Fatal Fury Game Shadow Dropped on Steam

The classic fighting game *Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers*, first released in 1998, is now unexpectedly available on Steam. This is the second *Fatal Fury* game to come to Steam this year, after *Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves* launched in April.

The *Fatal Fury* series has been around for a long time and includes several games and sub-series, like *Real Bout* and the *Wolves* games. *Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers* is a particularly well-loved classic that originally appeared in arcades. It was one of the last big successes for SNK, the original Japanese developer, before the company went bankrupt in 1999. Since then, the rights to the game have changed hands a few times, most recently when the Misk Foundation, based in Saudi Arabia, acquired a majority stake (96.18%) in 2022.

Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers Makes a Surprise Comeback

Following the release of *Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves* a few months ago, SNK quietly launched an updated version of *Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers* on Steam on September 28th. This 2D fighting game features a roster of 23 characters, including popular favorites like Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui, as well as newcomers Li Xiangfei and Rick Strowd. A key feature is its rollback netcode, which enables smooth online multiplayer matches for up to 9 players, alongside a tournament mode with three different formats. *Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers* is the first game in SNK’s NeoGeo Premium Selection, a series designed to bring back classic arcade titles for modern players.

Beyond the improvements already mentioned, this updated version of *Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers* includes some exciting new features. Players can explore a Gallery Mode with 59 pieces of artwork, including key visuals and character portraits from the *Fatal Fury* series. They can also unlock achievements and use them as their profile picture in online battles. The Practice Mode has been enhanced too, now offering adjustable game speed, a hitbox display, and recording options.

Shortly after the release of *Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves*, SNK’s then-CEO, Kenji Matsubara, resigned. This suggests the game didn’t perform as well as the company hoped. Given the current changes within SNK, it makes sense for them to focus on updating their popular classic games to appeal to both existing fans and new players.
