Far Cry’s DLC Should Inspire Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

In 2025, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 could potentially be the standout game of the year due to its unique approach to open-world gaming. Unlike many games, it doesn’t require climbing towers, its map isn’t cluttered with markers, travel isn’t instantaneous, and instead of boasting a vast, empty world, its environment is moderately-sized and richly detailed. However, there’s one area where Warhorse’s renowned RPG could benefit from learning from its open-world contemporaries, particularly how Far Cry manages DLC.

Kidnapping Dracula?

At Prague Comic Con, Martin Klíma, producer of KCD2, revealed that 35 storylines were eliminated from the game’s final version to allow Warhorse Studios to release it six months earlier. These discarded quests might be included in future DLC or could remain unreleased. One of the removed missions features Henry taking part in a scheme to kidnap Count Dracula, although Klíma hinted that it might actually be his son who is targeted instead.

In a different scenario, if Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 were to take some creative liberties with history, it wouldn’t be the iconic Dracula, as crafted by Bram Stoker, that we would encounter. Instead, it could be Vlad Dracula, the real-life voivode of Wallachia, who was infamously called Vlad the Impaler. This thought sparked when Klíma mentioned Dracula in a casual manner, leading me to ponder about a universe where Warhorse Studios allowed Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 a bit more flexibility with historical facts.

Far Cry Points The Way

The Far Cry series isn’t as focused on realism as Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. Unlike Warhorse’s open-world game where you need to manage sleep, eat, check food freshness, sharpen your sword, and strategize your attacks carefully, or else the game could end before it even starts, Far Cry allows you to control an alligator in combat. Both games aim to depict a believable world rather than one that’s fantastical or science fiction-based.

As a devoted fan, I must clarify that my statement about the Far Cry series pertains primarily to the mainline games. For instance, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon offered an ’80s-inspired future, while Far Cry: Primal took us back to prehistoric times. Far Cry: New Dawn transported us into a post-apocalyptic world following the nuclear ending of Far Cry 5. To add to this, one of the DLC expansions for game number 5 took us on an interstellar adventure to Mars, and another had us battling hordes of zombies.

Ubisoft maintains a realistic feel in their Far Cry series by saving more imaginative concepts for spin-offs and additional content. This is similar to Rockstar’s approach with Red Dead Redemption’s Undead Nightmare, and Call of Duty’s Zombies mode. A series based on the real world can still venture into fantasy territory, but it’s crucial that these departures are clearly signposted. Offering these detours as downloadable content or standalone expansions provides a clear path for players to choose whether they want to explore these fantastical elements.

Medieval Bohemia in King’s Crown II offers a wealth of captivating fantasy concepts to delve into. The original game hints at this with instances such as Henry discovering tales of a legendary axe hidden near a lake, or when Miller Kreyzl tasks him with crafting a golem. These brief forays into the fantastical are portrayed as imaginative whimsies among the characters. Just like Robert Eggers’ Puritans in The Witch perceive their world solely through the prism of 15th-century religious beliefs and folklore, the cast of KCD2 holds onto certain beliefs that we now recognize as mythical or unreal.

In terms of its allure, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 might slightly diminish what makes it unique if it delves into the supernatural. However, the achievements of The Witcher 3 and A Song of Ice and Fire demonstrate that fantasy can coexist with raw realism quite effectively.

I have an idea for expanding Warhorse’s unique style into a new scenario: imagine if we were to pit our protagonist against werewolves, perhaps with a grand event such as a vampire-themed wedding serving as the backdrop. In this setting, Henry could concoct genuine magical potions using the alchemy bench, and we could even have a holiday DLC centered around a Krampus boss fight. The possibilities are endless when reality’s rules can be bent like a blade in desperate need of sharpening!
