Fan Video Shows Concept for a Metroid Game on the Nintendo 64

As a long-time Metroid enthusiast who vividly remembers the N64 era and the void where my beloved Samus should have been, I was absolutely thrilled to stumble upon the Another Metroid 64 concept. It’s like Nintendo forgot that we needed our dose of interstellar exploration and bounty hunting in the third dimension!

A band of Metroid enthusiasts have proposed an idea for a game on the Nintendo 64, emphasizing the series’ untapped potential that the 64-bit console could have realized. Despite the presence of Metroid games on nearly every other Nintendo console, the N64 unfortunately overlooked this franchise.

Upon its launch, the N64 marked Nintendo’s debut into the realm of major 3D graphics consoles, ushering in a new era of gaming. To this day, the N64 is revered as a classic retro console, thanks to its ability to bring numerous well-loved Nintendo franchises into the third dimension. However, despite its strong sales during its generation, iconic series like Metroid and Fire Emblem were overlooked throughout the console’s lifespan. Interestingly, for many N64 players, their first encounter with Metroid was through Samus in the initial Super Smash Bros. In response to this gap, a dedicated group of fans took it upon themselves to create their own version of an N64 Metroid game.

YouTuber InDenial Game Studio recently shared a gameplay trailer for their Metroid N64 concept, Another Metroid 64. The clip begins with a familiar Metroid sight, red lights flashing accompanied by a foreboding alarm and alien symbols. Samus then appears from within a ball of light, showing a more polygonal frame than her appearance in Super Smash Bros. The scene then cuts to a Metroid contained in a laboratory tube before showing Samus spinning into Morph Ball form in the hands of a Chozo statue. The game also seems to include some platforming sections which are shown off with two landscape shots. The video then concludes by showing a sphere of 2D art that may indicate the story behind why Samus is on this planet.

This Is What Metroid 64 Could’ve Looked Like

The new trailer for Metroid 64 showcases some of Samus’ skills, such as the Charge Beam, Bombs, and a helper Metroid. These skills can be accessed by pressing different C-buttons, with the helper Metroid assigned to the down button. The footage also reveals a first-person perspective mode that enables Samus to take precise shots at enemies and solve puzzles. Since this game is still being developed, some aspects shown in the trailer might change before it’s completed. As a 3D game, Metroid 64 resembles the Metroid Prime series, which was revitalized on the Nintendo Switch with a remaster of the first installment. This trailer provides an idea of what a Metroid 64 game could have been if Nintendo had developed one.

Although Metroid didn’t make it onto the N64 market, Super Metroid has gained such a devoted following that it inspired an entire subgenre, known as “Metroidvania,” which includes games like Castelvania. However, due to Nintendo’s reputation for legal action against fan projects, InDenial Game Studio might face challenges in completing their project.
