Features Of The MCDM Illrigger D&D Class

As a seasoned Dungeon Master with decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the Illrigger has become one of my favorite homebrew classes to grace the tabletop. Coming from the talented minds at Matt Colville’s MCDM, it’s no surprise that this class manages to meld risk and reward in a way that feels both innovative and familiar.

For quite some time now, “Dungeons & Dragons” has held a significant position in popular culture. Originating from simplified war game adaptations in the 1950s, it evolved into one of the pioneers of the tabletop roleplaying genre, stimulating and engaging our imagination in a remarkable way. Today, you can find D&D incorporated in Lego sets and mentioned in numerous popular TV shows. What was once considered a niche pastime has now gained mainstream appeal.

Among the many appealing aspects of this game lies its abundant Homebrew content, particularly from the community. Although MCDM’s class slightly straddles the boundary between official and Homebrew, having an endorsement on D&D Beyond, a platform owned by Wizards, it’s crucial to remember that this class is exceptional. MCDM is widely acclaimed for their top-notch contributions to Dungeons & Dragons, and this charismatic take on the Paladin, which serves as a formidable alternative, has enough unique characteristics to establish itself as a valued addition among D&D’s prominent class archetypes.

8. Magic Hybrid

This Class Blends Martial And Magical Elements

In their standard version, the Illrigger doesn’t cast spells conventionally, but instead, they possess captivating occult aspects related to the enchantments they can impose on adversaries. These unique abilities are what make this class intriguing and deliciously sinister from the start.

The player’s resource to keep on top of is not something internal, like a monk’s ki points or a spellcaster’s slots. Instead, seals must be burned for effects, and seals must be placed on enemies. The Illrigger’s foes are the resource that must be managed for effects, which is incredible flavor.

7. Hellish Flavor

The Illrigger Is Infernal By Nature

Although everyone is welcome in this class, those aiming for roles symbolizing light and optimism might want to explore alternative classes prior to choosing this one. Given that the Illrigger serves as a direct minion of hell, being part of an Archdevil’s inner circle.

This serves as a superb foundation for a classroom setting, where participants can expect an enjoyable experience as they create narratives explaining their characters’ journey into serving some of the most powerful malevolent forces across multiple universes.

6. Debuff Oriented

Illriggers Can Wreak Havoc On Foes

The Illrigger character class stands out for its definition largely depends on the chosen subclass. Regardless, each subclass shares a common focus: disrupting an opponent’s forward progression or momentum. They all possess unique traits designed to hinder enemies in some way.

Seals naturally possess a unique trait, which is a Level 1 skill for the Illrigger character. This skill allows them to cause destruction among weak opponents with an effortless method of continuous extra damage, gradually draining the life force of their adversaries.

5. High-Damage Features

Many Illrigger Class Features Put It On The Front Lines

As an enthusiast, I can’t help but admire the relentless destructive nature of the Illrigger. Particularly fascinating is the Shadowmaster archetype, which grants immediate upper hands during attacks, pinpoints vulnerabilities in enemies, and serves as an exceptional tool for dealing high-impact damage in a short span.

A Powerful Enhancer could transform a regular attack into a crushing blow, ideal in games that have slightly amplified critical hits through custom rules. It’s also an effective method for significantly increasing the damage inflicted at any given moment.

4. Paladin Opposed

The Illrigger Is A Dark Reflection Of The Paladin

As an avid fan, I can’t help but marvel at the contrast between a Paladin’s Divine Smite and the Illrigger’s enticing ability, Invoke Hell. It’s almost as if they are two sides of the same coin, each wielding divine power in their unique ways. Just like how a Paladin has multiple options for Divine Smites, the Illrigger too offers two distinct choices per subclass with Invoke Hell.

Invoking Hell powers effectively outlines the Illrigger’s function within the group, as they serve as a disposable asset that regenerates following a rest, much like a Paladin’s mirror-image ability.

3. Diverse Subclasses

Find A Niche With Many Subclasses

One of the things that does signal this subclass being an MCDM production and not something coming out of Wizards proper is the way it handles subclasses. A fighter, no matter their subclass, will be a frontline damage dealer. A cleric will always be a holy spellcaster. A bard will always be the source of the party’s problems.

The Illrigger will consistently maintain Charisma as a key attribute (similar to the Paladin), but it offers versatility in terms of its role, ranging from a sturdy tank, a covert assassin, a magic-wielding spellcaster, or a charming bard-like character. Regardless of the chosen playstyle, this ominous class can adapt and function effectively.

2. Mingles Risk With Reward

Class Abilities Come At Great Risk To The Illrigger

As a gamer, I find that the Illrigger class abilities demand a certain level of personal risk from me, aiming to boost my overall contribution to the party. This trait is reminiscent of Matt Mercer’s Bloodhunter class or his Blood School subclass for wizards – both of which involve taking risks for greater rewards.

As a fervent admirer, I’d like to highlight an intriguing feature that Illriggers possess – they can invest their hit-points to boost a failed roll, mirroring their relentless combat efficiency in the most dramatic fashion. This mechanic also underscores their unwavering commitment to their cause, as they are willing to sacrifice their own health recovery for the sake of victory.

1. Warlock Influenced

Bond With Powerful Entities

As a follower enamored with the mystical arts, I must admit that both the Warlock’s subclasses and the Illrigger share some intriguing perspectives. For instance, they seem to concur that Hell, in its own twisted way, holds an undeniable allure. Moreover, their belief that serving an ancient and malevolent entity for power is a rather common endeavor, is thought-provoking, to say the least.

It seems that Illriggers acquire Interdict Boons, much like a Warlock gains Eldritch Invocations. These bonuses function similarly to abilities that any subclass player can choose to boost their overall performance.
