The Irresponsible Captain Tylor

You might not immediately think of The Irresponsible Captain Tylor when you think of ’90s anime, but it’s a really enjoyable show that’s different from a lot of anime being made now. Big, epic space adventures like this were much more common in the ’80s and ’90s, but they’ve fallen out of favor recently.

Tylor is a slacker who just wants a peaceful, easy life and to avoid any kind of conflict. However, after stumbling into a situation where he unintentionally resolves a hostage crisis, he unexpectedly finds himself in charge of an old spaceship. Now, Tylor, who desperately wanted to avoid trouble, is suddenly responsible for the ship and its crew, putting him right in the middle of it.

Yu Yu Hakusho

While it may not be as well-known as classics like Dragon Ball and One Piece, Yu Yu Hakusho is still considered one of the best action series from the 1990s.

After a 14-year-old troublemaker named Yuusuke Urameshi bravely saves a child’s life, he’s given a chance to earn his way back from the afterlife. He’s tasked with protecting the human world from supernatural dangers as a Spirit Detective. This is the story of Yu Yu Hakusho.

This show looks fantastic and has a really compelling story, putting it among the top shonen anime. If you haven’t seen it recently, or at all, it’s definitely worth checking out.

Key the Metal Idol

You may have seen this show popping up on social media lately. While Key the Metal Idol isn’t super famous, it’s a real standout from its time and well worth checking out.

The story centers on Tomiko Mima, a seemingly normal 17-year-old who is secretly a robot. After her grandfather dies, she learns she can become human by making 30,000 friends. Determined to achieve this, Tomiko moves to Tokyo to pursue her dream of becoming an Idol. However, a former enemy of her grandfather appears to have sinister intentions involving Tomiko and her unique nature.

Great Teacher Onizuka

Following his earlier series Shonan Junai Gumi and Bad Company, Great Teacher Onizuka tells the story of Eikichi Onizuka, a former troublemaker who accidentally becomes a teacher while trying to find a girlfriend.

Eikichi Onizuka, a former gang leader turned teacher, is assigned to a class of seriously troubled students. While other teachers have failed to reach them, Onizuka is surprisingly well-equipped to handle the challenge. GTO is a compelling series that doesn’t shy away from difficult topics, but Onizuka consistently finds a way to make things better.

Cardcaptor Sakura

Magical Girl anime aren’t as widely watched now as they once were. While Sailor Moon is the most famous example of the genre, there are many other excellent shows to choose from. One of the best from the 1990s is Cardcaptor Sakura.

Cardcaptor Sakura centers around Sakura Kinomoto, who accidentally unleashes a set of magical cards called the Clow Cards and must then recapture them all. Though it didn’t reach the same level of popularity as Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura remains a classic and is highly recommended for anyone who enjoys or is curious about the magical girl genre.

Trigun

Even with its recent updated look, the original Trigun remains the best version. It’s essential viewing for anime fans and a fantastic example of classic ’90s animation.

Trigun centers around Vash the Stampede, a man with an enormous bounty on his head and a reputation for being a destructive force. However, Vash isn’t actually violent – he’s a pacifist. He journeys across the desert planet Gunsmoke with two insurance agents, Milly Thompson and Meryl Stryfe, who try to limit the destruction he’s rumored to cause. Their travels become much more dangerous when a team of highly skilled assassins begins to pursue them.

Record of Lodoss War

Before shows about characters being transported to other worlds became popular in anime, traditional fantasy series like Record of Lodoss War were more common. The story centers on Parn and his companions as they journey across the island of Lodoss, investigating mysterious events. They soon find themselves caught up in a war that will decide the fate of the entire island.

Even after all these years, Record of Lodoss War remains visually appealing. It’s a distinctly ’90s anime, and if you enjoy classic fantasy stories with that retro aesthetic, it’s definitely worth checking out.
