was hinted that even the enhanced power of the Pro might not be sufficient to boost GTA 6’s frame rate to a smooth 60 frames per second.

‘It’s a CPU Problem’

Approaching a year now since the debut of the Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer, fans are eagerly anticipating fresh news. When the trailer dropped in December 2023, it shattered viewership records, but since then, Rockstar Games has retreated into development mode, working diligently to produce what could be the quickest-selling game of all time.

After the unveiling of the PlayStation 5 Pro, I eagerly joined the conversation between IGN and Digital Foundry’s tech gurus, discussing what we might anticipate when Grand Theft Auto 5 runs on this new console.

To that end, Richard Leadbetter, the technology editor at DF, explained:

Grand Theft Auto games have a history of running intricate simulations that strain the CPU, which is why each GTA game debuts on its intended platforms at 30 frames per second (FPS) or less. Given that the PlayStation 5 Pro uses the same CPU as the PS5, it would be exceptionally difficult to achieve 60 FPS if the base PS5 version is aiming for 30 FPS.

This isn’t a GPU problem, it’s a CPU problem.

Absolutely, if Rockstar aims for a 60 FPS performance on the regular PlayStation 5, it’s possible that other expectations could change – however, there’s been no indication yet to support this assumption.

Rockstar Games consistently strives to create vibrant, alive environments in the Grand Theft Auto series, and it appears that the development of GTA 6 is pushing this concept to extraordinary levels. Players can anticipate incredibly lifelike AI behaviors, resulting in unexpected interactions and distinctive occurrences happening at every corner.

It’s expected that the enhanced power of the PlayStation 5 Pro will significantly improve game visuals and performance, and its 8K capabilities may attract advanced developers. However, it remains uncertain how this upgrade will affect the playing experience of Grand Theft Auto 5.

Is it a deal breaker for you if GTA 6 doesn’t run at 60 FPS on the PS5 Pro?
