The film titled “Final Destination” is a highly-acclaimed supernatural thriller known for its imaginative, suspenseful, and sometimes gory portrayals of death. Released in 2000, the initial installment of the series was helmed by James Wong. A follow-up, “Final Destination 2“, hit theaters in 2003. Fans’ enthusiasm for it led to the creation of four additional films: “Final Destination 3 ” (2006), “The Final Destination” (2009), and “Final Destination 5” (2011). The sixth film in the franchise, “Final Destination Bloodlines“, is set to debut soon, with its directors sharing insights from their collaboration with a horror genre icon.
Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky engaged in a pre-premiere interview with GamesRadar for their upcoming horror film, “Final Destination Bloodlines”. The series has always been marked by numerous deaths, and this trend will continue in the new movie. Regrettably, one of its original actors from the first “Final Destination” film passed away last year. In the interview, they discussed working with Tony Todd, a veteran actor who played the enigmatic mortician William Bludworth in three of the initial five movies – “Final Destination”, “Final Destination 2”, and “Final Destination 5”. He reprises his role in “Bloodlines”. Stein expressed gratitude for collaborating with Todd, whom he referred to as a “legend”. Apart from his work on “Final Destination”, Todd is renowned for his portrayal of Candyman – a haunting character with a tragic past. He played Candyman in three films – “Candyman” (1992), “Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh” (1995), and “Candyman: Day of the Dead” (1999). Todd has also starred in numerous horror movies, including “Wishmaster” (1997), “Hatchet II” (2010), “Sushi Girl” (2012), “Hell Fest” (2018), and “Leprechaun Returns” (2018). They were initially uncertain about Todd’s participation due to his health concerns, but when informed, he allegedly told them, “I must be in this movie“. Stein explained that they worked closely with Todd and even planned how his character would bid farewell to the audience as they assumed it would be his last “Final Destination” film since each film takes several years to produce. Stein added:
Initially, we thought this might be the final “Final Destination” film for him. Later on, we didn’t expect that it would actually be his last movie altogether.
The director made clear that they intended for Todd to bid goodbye to the viewers in the film. They suggested a scene featuring Bludworth delivering a message to his followers, urging Todd to express himself freely. Stein mentioned that in the movie, fans would witness Todd speaking sincerely to the audience, and it was anticipated to be an emotional sequence. He acknowledged that Todd’s powerful message, which focused on life, its value, and the importance of cherishing each moment, had also moved them. Sadly, Todd passed away in November 2024 from stomach cancer. The character of Bludworth within the franchise has stirred speculation due to the mysterious information he shares. For example, he often discusses death and the idea that it cannot be avoided. Some fans even think he might not be human, while others propose he could be the embodiment of Death itself.
Viewers can anticipate uncovering details about Bludworth’s past in the movie “Final Destination: Bloodlines“. This character is particularly captivating within the series because of his understanding of death. He makes significant appearances, explaining the essence of death to teenagers who have narrowly escaped death but are meeting their end one by one after a life-threatening incident. He conveys that they cannot outsmart death and there’s no means of escaping it, all while maintaining an unemotional and tranquil demeanor around the subject. His chilling and eloquent discussions on death hint at a stronger bond with the supernatural, and fans won’t have to wonder for long as they will soon discover more about it.
Final Destination Bloodlines hit theaters on May 16.
