During Chapter 8 of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Cloud and Aerith visit an orphanage in the Sector 5 Slums. When you talk to Ms. Folia, who’s standing outside Leaf House, she explains that five children are missing after going out to run errands, and it’s almost time for their class to begin.

Now, the side quest ‘Kids on Patrol‘ begins. You’ll have five clues to help you find the missing children and rescue them from the ‘Toad King’ and his followers. As a reward for saving them, you’ll complete the quest. Here’s a guide to finding the children and defeating the Toad King (also known as the Hedgehog Pie King) and his minions.

How to Find the Kids on Patrol in Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Ms. Folia tells you that the five children you need to find are easily recognizable – they each have a sword made by hand attached to their back. She also provides five clues to help you locate each child during this side quest in Chapter 8.

  • One boy patrols near some concrete pipes.
  • One girl likes to do her patrols in public areas with lots of people.
  • One boy spends most of his time checking out the shops.
  • One girl loves to be fussed over by folks at the community center.
  • One boy likes to stand guard at the town gate.

The simplest way to locate all the children is to follow a circular route, starting at the orphanage. Facing Leaf House, turn around and enter the alleyway to your left. Then, turn left again and continue until you spot the first child in the middle of the street. Turn back around and walk down the alleyway until you reach the group gathered around the TV – you’ll remember seeing them when you first entered the slums. The next child will be standing towards the back of that group.

Walk forward, angling slightly to your right, to find the next child at the top of a small hill. Walk back down the hill and immediately turn left. Then, take the next left alleyway, followed by a right turn, and another left. You’ll find the next child inside a pipe. Follow the path through the pipe to return to Leaf House, and you’ll pass the last child along the way.

Once you locate each child, simply tell them their teacher is looking for them. After that, they’ll go outside the orphanage.

How to Beat the Hedgehog Pie King in FF7 Remake

Just when you think you’re done, the children reveal there’s another problem! After bringing them back to the orphanage, they explain that a ‘Toad King’ has taken over their play area, and they need your help to get it back.

Look for the green marker on your map – that’s where you need to go to begin. Along the way, you’ll see a few small spots with Hedgehog Pies. When you reach the arena, you’ll find the Hedgehog Pie King, guarded by two helpers.

Hedgehog Pie and Pie Kings are vulnerable to ice and will try to burn you, but they can also heal their teammates. To beat them, use ice attacks. Protect yourself from fire by equipping Elemental and Fire Materia, and focus on taking out enemies before they can be healed.

Once your foes are down, you’ll be prompted to fast travel back to Leaf House.

What’s the Reward for Completing the Kids on Patrol Side Quest in FF7 Remake?

Completing this mission on Normal or Easy difficulty unlocks the side quest ‘A Verified Hero’ and a Nail Bat. The Nail Bat works like a sword for Cloud and gives him the Disorder ability, allowing him to quickly leap towards an enemy and land an initial attack.

While the Nail Bat isn’t the most powerful weapon overall, it significantly boosts Cloud’s chance of landing critical hits and the amount of damage they deal. It’s a great choice if you’re building Cloud to focus on physical attacks, as it doesn’t have any slots for equipping Materia.
