Fantastic Four: First Steps Looks To Beat Superman’s Box Office

Summary

  • The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Superman are headed for a tight opening weekend race.
  • The new Fantastic Four film is set to surpass Marvel’s past box office performances this year.
  • Past iterations of The Fantastic Four franchise have seen varying levels of success at the box office.

Despite both movies, like “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” and “Superman“, having potential to thrive at the box office, it won’t prevent Marvel and DC enthusiasts from engaging in heated debates online. Predictably, the primary topic of discussion will revolve around which film will open with a larger weekend gross.

In the past few years, both Marvel and DC have faced challenges in appealing to their audiences. However, the upcoming releases of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” for Marvel Studios and “Superman” by DC are seen as a comeback for these comic book giants. Notably, “Superman” marks the commencement of a new multimedia franchise called the DC Universe from Warner Bros., while “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is the opening act in Marvel Studios’ Phase Six lineup of movies and TV shows. Although technically speaking, the DC Universe started with last year’s “Creature Commandos,” and the MCU has already produced two films this year—”Captain America: Brave New World” and “Thunderbolts”—that received mixed reactions at the box office, both “Superman” and “First Steps” have been positively received by critics. Preliminary box office data suggests that the new “Fantastic Four” film is doing well, much like “Superman” has thus far.

In the current race, The Fantastic Four: First Steps appears to have a slight edge, but it’s still anyone’s game. According to Variety, First Steps has accumulated approximately $57 million from preview screenings and its first day showings, which is nearly matching Minecraft Movie’s biggest opening day this year and slightly surpassing Superman’s. However, if First Steps wants to outperform Superman’s three-day opening weekend gross of around $125 million, it needs to keep attracting audiences throughout the weekend. At present, which film will have a stronger opening weekend is essentially a toss-up.

It Is A Tight Race Between Superman And The Fantastic Four: First Steps For Opening Weekend Dominance

A Minecraft Movie Is The True Winner Either Way

Regardless of how you look at it, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is predicted to surpass all other Marvel Studios films this year in terms of opening weekend earnings. While “Captain America: Brave New World” raked in approximately $88 million during its debut and “Thunderbolts*” performed poorly with around $74 million, both movies turned out to be financial disappointments for Marvel and Disney at the box office. However, they are likely to turn a profit by considering home video sales and merchandising revenue.

The movie titled “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is actually the fourth cinematic appearance of Marvel’s original family. The initial film, released in 2005 as simply “Fantastic Four,” generated a whopping $333 million worldwide, while its sequel from 2007, “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,” raked in an impressive $301 million globally. However, the 2015 reboot, also titled “Fantastic Four,” didn’t fare as well, earning a mere $167 million worldwide, with a disappointing $56 million from North America alone. Interestingly enough, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” managed to outperform the 2015 film in just one day at the U.S. and Canadian box offices. Not too bad for a fresh start!
