Summary
- Final Fantasy 7 moment turned into Magic: The Gathering card, “Aerith Rescue Mission”
- Two options on the card reflect key scenes in FF7’s Shinra HQ section
- Card could have been better as an Instant card to prevent enemy attacks and tap effects
One frustrating aspect from Final Fantasy 7 has been transformed into a similarly frustrating Magic: The Gathering card for the upcoming collaboration pack.
While Final Fantasy 7 is universally acclaimed as a timeless masterpiece, it’s important to note that no game is flawless from start to finish. There are certain challenging instances throughout the game, like trying to catch the chocobo to bypass the Midgar Zolom, collecting all of Cloud’s lady clothing during the Wall Market scene, and enduring the Fort Condor minigame.
One particularly frustrating sequence occurs when characters from Avalanche assault Shinra HQ. If a player decides to bypass the elevator, they must ascend 59 floors via stairs instead. Remarkably, the game refuses to offer any shortcuts; players must endure this grueling climb while Cloud, Barret, and Tifa grumble incessantly throughout.
Magic: The Gathering Players Can Be Forced To Take The Stairs

On the Magic TCG subreddit, a fresh reveal unveiled a new card titled Aerith Rescue Mission. This four-mana card (requiring two white and any two colors) is a Sorcery with two distinct effects, each inspired by the Shinra HQ area from Final Fantasy 7.
Option 1 is referred to as “Riding the Elevator,” which generates three 1/1 Avalanche Member Tokens. These tokens symbolize the team members reaching the upper floor. Since they are Hero tokens, they can engage with the recently introduced Job Selection mechanic, allowing them to be equipped with items that grant them unique abilities.
Option 2 is referred to as “Climb 59 Staircases“, an action that targets three specific creatures, placing a “Stun” marker on each. This marker prevents them from untapping for a turn, causing quite the inconvenience. Given its annoying impact, it’s fitting that such an effect is associated with such a seemingly foolish moment.
Aerith’s Rescue Mission is a powerful card. Enhancing it to be an Instant ability would enable the player to block three adversaries from attacking or employing their tap abilities for a single turn, but even in its current form, it remains advantageous for players eager to safeguard their beloved florist character.
